“I don't know what all the fuss is about? Overpriced and sleepless nights”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2011

We stayed here for two nights at the beginning and end of our Fiji holiday. Our first night we arrived late and had a pickup from the airport arranged by the hotel which was great. On arrival at the Orchid, we were greeted with umbrellas and cool drinks, and checked in quickly. We then grabbed our umbrellas and made the trek to our bure. Don't get me wrong, the bure is fine, but so hugely overpriced I really don't understand it. There is nothing inside to warrant the cost - no coffee/tea making facilities, no TV, our second room didn't even have a radio. The toiletries are limited to some hotel wrapped soaps. The hand pump soap in the shower smelt terrible and had to be washed off with the cheap hotel soap.

We did venture to the restaurant on the first night, for dinner it was $156FJD for two people, no drinks. Extortionate prices for Fiji, and for the quality and quantity of food received. The entree was practically non existent, and the prawns we ate for main were of poor quality and falling apart on the plate. Dessert of cake was nice. The main thing that put us off dinner was in the background what appeared to be hotel management/staff watching American Idol and Rugby on the TV just behind us. So instead of getting the beautiful serene peace we had hoped for, we had this to contend with. After dinner we made the trek (I say trek as it is a walk through lots of trees with many toads along the way!) back to our room. As we turned all the lights off, the rain started. Normally not an issue right? Well, when you have a canvas roof it is a massive issue. Even when the rain stopped, the dripping continued all night. We had to leave early in the morning and were just exhausted.

We had prepaid for another night at the end of our trip and I really wasn't looking forward to it at all. Again our pickup at the airport was smooth, check in was great. This time a lady named Mele greeted us and was super friendly so my hopes were lifted. We decided to avoid dinner and eat some chips in our room. This time our bure was on the other side of the path, and the noise all night was insane. There were cars constantly going past - we're still not sure where though as we could only hear them, not see them - it rained heavily for hours on our canvas roof, and our friendly bure neighbours decided to play blaring music till 2am. Unfortunately you can't do anything about this as it doesn't appear there is a phone in your room to call anyone. Unless of course I missed that, although I'm not sure where they could put it as the room is fairly tiny. So another horrible sleepless night and I can assure them that I won't be going back.

Not only is this place a good half hour drive from the airport I just can't work out why it costs so much to stay here. The rooms are definately not luxury, there are no real amenities provided and the meals are cafe quality at best.

There are many options near the airport that I would choose next time, for a third of the price, when all you want is to sleep...

this place is so peaceful and calming to arrive at ..............using it as my stopover on the way to and back from nukubati island..it is a divine respite after the hustle and bustle of airports .Sleeping in the luxury tents in the midst of a secluded orchid garden i felt so special and surrounded by birdsong drifting in and out of sleep was just fabulous . this time I was lucky to be there long enough to enjoy the beautiful swimming pool which is so privateand not at all like a hotel ......beautiful food in an openair dining room .a beautiful old colonial house.,this was definately the right choice for my stays in Nadi and having the whole Fiji experience from beginning to end.

Straight from a long flight and lost luggage to a zen-like property. We read the reviews, but the experience was so much more rich than we expected. First, the the staff are super; beyond friendly and attentive - truly caring. The manager Gordon literally took the shirt off of his back t help us deal with our lack of luggage.

The property itself is amazing. Rarely do I simply want to stay on the deck and read, but everything is so perfect that this was how I spent my pre-activity mornings. I am an on-the-go person, but the idea of some self-initiated yoga on the patio was just beckoning in such a spiritual setting; when you see it you will understand.

This is generally a stop-over location, although there is plenty to make this a home-base while remaining active throughout the stay. We stayed at the beginning of our trip, and I have honestly never relaxed in such a short time as I did when we arrived at the Orchid. Our days were spend hiking, sailing, or exploring town, and our mornings and evenings were spent enjoying the wonderful food and beautiful resort.

Thank you Orchid for taking such good care of us, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!

After spending a wonderful honeymoon at Nukubati Island (see separate review), we spent a long afternoon at the Fiji Orchid, before boarding our plane home. The Orchid is best described as a "transit hotel". Its proximity to the airport makes it ideal for spending an afternoon or overnight, while awaiting planes or in-country transport.
The hotel is actually Raymond Burr's former house, and has been transformed into a beautiful property.

There are lush gardens, with orchids and other tropical flowers. There is a massage bure, though we did not make use of it. There is also a large swimming pool, with hot tub, and several chairs with umbrellas. The main reception area is very modern appearing, and well maintained. The restaurant is attached to this main area, and the food is excellent. We had spent a week eating oustanding food at Nukubati, and the chef at the orchid is just as impressive. The staff, including Gordon, the manager, are attentive to every detail, and make you feel at home.

The bures are so amazing, they are almost difficult to describe. They are modern, sleek, and comfortable. The roof is a tent, with a larger tent over the whole bure, attached to the ground with steel cables. The walls are all glass, which lets you appreciate the gardens. The bathroom is modern, with a rainshower (with glass walls), and the toilet being in a separate room with frosted glass walls. There is air conditioning, which was welcome (especially with the glass). For privacy, there is a white curtain that can be pulled around the room. The furnishings and walls are dark wood, with recessed lighting. At night, with the lights, reflecting off the glass, it is relaxing, warm, and very comfortable.

We only were able to stay a 8 hours or so, and, aside from the pool and massage hut, there are not alot of activities. However, guests in the past have rented cars and explored the local area. The hotel is located about 25-30 minutes from Nadi airport, and we took a taxi both ways, which was easily arranged through our travel agent. We enjoyed lunch, did some reading, and enjoyed the gardens. The Orchid is perfect for a short stay, and I couldn't have been more impressed by the design and attention to detail of the bures. If you were coming in from a long oversease flight, and had an overnight layover before going to a final destination, the Fiji Orchid is a fabulous and elegant welcome to Fiji.

My wife and I stayed here for 1 night before we went to our island resort. It was such an amazing place that we stayed here for a few hours before our flight departed back to the States. The hosts are very friendly and very nice. The food is AMAZING. I flight from NZ arrived late in the afternoon so we needed a place to stay before we took the boat out to the resort the next day. The Fiji Orchid is about a 30 minute taxi ride from the airport and about 45 minutes to Port Denarau. If you need a place to stay for a night I highly recommend this place. It is just a very relaxing place.

We stayed at the Resort for a short 2 day stay, I wish we had arranged to stay longer. The Burr we stayed in was probably the nicest "hut" we have experienced in all our travels. I cannot even describe how beautiful it was, look at their web site. We ate at the resort and each meal that we picked, was fresh fish and vegetables. Homemade bread for toast each morning and the best coffee we had in the 19 days we stayed in Fiji.
We opted for the late checkout so we would be rested for the night flight home. We didn't leave the resort at all, we swam in the pool non stop and relaxed. The grounds was covered with plants and you will think you are staying in a botanical garden.
