We stayed at SigaSiga Sands COCO Cottage for six nights. The cottage is small and comfortable for a single or couple; with a separate kitchen down a couple of covered steps. The photos on the website accurately reflect the cottage and kitchen interiors. The cottage has lovely views across the developing gardens to the beach, snorkelling lagoon and the ocean beyond. Also a five minute walk down the beach towards Savu Savu you will find a safe swimming lagoon. Most likely TukTuk the resident and very friendly dog, will accompany you on your trips to the beach, including the snorkelling and swimming lagoon and she loves a swim. Most nights we found TukTuk camped on our verandah having a nap or waiting for a friendly pat in the morning. Gene, your host and activity coordinator is more than happy to provide advice on where to go on the Island. We enjoyed a dolphin, snorkelling and pizza trip to La Dolca Vita, which is a 20 minute drive down the road; and a separate trip to the waterfall where you can swim to your hearts content.
Another bonus was the large TV and plethera of choices of DVDs which Gene has available, which came in handy of the couple of rainy days we had.
If you want to get away from the crowds, enjoy peace and quiet, have a bonfire on the beach under the stars and 'relax' the this is the place for you.

Bula Steve!

Thanks for taking the time to post your review. It was great to have you!

Tuktuk says "Bula!" too. As you know, she is happy to adopt our guests. If, for any reason, she is imposing (haven't heard of it yet :-)) we have plenty of space for her roam away from any cottage.

Take care and hope to see you both in the near future. A great excuse to return is to visit our new bure nearing completion within 2 weeks. :-)

Warm regards,
Gene

Our stay at Sigasiga Sands Coco Bure was the most relaxing 3 weeks holiday we have experienced. The well equipped kitchen meant we could buy fresh food from the local Savusavu market and cook at our leisure. Subash the caretaker and his wife Sunita made our stay very enjoyable. Sunita cooks tasty local cuisine with short notice. An on site massage is available with Geeta (very good!) Great shower and very comfortable bed.
Snorkelling in the lagoon off the outer reef was excellent, with large fish, white tip reef sharks and an assortment of smaller fish. Beautiful coral. Thanks to Gene the owner
for renting out a great piece of paradise at a very affordable price.

Blue water and white sand greet you at this beautiful Fijian resort. The host Gene is amazing and thoroughly enjoy the time we spent together, felt like family.
The Fijian family that works for Gene are there for your every want or need. Sunita makes a wonderful dinner if you don't feel like cooking.
The villa was beyond our expectations, everything you needed was there.
We were greeted with handmade lei's and fresh flowers in the villa, a very nice touch and not expected.
As advertised there is a coral reef out front, that is easily accessed in low tide with a good pair of reef shoes, lot's of fish and colourful coral.
The Blue Lagoon is another gem just minutes away, accessed by a leisurely walk down the beach, a great swimming hole protected from the ocean.
Gene has a couple of kayaks for trips in the beautiful blue water of Fiji.
The sunsets were amazing, that alone was worth the trip.
If you want a relaxing holiday that you determine what and when you want to do this is the place to go.

“Absolute Perfection!”

After a long day of travelling the islands, SigaSiga was absolutely perfect. Eugene was gone when I arrived, but I just sat on the front porch observing paradise until he arrived. Cozy and ideal, this small burre lives up to every description and photo listed here...Which says a lot! The staff was hard to get a hold of and I didn't get to rent the movies available because of that, but the property and bliss of the experience more than made up for this.
I didn't get to test the ocean due to poor conditions, but it's important to note that even Eugene will note this location as an intermediate-advanced snorkeling location. Not a problem, just worth noting.

One thing I simply must recommend... Hire a scooter! For about $55/day you can rent a scooter in SavuSavu and make your own travel itinerary without having to find a (hopefully) reasonable taxi. I went down the coast, then back all the way to the Jacques Cousteau resort and back without any trouble. This also allowed for easy market and grocery shopping to prepare meals in your own private kitchen.

My one night spent here was one of the highlights of my Fiji adventure, and I highly suspet it will be yours also.
Vinaka vakalevu, Eugene!

Bula vinaka!
Short and sweet eh? Hopefully we can have you for a longer stay next time. :-) The reef is still awesome and our movie library continues to grow for those occasions when it may be raining and you feel like a bit of inside entertainment. Our resident staff all have mobile phones and are normally onsite about 6.5 days/nights a week. So I'm surprised you couldn't connect with them. Sorry about that. By the way, we have new flat screen LCD TVs now.

Thanks very much for leaving your review! Take care, Gene

“Comfortable Bure, Beautiful Setting”
Reviewed November 21, 2014 for a stay in November 2014

With acres of tropical gardens and coco palms waving overhead, this cozy bure (traditional thatched hut) offers a Robinson Crusoe experience with such modern conveniences as DVR (with large video library available) and WiFi, a wide front porch and a kitchen that lacks only a microwave. The bathroom is exceptionally large and has ample storage.

Except when he's traveling, the owner, California native Gene Calvert, lives next door. He's the soul of laid-back hospitality; and the manager and housekeeper/cook, Sabash and Sunita, are friendly and helpful, We found the service warm and caring but not intrusive. Subash even brought us fresh papayas from the garden.

The town of Subvasuva, accessible by cab for about $9 US or by an occasional bus, can fulfill all your basic food-shopping requirements, plus the need for insect repellent. Fijian mosquitoes are small and hungry, but care with closing the screen doors keeps them out of the bure.

The beach, about 50 yards from the bure, makes a fine spot for reading a paperback thriller in a hammock or on a chaise lounge. Our only disappointment was that you can't swim right off the beach. The Blue Lagoon, a large, warm, sand-bottomed swimming hole, is about 300 meters up the beach, and the snorkeling lagoon straight ahead of the property requires a 15-minute walk over rocks (mostly flat). That walk yielded a happy surprise, however -- scores of tide pools, filled with brittle stars, plus some large blue starfish and schools of tiny juvenile tropical fish, all beginning within a few meters of the beach. The snorkeling lagoon is worth the walk, yielding well-developed coral heads and exciting hot-water vents, evidence of the island's recent volcanic activity.

Since I wanted to experience more of the island's reefs, I booked a morning of diving with KoroSun Divers, based at a resort a few kilometers away. They picked me up at my bure, and the experience was among the best dives I've had.

For those who would rather skip cooking for at least an evening or two, Sunita will prepare Indo-Fijian fare, listed on the menu in the guest guide. Her generous servings are reasonably priced, although our first order, for which we followed her suggestion for "medium" hotness was a bit too mild for our Texas-New Mexico palates. When we asked her to step up the seasoning a notch, the result (a yummy stewed okra) was fine. For religious reasons, Sunita doesn't prepare meat dishes on Tuesday and Saturday, but her vegetarian dishes are tasty and filling. KoroSun has a weekly extravaganza of traditional dance and dinner, for which they provide transportation gratis from the bure.

Thanks so much for writing about us! Your kind words are good reinforcement for us to keep up what we're doing here ever more diligently so future guests may continue to enjoy the SigaSiga experience. A couple minor mentions: the taxi fare to town is now about FJ$13.50 or US$6.50. When you mentioned "recent volcanic activity, I ran for a search online. I was especially curious since I was living on the Big Island of Hawaii for 30 years which is possibly the most active volcano on earth. heehee I hadn't looked it up before. According to my brief research, the last volcanic activity was somewhere between 1500 and 1650AD. As you said though, there is some lingering hot springs activity here and there. I wonder if you enjoyed the Hot Springs Baths in town? Anyways, thanks so much for coming and we hope to see you again soon.

Cheers!

We stayed in the Coco Bure for 6 nights, we would have loved to stay longer, but the secret is out. (Sigasiga is booked months ahead, although it is worth checking) This is a fantastic place to relax, with acres of gardens interspersed by the tallest coconut trees I have ever seen. The property has clear uninterrupted views of the sea and the sound of crashing surf beyond the reef is ever present. It is one of the few places we have found that lives up to the pictures. Take a mask, fins and snorkel as the reef just in front of the property is unspoilt and teeming with tropical fish and beautiful soft coral. The double reef is quite a rare phenomenon. Take an early morning jog up the golden beach and swim in the blue swimming lagoon that is a natural break in the reef and wonderful to swim in. Reef shoes are a must.
Gene is a great host and the staff are very helpful and friendly. Don't forget to look up at the beautiful night skies.

“Authentic Fiji!!!”
Reviewed September 1, 2014 for a stay in August 2014

Where do I even begin? Siga Siga is authentic Fiji paradise!!! We were looking for a place without tourists and a chance to experience Fiji on our own terms and our own time schedule. It was a week without TV spent watching the stars, the water and walking the beach and discovering all kinds of amazing things in tide pools at low tide. We went to the market in SavuSavu and bought fresh fruits and veggies and either cooked our own meals or ate Sunita's yummy cooking! What a refreshing difference to eat clean, local foods instead of commercially grown foods devoid of nutrients!!!
We had planned for this to be a snorkeling trip, but, the weather did not cooperate and it was far too rough for topside snorkeling, so, we opted to get scuba certified at Koro Sun Dive just down the road. We are so glad that we did!!! Please see my review of them for the details!
But, I digress.....Siga Siga was everything we hoped it would be and more! It is truly a one of a kind experience! Out heartfelt thanks go out to Gene and Subash and Sunita and their family for making our stay so tremendous!!! I have to tell you, I have very mixed emotions about putting this review out there. The beauty of Siga Siga is the fact that it is so quiet and tourist-free. Oh, and Vanua Levu is lush and lovely. We hope it will always stay as beautiful as it is today. We fell in love with the island and it's people and were so sad to leave, but, now have decided that we will be back. Bula and Vinaka Gene! Our hearts are there at Siga Siga!!
