This was our 2nd stay at Nakia and it really was just as wonderful as the first time we visited 18 months ago. We travelled with our two boys aged 9 and 11 and our friends (a couple who stayed in the sunset Bure). The Somosomo bure was just as comfortable as I remember it. The bure contains everything you could need, even solar powered lanterns and 1st aid kits. The beds are all very comfortable with two separate bathrooms. The outdoor shower is just glorious. You can sit on the balcony with 180 degrees views across the rainbow reef, and we would sit of an evening with a G&T in hand and watch the sun set over the sea. The food was outstanding, we managed to try everything in our 11 day stay. They cooked the Trevally our son Jack caught to perfection as well as a lovely lemon cake to celebrate our other son Harrys 12th birthday.

Robin, Jim, Julie and all the wonderful staff looked after us so well – their generosity and kindness made us feel as if we were staying with family. Also their commitment to running Nakia using only sustainable natural energy sources, and organically growing the majority of the produce required for their restaurant is truely commendable!

The diving and snorkelling (which is truely spectacular) are one of the main reasons we travel to Taveuni, but even if you dont do either you could be perfectly content at Nakia sitting by the pool overlooking the Somosomo strait with nothing more to want for.
We all walked the Lavena Coastal walk , something we missed out on last time, and it was a wonderful day. The scenery was spectacular. I would recommend going with a guide (only about $10 for the day!) as they provide alot of information about the plants and local community in the area.

Nakia will always be our very special place. I hope we can return for a third visit sometime very soon!

Nakia exceeded expectations in every respect. Clearly it's been developed with great respect and sensitivity to the local environment and the local people. It provides great comfort and convenience, without much of the over-the-top, energy-hungry and unnecessary bling that you see in most five-star resorts. Great to see the use of solar, wind and hydro to provide the energy, and food mostly grown onsite. The location is amazing and the views and diving are to die for.

On top of all this is the amazing down-to-earth hospitality of the Kelly family and their wonderful staff. They are really making a positive difference in the lives of the local community.

Room Tip: Amazing views from all rooms.

The Kelly family have created a very special boutique holiday resort with their thoughtfulness and care for their guests, their staff and the environment. There are four bures that offer privacy, and a lovely pool within the beautifully managed grounds. Nakia Resort and Dive is located on a small headland above the sea. You can reach the small beaches below the resort and the marina by walking walk down a series of steps and crossing the road.

Our friends ( a couple with two boys (aged 10 & 12) had stayed at Nakia Resort about 18 months ago and encouraged us to return with them. We stayed 11 nights at the end of May 2013 and we enjoyed it all including the hot weather, and occasional rain. We stayed in the Sunset Bure with it its 180 degree views of the sea. Our friends stayed in the lovely Sumosumo Bure. While the adults made the most of the scuba diving, preceded by Julie's excellent dive briefings, we went snorkelling with a guide.

For us the meals were a standout because of the variety (different cuisines - Fijian, Mexican, international) of choice, and consistent quality, attractive presentation, freshness and tastiness. Each breakfast, lunch and dinner, overseen and sometimes prepared by Robin, and served by Nakia's professional and friendly staff, was an event for all of us that never failed to delight and satisfy. The marinated steaks superbly cooked by Jim were exceptional.

Room Tip: The Sunset Bure is very special for couples with its wonderful views of the sea and sunsets from the verandah, and privacy from the restaurant provided by a tall hedge.

Amazing location on a headland of this beautiful garden island, overlooking the ocean. Wonderful service and great food. Cared for resort - picture perfect gardens, bures, pool, etc. Excellent links with a fabulous dive company. Free Wifi at the main building. Family feel. Romantic++! Only thing I would change would be to have a kettle in the room.

We just spent the last week of May and the first week of June here, for a total of 10 nights. The resort is fantastic, and is a great place to rest and also to use as a base for exploring Taveuni above water or scuba diving the Rainbow Reef.

We stayed our first five nights in the Garden Bure, and our last five nights in the Sunset Bure after some other guests departed. Both of these units were clean, quiet, and very comfortable. Both have nice views, but the view from the Sunset Bure is a little nicer because it directly overlooks the Somosomo Strait and, as its name implies, it provides the opportunity to photograph some stunning sunsets from the front porch when the weather's right.

Here are some of Nakia's features that make it such a wonderful place:
1. The owners (Jim and Robin) provide personal service second to none. For example, Robin arranged a hike and oyster farm snorkeling tour for us on the backside of Taveuni for the next day. When the next morning arrived, Robin told us that she had just received a phone call from the oyster farm owner, who recommended that we cancel the trip due to bad weather. He was right, because that morning was the start of a five-day tropical storm with winds exceeding 70 mph at times. Robin's friendship with the oyster farm owner, and his willingness to act on our behalf, saved us the time and expense of the wasted excursion.

2. The food is great. They grow many of their own fruits and vegetables and make virtually everything from scratch. The fish, chicken, and beef dishes were all outstanding. We especially enjoyed the fish and chips (wonderful batter around exquisite "walu" -- spanish mackerel), papaya filled with tuna or chicken salad, cold fruit smoothies on hot days, and a variety of tasty curries. We shared a single meal plan, and still ate too much -- it was that good!

3. We enjoyed getting to know all of the staff on a first-name basis, learning about their families, laughing with them, and quickly counting them as friends. They were gracious and welcoming beyond our expectations.

4. Due to the storm, we spent more days scuba diving and less time hiking than we had originally planned. But the diving was fantastic, and the service we received from the dive shop (Taveuni Ocean Sports) was outstanding. Julie, the dive shop owner and daughter of Jim and Robin, has done a great job training local dive masters and boat captains, who (along with Julie) gave excellent fish briefings and boat safety briefings for all new customers. Julie and her staff took care of our gear throughout our stay, cleaning it after each day of diving, and setting it up on new tanks for each subsequent day. They understand the timing of the tides and currents, and they carefully check each dive site before asking the divers to enter the water, in order to make sure conditions are excellent for the dive. We were not disappointed, as we had opportunities to explore cracks and crannies for critters during low current conditions, and also opportunities to fly over the reef during fast current conditions when the colors of the fish and soft corals were breathtaking. At the end of several of these dives, I felt like I had just finished riding on a Disneyland thrill ride -- I immediately wanted to go back to the beginning and take the ride again.

5. The swimming pool is large, clean, and a great place to relax anytime during the day or after a dive.

6. We enjoyed the view from the sheltered restaurant's deck while checking email using the resort's complimentary Wifi service, which worked very well.

7. The longer we stayed, the less we wanted to leave. When our departure day arrived, the entire staff bid us farewell by singing a beautiful goodbye song, bringing tears to our eyes. We were saying goodbye to very special friends!
