We stayed here for 5 nights after 2 nights in 5 star accommodation in Denaru. The rooms are older and the wifi is sparse but the people are great. While the staff in Denaru were polite and attentive the staff at Koro sun seemed genuinely pleased to see you. We were met with a foot soak and massage and sent off with a farewell song. In between we were greeted warmly and often by name, particularly our children.
The food was lovely, fresh and plentiful with lots of vegetables and salads available (far better than what we got in Denaru). There are activities planned for each day you can sign up for, if there is something you particularly want to do they will work it into your stay. The tours are not fancy but they are fun and the scenery is lovely. We also enjoyed kayaking, snorkelling and a walk around bat island.
A big plus for us was the kids club as we were travelling with our 2 boys aged 5 and 3. The kids club staff were flexible with times and happy to accompany us on trips or stay at the club with our boys. I wasn't sure they would want to leave us but our second morning there our 5 year was asking when he could go to kids club and by our third morning our just-turned-3 year was asking. There were tears when we left and a month later our 5 yr old still talks of Bobby, and what toys he can send to the kids club.
The grounds are beautiful and at times it seemed like we were the only guests at the resort, until dinner where we would see the other guests and chat around the bar. Our bure was up the hill some other reviewers have mentioned. It did feel a bit steep after a few times back and forth but I bought a sulu (Fijian version of sarong), tied my 3 yr old on when he didn't want to walk and figured I deserved another cocktail. If you don't want the climb just book a bure down the hill. My husband mentioned curtains to the manager, as our bure had only filmy see through ones and our youngest was waking us at 5.30am with the sun, and we had some up that evening when we returned.
Overall it was a relaxing atmosphere and I got to see some of the real Fiji as well as enjoy a comfortable bed, good food and good company (of people who were previously strangers).

Thanks for the review Naomi. I told Bobby about your review and he said to say thank you and a Big Bula to the boys. We really do try to give guests a taste of the real Fiji and you guys certainly did your best to get that. It's great when we get to see friendships formed with guests from different parts of the world and that is probably one of the big benefits of being a boutique resort. There is never a need for an excuse for an extra cocktail though, of which from memory you did sample a few ;o) With Vodafone adding the new tower down the road, we should also have phones in all the rooms by the end of the year so that will make it a bit easier for families etc on the second level to call down for things. Great to have had you here and hope to see you in our little slice of paradise again one day.

We just got back from Koro Sun and had an incredible time there. Beautiful place and beautiful people, Totoka!!
We have 3 boys ages 4-7 and everyone enjoyed it thoroughly. The staff were so friendly and helpful and i cant compliment the kids club members enough. So hands on and such a great setup with heaps of activities. We have never done a kids club before and we are already planning our next trip back. The boys all did handline fishing, kayaking, etc etc and the list of activities is incredible and they catered to each boy according to his capabilities.
The ability of staff to arrange and cater for requests was fantastic
A huge thank you to everyone at Koro for making this holiday so special for us.

Thanks for the review Kenny & Joanie. Still cant believe how great your boys were compared to my little monsters. We are really pleased they enjoyed their time with the Kids Club buddies and that you were able to get some time to yourselves as well as connect with the kids. We look forward to having you back.

Last time we stayed at one of the large 5 star resorts over in Denarau. This time we were looking for a small boutique resort with a focus on family activities and great service. We weren't disappointed, and Koro Sun exceeded our expectations in all respects.

We stayed in an Edge Water villa, and even though they were on special due to construction, this was not a problem at all. Most days we were either out on the many and varied excursions, or at the main area of the resort, so the construction was hardly noticeable.

The activities were great and made so much easier by the "buddy" assigned to our 5 year old son for the duration of our stay. He quickly became a favourite with our son, and helped in all activities from rainforest walks, snorkelling, fishing and kayaking.

The service from the staff was fantastic! They quickly learnt our names and nothing was too much trouble (particularly when it came to whatever our son wanted!). The food and bar service was very well done. Even cooked up the fish we caught!

We really appreciated the more personal service from a smaller resort. The range of activities were great, and we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. Fantastic!

Thanks for the review Matt. We are certainly different to Denarau and as we have said before do our best to provide the real Fiji experience. I am definitely lucky to have a team of such great staff. They make it easy to provide the service we do because being happy and helpful is their natural way of doing things. I am looking forward to the construction being finished soon and opening up the new Edgewater Villas designed for couples at the end of the month. Glad to hear it didn't effect your stay as its easy to get lost in the 70 acres of resort and 90 acres of rainforest. All the best.

My husband and I came here for our honeymoon we are a young couple from Sydney.
Overall we had a great time, it was a traditional fijian experience. On arrival we were met with a fijian song a foot massage and a fresh juice, while the general manager Ty came and introduced himself. It is true what he has said about the "yes we can" attitude. Anything we needed they could arrange. I couldn't commend the staff more highly. All of the staff new our names immediately, they were so friendly and genuine. The activities staff were amazing and so easy to get along with.
We stayed in one of the edgewater villas. I did expect a little more luxury for close to $750 a night (i did have to keep in mind meals are also included in this price) Koro Sun has not been completely westernised yet like hotels in bali/thailand etc. There is no phones in the rooms. If you need something or need a quick question answered you have to walk back to the resort 2-5min walk. The decor is dated and didn't give a luxury feel. Also there is no blackout curtains in the edgewater villas so you were awake when the sun came up- it was extremely bright in the rooms. The size of the villa is quite large but overall didn't meet our expectations. Don't expect the nice clear blue water at the bottom of the ladder it's more like dark green/blue murky lake water that wasn't inviting at all.The private plunge pool at the front of the villa was freezing also. There was only one spoon, knife and fork-but i'm sure if we asked for extras they would have delivered them to us. The air con wasn't that cool but the breeze made up for it. Although the downstairs air con dripped water all over the floor for 3 days and house keeping just mopped it up for us when they came to clean our room each day which was fine.We also woke up to no hot or cold water which lasted for nearly 2 days we couldn't shower or flush the toilet. They did offer a day room for us to shower in which was a good 5 minute walk away up a steep hill and once we got there it was only cold water so couldn't shower properly there either. There is no wifi in the villa's. and only a TV that plays DVD's which was good for us when we just wanted to relax. The resort is split over the road the edge water villas are on the beach (at low tide above sand) and the main part of the resort is across the road. There is no lighting to cross the road at night so we used our iphones there is also no lighting when you get to edgewater villa number 2 and 1. This needs to be fixed. I would recommend this hotel for a quick relaxing getaway but wouldn't recommend it if your looking for a luxurious honeymoon resort. If your a young or even older couple looking for bars to drink at in town you wont find it here. The only bars to drink at is the ones your resort provides. Koro sun's bar was fine and had happy hour from 4-7pm everyday with a great selection of cocktails. Ty the general manager was at the bar every night as well which was great. This was a good time to meet all the other guests as well. Being in our late twenties though we were looking for a little bit more of a nightlife.
Thank you for an enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: The beds were good, just needed blackout curtains to get more sleep.

We are very happy these guests generally had a great time and enjoyed the staff so well. Thanks for pointing out a few of the features of the room, in addition to mentioning the telecommunications factors for future guests to consider. With very few places to unplug these days, we offer a place for guests to escape TV services, telephones and internet while in many of our bures and villas. We do offer use of these facilities such as internet and telephones in our clubhouse for guests.

Although being on a remote tropical island has its obvious advantages, obtaining parts for repairs etc is not one of them. We do thank all of our guests for being so understanding. Due to the recent rains the water which empties from our river into the ocean did tend to make the water a little murky, but this is not the regular state of the water. Thank you for the feedback on blackout curtains, I will look to buy the material and have these made over the coming weeks. Due to the recent construction of a bure (complete December 1st) the path lights to the Edgewater Villas 1 & 2 were not operating, but are now working again. We will also fit some lights for the way over to the Edgewater area of the resort. With only just over a month to go on constructions it will be good to get everything back to normal and have our amazing brand new Edgewater Bures and beach front pool in operation.

What a wonderful place to stay, great for the Kids, loads of activity's, meals included in our price and tasted fantastic, we hired a car for the day to drive around the island and said we did not need lunch so they offered to pack a picnic lunch and did so in 1/2 an hour. the Thursday night Meke show performed by the locals is a must do. if you are into a busy resort with lots of party's this is not for you but we made more friends staying here than we did on Denerua island which was to busy and over commercialised for us and next time will stay 2 weeks here instead of staying on he south island. only negative comment I can leave is the tree top Bures are a little out dated and had no TV but the Kids were to busy all day to worry about watching TV at night.
We paid less to stay here including meals, Kids club and activities than we did on the south which charged for meals, Kids club and no activities. The staff that work here are the nicest people you will ever meet.

Room Tip: Tree top bures have a steep hill you have to walk up and our 3yr old had a couple of scrapped knees...

Koro Sun Resort:
If you’re looking for a resort which is laid back, more traditional, and gives a more authentic feel to it, then the Koro Sun would be a good match. If you’re looking for a big resort where everything is at your beckon call, and you’re looking for a big party resort, then Koro Sun is not what you’re looking for.
General Manager:
I have seen a few reviews about the management not being able to help with issues people had at the resort, and overall having poor reviews about the management. From the experience that my girlfriend and I had, the manager of the resort was very friendly, and seemed very eager to assist us if we had any issues on the one occasion where he had introduced himself. With that said though, outside of that one evening, he never really approached patrons asking how their stay was throughout the day for the week we were there. The only way we knew he was the manager of the resort was because we met him at the meet and greet event. Had we not met him at that event there would have been no way that we would have known who he was.
Office Staff:
Overall the management / office staff on duty was always very nice, and seemed very helpful at all times, and very approachable if we had any issues. Nothing negative to say about the office staff.
Activities Staff / General staff:
The activities staff, and general staff is what saves this resort in my opinion. My girlfriend and I had the opportunity to go on many different excursions. This was made possible by the activities staff being very flexible with our schedules. If we had ANY questions, or needed something the staff was very responsive, and very helpful. While at the resort there were a few things that we needed the staff to assist us at our room (we had a few bees in our room, when we first arrived the safe in the room did not work properly). In both instances the staff addressed the issues, trying to do everything they could to make sure that our stay was as comfortable as possible.
Drawbacks:
This resort is currently under construction. This was a big drawback for us. We had initially booked the trip, and a week or so before going, we noticed the website was updated. It was at this moment which we saw there were new units being added. BEFORE leaving we contacted the resort directly and asked specifically if there was any construction going on. Our question was ignored, and upon arrival found out that there was construction taking place outside of our waterfront villa. This was a major let down for us. FROM WHAT WE WERE TOLD CONSTRUCTION IS GOING TO GO THROUGH THE END OF 2013. Because of this issue, there were many things which would be considered part of their “regular operations” which were not regular at all.
The construction starts at 7 AM and goes until about 5:30. My girlfriend and I were active doing activities away from our villa, so for the majority of the time, the construction noise was not too big of a deal for us.
Because of the construction, the main beach directly across the street from the main complex was closed. The resort accommodated the patrons by allowing free access (normally 5 FJD) to another beach which is about a 5 minute bike ride up the road.
Another major drawback was that many of the beaches on this island did not have vast stretches of sandy beaches. We didn’t travel to other resorts, however from what I saw on the island, much of this island did not have vast sandy beaches; so can’t really fault Koro Sun for that.
Wireless internet is available but for a fee; 10 Fijian dollars per hour. Internet is ONLY available in the common area / lounge of the resort. If you looking for internet in your room this is not an option. For me personally this was not a major issue, and the connection speed is decent.
Meals:
If you’re picky about food, and you want to eat whenever; then this resort is not for you. The resort has breakfast, lunch, and dinner scheduled at a specific time of the day. If you miss out, then you would have to wait until the next meal time. This MAY be a drawback for some, however for my girlfriend and I, the meal times for breakfast, lunch, and dinner were quite flexible and easily manageable with our schedule, so this was not an issue for us.
A big plus on the meals is that most if not all the vegetables we had were grown on site, which was really a nice, as you saw where your food was coming from, and was very fresh.
Edgewater Villas:
Overall Edgewater villa review:
We stayed in the Edgewater villas, because we got a discount. With the construction going on, we now know why we got the discount. Overall the villa was very clean, and spacious. The bed was very comfortable, and the sheets on the bed would be changed out upon request, as the resort was doing what they could to conserve water. We got new clean towels every day, and never had issues with not having enough clean towels. The room also had access to the water directly off our deck. Above we had a nice patio area in which you could sit out and look over the water. We also had a private swim area around the front of the villa. This was a very nice touch, but the water was quite cool.
Negatives on Edgewater villa:
The biggest negative on the Condo, was that the safe in the room is VERY small. It was the size of a kindle, and not larger. Besides putting in your wallet, a very small purse and your passport, not much else could fit in the safe. I had read reviews about things going missing at this resort. We did not have any issues with anything going missing during our stay at our resort.
Our particular condo had a few bees in it. During the winter we were told that it was not uncommon for bees to go indoors. After a few days of having a few bees in our room, we asked the office staff if they could spray for bees. Within 30 minutes of asking, there was someone in our villa spraying the bees, and after he had sprayed we were bee free for the remainder of the time we were there.
During our stay it had rained very heavily. When going downstairs we noticed there were MULTIPE parts of the ceiling which were leaking. Again we did not make a huge deal about this, and when asking other patrons about their Edgewater villas, and if they leaked, we got similar stories. As this resort is expanding, I am hopeful that they also would spend the time and money to properly maintain and fix their existing properties as well.
The only other negative about the villa is the walkway up to the villa was not lit that great. There were lights between the villas however when crossing the street there were no lights. We were told to look both ways before crossing, which was good, because cars drove by quite fast on the hibiscus highway…..
Negatives on activities:
The only real negative that I found on the activities were some of the kayaks and kayak paddles were well used / some were damaged to the point where on some activities, a 2 person kayaks had only one paddle per kayak, but that was with a large group.
I would hope that with the new construction going in, the resort also replaces and updates many of their outdoor equipment for everyone’s use. Fortunately my girlfriend and I were not afraid of going into the water, and we both knew how to kayak, so using one paddle was not an issue and we managed with the existing equipment.
Overall value:
With the discounted rate on the Edgewater villa, I feel the rate we paid was fair. At the full price I would think it’s on the expensive side. I understand that part of going there is to disconnect from the rest of the world, and not worry about e-mails and internet and such. However for the price paid I would think that they would offer free internet for the computer in their lobby.
The statement “you get what you pay for” holds true. On the day when we had checked out, we were able to get a day room where we were no longer in our Edgewater villa. This particular unit had multiple issues, with the water pressure and water temperature. While showing the temperature would fluctuate from just right, to ice cold, to too hot to stand under. This was within 2 minutes of the water running….. Had we had these sorts of issues with our edgewater villa, the above review would have been very different review and not as good of an experience as we had with Koro Sun.

We are thankful for the detailed feedback. After numerous suggestions about free internet we now provide this in the main clubhouse of the resort. We apologise for the lack of service at the edgewater during the week this guest stayed as parts are not readily available to repair damaged equipment. Our internet provider is currently waiting on parts from overseas for this repair.

We do have some construction going on at the resort hence the discounts we are currently running which featured as a 50% "Construction Discount" for this guest. Our marketing for this discount is very clear so it was a surprise they were unaware of it prior to coming. I do apologise if we failed to return a call regarding this as it was certainly not our intention to not be forthcoming about this. After being made aware of the minor leaks in the edgewater bure we have made temporary repairs until we have a dryer period (hopefully next week) and will affect permanent repairs.

At Koro Sun Resort we will serve your meals almost anywhere at anytime. I am unsure why this guest was not catered for in this manner, but assure all future guests that our meals service is 100% flexible and apologise for the fact their requests were not met. Early or late meals are no issue as are specific requests, special meals, or items such as a fruit platter or condiments etc. All one need do is ask, as "Yes we Can".

As a note to future guests, if you ask for something at our resort and are told "no we cant", then ask for me by name to discuss your request.

I'm sorry to see you felt that guest issues raised on trip advisor are not solved as stated in your review? Since I commenced in February 2013 we are active in engaging guests with review forms prior to departure, as well as inquiring with guests during their stay. We are very active in resolving any maintenance or service issues that arise, if you have specific concerns about reviews or have any issues during your stay please don't hesitate to reach out to me directly. I do apologise for not being out as much as usual the week of this guests stay as I was solidly working on EOY financial statements with a project that unexpectedly came up. I am glad though that for the most part our method of featuring the Fijian staff as the face of our business did cater for their needs and gave them an enjoyable stay, as I wholeheartedly agree they are what make this resort as special as it is.

This is a lovely resort just minutes away from the airport and the city center.
Although we enjoyed our stay, it did feel a little overpriced at 480 usd a night.

The staff is friendly but there is a bit of over-advertisement on the website in the descriptions of both the activities and the rooms.
For example we expected more from our "Fantasy Suite Turndown Service [...] followed by a trio of decadent desserts to finish the night": this was in fact a rolled towel, shaped into a heart on the bed with some flower petals inside the shape. The trio of decadent desserts was a regular vanilla ice cream (melted because the fridge didn't work) with three tiny tarts filled with bland cream.
There was also no guide on a guided snorkeling trip, average food vs gourmet advertised, rainforest "trekking" had to be stopped halfway because the guide didn't know the way. In the room, towels were dirty and not replaced consistently, I could go on but you get the idea.

There is a good range of activities and things to do in the resort and around and as mentioned above the staff is very nice and tries to help when possible.

All in all this is a nice 3 star resort. It would be 4 if its rough edges were ironed out.

Room Tip: We liked the edgewater villa. Plenty of space. However you can't really swim right out of them.

We are disappointed with this review of our resort, especially considering that other guests stayed in the same week with such positive reviews. Of course expectations are different with every guest, as is their level of satisfaction with the same service.
It is disappointing that again this guest did not raise any concerns whilst here at the resort so that we could attend to any issue they had. As we have stated many times here, and we tell every guest, "Please" let us know of any issue no matter how small, so we cant fix it or do our best to make up for it if it cant be changed. Our motto is "Yes we can". We want every guest to have a perfect stay and everyone's definition of perfect is different, so let us know what your is and we will do every thing we can to make it happen.

In regard to the two instances for our activities, We have guided snorkel trips scheduled 2-3 times a week and all of these have guides. If they went snorkelling at other times (as snorkel equipment is provided free by the resort) then a guide may not have been available unless specifically booked. The rain forest trek again is scheduled once a week and is taken by one of our guides, guests are welcome to head out on foot on their own as well. On this specific day we were catering for a few activities at once, and yes the wrong team member was allocated for this activity and he became a little confused on the paths so rather than get lost he returned to the resort early. We apologise for failing the guests on this occasion, as the appropriate guide should have been available and the replacement was not as knowledgeable about this specific activity.

We apologise for not giving the best stay for this guest, however we stand behind our product and staff as excellent value for money and that our marketing is an accurate reflection of what we provide. Something I believe that is reflected in many other reviews in recent months. If there are specific concerns or questions regarding our website, and information please don't hesitate to contact us: marketing@korosunresort.com
