“we will come back”
Reviewed November 20, 2009

We stayed at Nakia for 8 nights and I can tell you right away that although we never really return to a place we already stayed at because we want to explore new ones, Nakia is the place we will return because it would be like visiting family or even better yet dear friends (we have a say in France: you get to choose your friends, not really your family:))

Nakia is like the time share you always considered buying because that would make it your home. Well, it's even better. It's home with benefits. Robin, Jim, Julie, Aaron and team are just such great people, you would have to experience it yourself to understand. The food is magnificent and you don't get tired of it because it's like having a sophisticated home cooked meal. They grow their own vegetables and you can totally taste the difference. And sometimes you get nice surprises that are not on the menu... Robin is so attentive and attuned to her guests and witty. The resort is self-powered by an hydro turbine supplemented by wind & solar. Jim is self-taught and passionate about renewable energy which is such a responsible and sustainable way to go. Eco Resort really means something at Nakia.

The diving is awesome and Julie and Aaron are relentless in making sure that the experience is TOP NOTCH. The boat does not take more than 8 divers max (we were never more than 6 with J&A). The crew has such a great sense of humor and is very attentive to your comfort and safety. Aaron and Julie are bringing a professionalism accompagnied by a deep knowledge of Fiji underwater world that we did not see very often anywhere else in the world. They managed very well the intricate complexity of the tide and the currents so that you will never miss a dive.

Nakia is the place to go to recharge your batteries in a magical setting, to read a great book while enjoying the breathtaking view of the straight, to relax around a great conversation and to dive dive dive!! Nakia is not for those who like to be in an unpersonal 300 room 5star resort but a small "island" of tranquility...

Lastly, we can attest first hand of the genuine hospitality of our hosts. If off of the beaten track is what you are looking for, you can go there in confidence you will not be disappointed.

Sam and Lionel (Padi DM)

PS: watch out for the Great White Papaya Whale

We had our best family vacation yet at Nakia Resort and Dive Taveuno Island recently. The food, location and accommodation were all first class. Our hosts Jim and Robyn were so helpful. They made all the difference.
We went diving almost every day. This is rated as one of the best dive sites in the world and dive instructors Julie and Aaron made sure we saw all the best areas.
We hope we can go back and stay again!

Stayed in the family bure with my husband and sister. There was plenty of room. The beds and furniture were comfortable. The bathroom had a large walk-in shower, private toilet and a large counter with two sinks so there was plenty of room for all of us. There was a large veranda overlooking the water which also had a line available for drying clothes.

I really enjoyed being able to run right from the resort along the main road. There is minimal traffic and the locals are very friendly. I felt totally safe. The pool an Nakia is great for swimming laps and/or just relaxing. The water is quite refreshing and it doesn't have a lot of chlorine.

My husband fulfilled a lifelong dream to scuba dive and was actually able to become PADI certified through the excellent guideance of Julie and Aaron. Most of the time he had one on one support and was able to complete several dives after obtaining his certification.

The food at the resort is by far the best on the Island...hands down! This was my third trip to Taveuni and I was blown away by the meals at Nakia with wonderful fresh fruits, vegetables, fish etc. The presentation is amazing. Desserts are to die for. My favorite was the carrot cake although I didn't realize cinnamon rolls were an option until the morning we were leaving. Good to know there will be something new to try on our next visit!

The owners of the resort, as well as their staff, are truly delightful. I would like to pre-order cinnamon rolls for breakfast upon my next arrival!

My husband and I were lucky enough to find Nakia Resort and Dive on Trip Advisor. We had been looking for a place to get married in Fiji and we did a lot of research on different islands and what seemed like hundreds of resorts. After reading all of the incredible reviews on Trip Advisor for Nakia Resort and Dive, we sent them an email with various questions and concerns. We received a speedy and detailed response to our questions. We exchanged several emails with the owners, Jim and Robin Kelly, giving them the ideas/details of our dream wedding. They immediatley impressed us with their knowledge of Fiji and their expertise on putting together our wedding. They listened to our ideas, they gave us excellent input and suggestions. All of this and we had not even booked with them yet. They impressed us so much that we decided to book the entire resort for 2 full weeks for our wedding and our 10 guests.

The resort sits on a beautiful bluff overlooking the ocean. The gounds are impeccable, with Jim overseeing every detail. The 4 bures are spaced out very well and each has a sense of privacy. The center piece of the resort is the Cliff House Restaurant and the swimming pool and believe me we spent plenty of time at both. The food is amazing and they took care of our every dietary need. Robin would check in with us on a daily basis to see if we wanted anything special. It truly felt like we were staying with our parents, except the food was way better.

The staff was very helpful and they took care of our every need. Our bures were cleaned daily and they even did our laundry. We also did 3 days of diving with Julie and Aaron. It was simply the best diving experience we have ever had. They are so passionate about scuba diving and it shows in everything they do. They run a first class operation and safety is their top priority. Their boat is amazing and they have some of the best maintained equipment we have ever used.

The wedding day was truly our dream wedding and they handled every single detail. It was a perfect day at the perfect place. The food was incredible, the decorations were perfect and the homemade wedding cake was amazing. All of our guests had a great time and I think they were all a little envious of our perfect day.

Thank you so much for the great trip, the incredible wedding and the memories that will last a lifetime. We can not wait to come back next year to celebrate our anniversary.

The resort is just lovely with 10 acres to explore. Jim was so gracious to speak about all of their gardens and efforts to control their own use of resources. Robin runs a 1st class facility with a wonderful staff of people to accommodate all of our needs. The food was exceptional - some of the best we have ever had in all of our travels ! The bures were roomy and very comfortable - October is a wonderful time to go - nice cool breezes to fall asleep to at night. The views from the facility are just beautiful.

The dive operation is outstanding. Julie and Aaron (along with boat captain Tiko) run a 1st class operation. The most divers they will accommodate is 8 with the two of them diving with us showing us all the critters. We had a good briefing of the boat, safety and marine life before we left the bay - one of the more detailed we have experienced in the past. They took care of everything including washing all of our gear each and every day and folding it right beside our BC -- we also had wonderful snacks, hot coca and even a hot shower to use after diving . They treated us so well.
We would highly recommend this resort to anyone that may ask and when we left on Sunday we had a tears in our eyes as they sang the Fijian goodbye song

Robin and Jim Kelly are great hosts who have established a wonderfully comfortable, beautiful operation that incorporates most of the key criteria that define sustainable tourism. The large organic garden, the wind generator and solar power panel which supplements a water-powered turbine-generator that supplies 80% of the resort’s electrical requirements. The estate – it really is one –has sweeping green lawns on rolling hills overlooking the sea, dotted with skyward-reaching coconut palms and spreading monkey pod trees. They grow vegetables, fruits and herbs, flowers by the bushel; papayas ripen on trees, bananas flower in the breeze. All is orderly, fruitful and totally relaxing. With all this homegrown produce Robin prepares the most delicious meals.

There are four comfortable bures. We were assigned the Garden Bure that is positioned at what must be the crossroads of the resort. Household staff, estate workers, and guests seemed to be traipsing by our bure at all hours.

Robin and Jim’s daughter, June, and her partner , Aaron, have a scuba diving and snorkeling operation in the surrounding waters, which have a reputation for underwater scenery that matches Taveuni’s grandeur plus tremendous varieties of fish large and small. Unfortunately due to weather conditions, particularly the continual rain during our stay at the hight of the supposed "dry season," we were unable to view these sights above or below the water.

Visitors to Nakia should be aware that there is no beach. The resort is above the shore road and while there are good views of the sea it’s a bit of a walk down to the water. Once there, the sea is very shallow and rocky. There is no beach as such, but there is a nice large pool at the resort.

We spent a week and even married at Nakia. What a wonderful place and an absolutely flawless stay.

Where to start…. There is so much to say about Nakia. I’ll start with the food, absolutely incredible. Every single meal was memorable. The menu has many choices and is not Fijian/ Indian centered. Instead there are numerous choices for all tastes and all meals, which is rare for Fiji. Breakfast may consist of eggs and meat and hash browns. The eggs were always cooked perfectly to order. The hash browns are really good. I don’t know their secret, but they are so good I wanted to mention them. Other items for breakfast include french toast, banana pancakes with maple syrup or homemade passion fruit syrup. Lunch has wonderful selections to include chicken salad or tuna salad in a papaya shell (my wife loved it), soup and salad, hamburgers and many other choices. For the salad I want to share that the salad is incredibly fresh and balanced with many crisp ingredients. Not sure if I have every had a better salad. The produce is grown just 100 feet from the restaurant. I order the chicken soup one afternoon after a morning of diving. It was just something to warm me up a bit. What a surprise, the soup would have made Emeril Lagassee smile. What a surprise to get such a wonderful chicken soup. I ordered it 2 more times before leaving. Fish is not always on the menu for dinner. The owner is very picky about the fish he serves and cooks the fish for the guests. We selected fish for two dinners- simply wonderful. We are not big fish eaters, but the fish was so good. Deserts were home-made and all great. Even the cookies with the afternoon tea were home-made and were different cookies each day, some even drizzled with chocolate. Another thing to mention about the food is that not only are you never disappointed, it is always on time. Nakia does not allow outside diners, and they have the timing down perfect. Always hot, well prepared and you never wait. I don’t know how they do it, but we loved it. We talked about how, when on vacation dining often becomes a time consuming process that can take up a lot of time when one eats 3 meals out per day. At Nakia, no time is wasted waiting to order or waiting for food, the meals are always relaxing, enjoyable and don’t kill your day waiting to be seated or waiting to order or for the food to arrive. Finally, every single table is full waterview. Every table is perfectly located. All we can say is wow!

The bures are spotlessly clean at Nakia. My wife does not like spiders and we never saw a single spider in the bure. Nakia simply cleans what you can see and what you can’t everyday- that is why we think we saw no insects. The bedroom linen was wonderful, I would speculate they use the same supplier that supplies Marriott (they looked and felt the same). The bathroom is spotless and everything is modern and works flawlessly. Note that although the bathrooms are not spa like, they are clean, modern and user friendly. Outside the bures are a covered porch with nice chairs and a table to sit and relax. Steps from the bures are large hammocks that can fit two people being shaded by palm trees. I also want to mention that the time the cleaning of the bure for when you are not at the bure, so you are never disturbed.

We dove for the first (and second and third) times ever at Nakia. Julie and Aaron are expert and professional dive masters. They made my wife and I very comfortable during the instruction and the dive. It was never any work to learn about diving, Aaron has a very special knack for expert instruction without feeling one is at school or being trained. I would recommend at least one dive while at Nakia if you have never dived before, you may never find a better instructor, better equipment or better water anywhere else in the world. Note that all the equipment, from the dive boat to the wet suits are high end and new models.

I can’t even describe how special the staff at Nakia are. You never know they are there except they are always there whenever you want something. Each and every one of them. You always felt wonderful and special when they are around. We were invited to a dance by the staff and their families on a Saturday night, so special we will remember it for life. The staff sang us a goodbye song when we left, my wife and I both cried. I can’t describe the feeling.

We married at Nakia. Exceeded every expectation. We wanted something simple and low key. We went for a three mile early morning walk, then went diving. Returned for a late lunch, then dressed. Nakia built an elegant flower display where we married under a beautiful tree. Nakia arranged EVERYTHING. We would not of changed a thing. Nakia also referred a photographer to us, Penny Dinn. We were very extremely happy with her photography and services.

I forgot to mention how nice the ocean view is from Nakia, how steady the breeze is and that Nakia provides a 2 person kayak and late model Schwinn mountain bikes. All of which we used and enjoyed. The crystal clear freshwater pool is large, and is cleaned by an oxygen process so no chemicals are used. There are very comfortable lounge chairs around the pool. The resort is powered by capturing the wind, sun and volcanic spring water. Electricity is always available 24x7 and no diesel generators making noise or adding smell of fuel. Make sure you take a tour of the organic gardens, you will be amazed. The water is filtered to higher standards than bottled water and no chemicals are added to the garden, so you will always be confident in eating the fresh produce, drinking the water and enjoying drinks with ice.

If you want a very special destination and a flawless stay run by exceptional people, Nakia is the place
