“Outstanding place to stay”
Reviewed August 1, 2007

Myself and partner stayed on Bekana island for 5 nights. I could have stayed a year. The staff at the resort are wonderful and only too happy to make your stay a plessant one. We stayed in a original Fijian Bure the first night and then in a Deluxe the other nights. The Original bure are basic so i'd probably recommend to book the deluxe Bure. If you take the Orignial Fijian Bure just remember like everything in life you get what you pay for.

Bekana is only a short trip to the mainlain by boat. The staff are only too happy to take you to the mainland for a charge of $2F one way. If you are wanting to stay somewhere that you can check out Nadi and Lautoka or other attractions whithin the area this place is ideal.

Some of the bures unfortunatelly look into the mainland ports wharfe and sugar mill although its only a little scar on the outlook.

The Night life at Bekana can be good some of the nights. We enjoyed 2 nights of Fijian dacing, fire throwing and a live band.

I will be going back to Bekana again. Its a great place to stay before heading out the outer Islands.

If you are looking for a totally relaxing, authentic Fijian holiday you cannot go past Bekana! This resort is a hidden treasure that my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed.

We stayed 3 nights at Bekana and then went to another Island but after 2 nights we left and went back to Bekana for a further 3 nights. We missed the relaxed, intimate atmosphere of Bekana.

To say the staff at Bekana are friendly is an understatement! We had a truly authentic Fijian holiday not a commercialised experience that some of the more advertised resorts offer.

The great thing about Bekana is that you have the option of lying on the beach reading a book if you want to and then after a 5 minute boat ride you can be in Lautoka shopping and exploring the city or local towns. Bekana Island is only 3 kilometres off Lautoka with views across the water to the city so you have the best of both worlds in a resort!

The open-air restaurant is on the beachfront with stunning views across the water to Lautoka's coastline. The food is delicious and the evening entertainment is laid back and intimate. The local people who performed for us in the evening seemed like friends we had known all our lives by the time we left.

The accommodation was superb. We could lie in bed in the morning with the front door open and see and hear the gentle waves lapping on the sandy beach a few meters away. Large rooms with air conditioning and fans. Large comfortable beds, television, telephone, tea and coffee setup, large walk-in shower and a spacious bathroom.

The island has lovely, lush, foliage with coconuts, paw-paws, frangipani's and banana palms growing everywhere and is very natural. The good thing is only the resort is on the island so you have the whole island to explore!

We would recommend Bekana to anyone. The people could not do enough for us and were so friendly and accommodating, nothing was a problem to them.

We will be going back to Bekana, this time for a longer stay and we are both counting the days until we return...

We decided to stay at Bekana due to its close proximity to Nadi Airport - about 40 minutes car ride away. We only had a few days and needed a place that wouldn't take half a day to transfer to.

We stayed in a traditional Bure which was a great experience and my partner and I really enjoyed the privacy of the Bure.
The Bure came complete with a modern toilet and shower and even included a mini fridge - good for those drinks you need after a hot day at the beach.

The activities offered by the hotel were great and gave you an insight into some traditional Fijian practices. The staff were friendly and helpful.
The food menu offers options for travellers on all budgets and the bar wasn't too badly priced.

Overall this resort was pretty much how we thought it would be - reasonably priced (for Fiji) with an average beach and pretty good facilities.

  • Liked — The staff, the free activities
  • Disliked — The many bugs that hang around the restaurant

If you can ignore the view of Lautoka's container port, or just look the other way, the Bekana Garden Island Resort isn't a bad place to spend a few days if you don't want to venture far from the airport. We stayed there for three days after returning from a trip to the outer islands.

There are 25 modern bures, with aircon, TVs, phones, etc. fronting onto a narrow but reasonably attractive beach. Prices are in the range $125 - $150 per room per night, and at slack times you should be able to negotiate a deal such as a discount on multiple nights, or including meals in the price. We thought it was good value considering the high standard of our bure.

The resort has kayaks and snorkelling equipment which are free for guests to use, and runs a few activities such as fish feeding, trips to other islands and volleyball matches. Otherwise, it's just a place to relax. A free boat to Lautoka runs every two hours throughout the day. It's about 10 minutes to the wharf, then about 15-20 minutes' walk or a short taxi ride into town.

The food is generally very good, and there is a cocktail bar for those who are so inclined. We noticed that quite a few people who weren't staying at the resort turned up for lunch or dinner.

One word of warning - take plenty of insect repellent!

  • Liked — High quality of rooms
  • Disliked — View of port; bloodthirsty insects

We stayed 10 nights at Bekana, what a wonderful experience, we have had 3 trips to fiji, and have stayed in the larger resorts previously, this smaller resort was perfect, the staff are amazing, so friendly and helpful, the beachfront rooms are spacious and very nice. The food was wonderful. The nights were great, music from Steve and the guys was very entertaining. If you want to experience the real fijian people, this is the place to come, you get to spend a lot of time talking to the staff, so you get to learn alot about their culture and their lives. In the 10 nights we were there, we were treated like family, and it was sad to leave. We will defininatly be going back to Bekana to see these wonderful people again. The staff need to be applauded for the wonderful job that they do, especially Steve. A perfect relaxing holiday, can't wait to go back.

  • Liked — rooms were spacious and very nice, right on the beach or set in beutiful gardens
  • Disliked — have got no complaints
  • Tips/Secrets — a small resort , but a wonderful experience with great staff

BULA! (Hello) So many resorts in Fiji and you dont know where to go. We visited the island in August. I did read reviews on Trip Advisor before leaving but our preferential place was fully booked so Bekana was second choice. We were not disappointed. As another advisor said "the working people on this island make this place". When I first saw the island was only 10 mins from Lautoka I was thinking not good but actually being able to boat back to Lautoka any day and go shopping was great. Another plus about this island is that an American chap with his lovely yacht Tavake will take you and 7 others to neighbouring islands such as Treasure and Beachcomber. Lunch at Beachcomber (excellent) included in the $90 each fare. This is a must do. Hospitality on Bekana is awesome. The Manageress was a bit stroppy - second in charge a joy. Lots going on and the band is tops. Get ready to enjoy 'kava time'. Only downfall on this island is rubbish which seems to come from across the mainland - my hubby went kayaking, found a New Zealand onion sack and collected a bag full of rubbish. Not exactly what tourists want to see. Apart from that good food and good company. The sea at your doorstep thats very reasonably priced. Other must do: Orchid Gardens, Daikoku Rest-Nandi and Bulaccino cafe-Nandi. VINAKA (thank you)

We loved it, spent a week here, and would definitely go back in fact we are planning to return with the whole family next time. We are a little reluctant to write a review because the joy of Bekana is that it is not big, not busy, everyone knows your name - it’s just like being at home! Completely relaxed, super friendly and the contrast between the island and Lautoka although only ten minutes away was a different world. It is the staff that make the place, it is not five star but if you are happy to leave the prada and home and wear your pj’s to breakfast you will love. There is not much for older children to do other than kayak or snorkel, and there isn’t a kids club but the island is safe enough to let the roam a little and babysitting is cheap although we didn’t use it. Drinks are very expensive $10-18 for a cocktail and only 20% off in happy hour 6-7pm, but they are happy for you to bring duty free and get ice form the bar and sit in your bure or on the beach. We will be back next year; hopefully it won’t be too busy!!!

  • Liked — Staff were amazing, and the aircon helped!
  • Disliked — Bar was expensive, glad there weren't too many guests
  • Tips/Secrets — take your duty free, bug-spray & SPF and relax
