Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort Fiji

We took our two boys aged 4 & 8 and they had a lovely time at the resort. It definitely is one of the best resorts on Fiji for children. Kids were entertained throughout the day and we felt we could have a holiday too while they were busy with their buddies. The rooms are lovely and the food is great. We did get annoyed though when they had a crab race for the children and didnt tell us there was $50 charge per crab. There were 15 children that entered to play, so the resort made $750 in 5 minutes, and all they had to do was give a child a hermit crab and whoever reached the line first won. The winner received a certificate and bottle of cheap wine. Another issue was when we received our bill for the end of the stay, they billed us a daily donation charge on the bill? We asked them to remove it immediately as we did not ask to donate to the resort particularly as the resort is already quite expensive.

Room Tip: Make sure you check your bill and be prepared to pay $50 per crab race

Our trip to Jean-Michel Cousteau was a last minute choice as the resort we were meant to go to was closed by the cyclone. Our travel agent Kelly recommended J-MC and we are so grateful that she did. We were greeted at Nadi airport by a resort representative and from that moment on we were spoiled for 8 days.
The resort itself is spectacular, I could not imagine a more beautiful setting. We stayed in a garden bure with a 4 year old and a 6 year old. The bure was immaculate, spacious and airy (one of my concerns prior to our holiday was a lack of airconditioning - it was totally unfounded as we were never in our room during the day and at night a lovely breeze flowed through the open louvred windows).
Bula club is incredible. Our 4 and a half year old boy Jack had his own nanny everyday - for as long or as little as required. His nanny Alec was brilliant, and Jack wanted to spend all day everyday with him. Our 6 year old daughter Jade was a bit hesitant about Bula club to begin with, but soon came out of her shell and loved it. Alec took her under his wing too. What is so brilliant about Bula club, is that kids can spend as little or as long there as they like.
The food for us adults was beautiful, especially the seafood. I must admit I found the kids food slightly overwhelming (perhaps we have fussy eaters!), but the chef is more than happy to cater for different needs. We started to simply order sandwiches for lunch for our kids and they staff happily obliged.
The trip to the village is fantastic, as is the picnic on private island. Our kids loved exploring it and could not get enough of walking in the shallow water surrounded by small reef sharks, starfish and even a turtle. Low tide is apparently the best time to go so you can walk around the island itself.
So whilst our kids played hermit crab races, kayaked, made spears and grass skirts, snorkelled and painted t-shirts(amongst many other things), we read, ate, dozed, relaxed, talked and even managed to get slightly active by snorkelling, swimming and kayaking.
What makes J-MC so memorable is the staff. From the grounds staff, to the housekeeping staff, activity staff to the restaurant/bar staff, staff in the wonderful spa and of course the Bula club staff. Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff. This was our first overseas holiday as a family and you made it truly memorable. I cannot finish this without once again mentioning Jack's (and inevitably Jade's )nanny Alec. You are made for this job vanaka.

Room Tip: I really do not think there would be a bad room.

We took our daughter 4 & son 2 to Jean-Michel Cousteau for a week and had such an amazing week. We are already planning the return trip as this resort has bumped our other holiday destinations down the list! The staff were the best we had experienced and they made us feel at home the whole time. The kids loved it as much as we did and we all made some really neat friends during the week. The diving was excellent, unfortunately we couldn't get out to Namena so it's a priority for next time. Our daughter was content to max out her time at the Bula Club with her friends so our 2yo son & I spent a lot of time on the glass bottom kayak and Jope took us for a sail on the Hobie-cat, it was great & that was my relaxation time while my wife watched from her day-bed at the pool for her relaxation time (as well as massages)!. The food was also a highlight and we looked forward to every meal. I knew it was time to leave when we started ordering desserts for lunch!! The kids ate with us but at dinner we would hang out at the Bula Club and they'd have an early dinner with the other kids and then movie, crab racing or Johnny's marine presentation. Some evenings the nannies would put them to bed and wait at the bure until we finished our amazing dinner by the pool. It was a perfect mix of getting to spend quality time with my wife (knowing the kids were having a ball, or sleeping) and hanging out with the kids, swimming, kayaking, sailing etc... No tv's or phones in the bure's, a big plus! No air-con was fine for us, we all slept really well. It was just a great mix of the Fijian culture, great service, food, activities, family time. There were tears when the staff lined up with guitars to sing farewell to us ;)
We'll be back next year!!! Highly recommended.

My husband, 12 year old son and I have been to Fiji numerous times but this was by far the best resort we have stayed at. My husband is a diver and my son completed his resort course and was able to experience the underwater world for the first time with his dad.

Don't let the price put you off. It is quite comparable with other resort islands due to so many inclusions. The service is excellent and the food beautiful. The resort has 25 bures and at full capacity, there was no overcrowding whatsoever. No need to rise at 5 am to reserve a day bed. No line-ups for food, kayaks or catamarans. One of the most comfortable beds we've slept in (loved the orange day beds by the pool ....). Bures are well appointed and if you can spend that little extra, go for the beachfront. Free wi-fi a big plus and they even had thatched baskets in the bure to take personal belongings to the pool. Pack light as dress code is very casual and laundry service inexpensive.

We originally booked for 6 nights and after the 4th night we decided to extend. The staff changed our flights, extended travel insurance etc. Nothing was ever too much to ask.

This is an ideal resort for people with young children. The Bula Club is amazing and very flexible. Some children would stay all day and others would come and go as they pleased. We would ask people what their kids were up to and they would say "I don't know" (with a beaming smile on their face). Kids were very happy to leave their parents' side.

Thank you to all the staff at JMC for the most relaxing holiday we have ever experienced. Thank you to all the fabulous people we met (and the late night swims ...), thank you to the Bula Band for their entertainment and last, but not least, thanks to JJ for having a game of tennis with our son !!!

We just returned from a seven day holiday at Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort. It's the best holiday we have ever had. We have three children, a boy 10, a girl 8 and another boy 5. They just loved the Bula (Kids) Club and so did we. The youngest, because of his age, had a full time 'buddy' appointed to him called Meli who was just great. But everyone at the Bula Club, both women and men, were fantastic with the kids and you felt that sense of them being real naturals with the children. We loved the club too, especially because they kept the kids active from swimming games in the pool to boat trips out snorkelling to playing tennis and just making sure they were happy and active with a wind-down film at the end of day. Our mornings would start with our kids busting to get out the door to Bula Club and rolling their eyes with disinterest or disdain whenever we checked in to see how they were! Like what do you want Mum and Dad, can't you see we're busy and having fun!

That left us to relax by the pool and read, or take our own snorkeling trips, as well as canoe (wonderful to do towards late afternoon). I'm not a diver but people seemed to enjoy that as well. There was also a great scenic trip out into the countryside to swim at a waterfall (though I would not recommend it for kids below age 6 as the combined bus trip and hike are too strenuous) and an equally interesting morning spent on Saturday at the local Farmer's Market.

The resort tries to invest in supporting the local community and environment in an ecologically aware and harmonious way and that affected the whole vibe of the place. You certainly felt staff were happy and proud of what they were doing. And that because of the ecologically and culturally aware ethos behind what the resort, the type of people who had paid to come there as tourists were also genuinely nice and respectful. It's not often you go to a resort and feel you are meeting so many good and interesting people among both the staff and your fellow visitors. We met one family that we hope will be lifelong friends.

I can't say enough good things about this place. The food was excellent too, with a good menu and fine, friendly, casual service. The kind of service where people are keen to help without being on top of you.

When it comes to 5-star travel and eco tourism it is hard to fault, especially if you're a parents with a few young kids in tow where you want everyone to be happy, entertained and even inspired as well as simply having a genuine holiday and feeling positive about it on so many levels. We were all very sad to leave!

Amazing, amazing, amazing family destination. It's an adventure, cultural experience, resort, relaxation rolled into one . The food is great, the children are well looked after. If you don't dive, the snorkeling is fab. What it doesn't have - white sandy beaches but you soon get over that and either swim off the dock or swim in the pools. It may not be the best for tweens who are too young for the grown up pool and too young for the kiddie pool (which is fantastic). Definitely check on that. Love, love, love this place. Don't be daunted by the flight, especially if you're travelling from the West Coast, I find it easier than Hawaii, even though it's longer, and well worth going the extra distance.
