We stayed here for two nights at the beginning and end of our Fiji holiday. Our first night we arrived late and had a pickup from the airport arranged by the hotel which was great. On arrival at the Orchid, we were greeted with umbrellas and cool drinks, and checked in quickly. We then grabbed our umbrellas and made the trek to our bure. Don't get me wrong, the bure is fine, but so hugely overpriced I really don't understand it. There is nothing inside to warrant the cost - no coffee/tea making facilities, no TV, our second room didn't even have a radio. The toiletries are limited to some hotel wrapped soaps. The hand pump soap in the shower smelt terrible and had to be washed off with the cheap hotel soap.
We did venture to the restaurant on the first night, for dinner it was $156FJD for two people, no drinks. Extortionate prices for Fiji, and for the quality and quantity of food received. The entree was practically non existent, and the prawns we ate for main were of poor quality and falling apart on the plate. Dessert of cake was nice. The main thing that put us off dinner was in the background what appeared to be hotel management/staff watching American Idol and Rugby on the TV just behind us. So instead of getting the beautiful serene peace we had hoped for, we had this to contend with. After dinner we made the trek (I say trek as it is a walk through lots of trees with many toads along the way!) back to our room. As we turned all the lights off, the rain started. Normally not an issue right? Well, when you have a canvas roof it is a massive issue. Even when the rain stopped, the dripping continued all night. We had to leave early in the morning and were just exhausted.
We had prepaid for another night at the end of our trip and I really wasn't looking forward to it at all. Again our pickup at the airport was smooth, check in was great. This time a lady named Mele greeted us and was super friendly so my hopes were lifted. We decided to avoid dinner and eat some chips in our room. This time our bure was on the other side of the path, and the noise all night was insane. There were cars constantly going past - we're still not sure where though as we could only hear them, not see them - it rained heavily for hours on our canvas roof, and our friendly bure neighbours decided to play blaring music till 2am. Unfortunately you can't do anything about this as it doesn't appear there is a phone in your room to call anyone. Unless of course I missed that, although I'm not sure where they could put it as the room is fairly tiny. So another horrible sleepless night and I can assure them that I won't be going back.
Not only is this place a good half hour drive from the airport I just can't work out why it costs so much to stay here. The rooms are definately not luxury, there are no real amenities provided and the meals are cafe quality at best.
There are many options near the airport that I would choose next time, for a third of the price, when all you want is to sleep...
