We have experienced impeccable service and spectacular scenery at many top resorts and lodges around the world, but we have NEVER received the level of genuine kindness and sincerity we received at this resort and the experience was the highlight of our trip to Fiji.

That intangible quality is hard to explain. Certainly nothing was too much to ask, but it was the accompanying generous attitude and earnest desire to respond personally that was amazing, much like one wants to please and take care of friends and family. We would have missed the most valuable lessons that Fiji has to offer if we had not left the tourist areas near Viti Levu and come to Taveuni and stayed at this resort.

The resort's tropical garden are full of colorful flowers. The grounds and public buildings are immaculate and in good working order, as was our bure. The walls of glass in the bedroom and living room opened up completely to the outdoor lanai so we could enjoy true indoor-outdoor living. Placement of doors and windows ensure cooling breezes through the bure during the day. At night, we closed the doors and turned on the bedroom a/c, allowing us to get a good night's sleep. The layout of the bure is both glamorous and efficient: every little detail has been thought of. Fresh tropical flowers were placed everywhere.

Although Matei is still without state-run electricity, the resort's generator runs 24 hours/day. Wifi is sufficient to handle basic e-mail and web sites, but don't expect to stream video. The resort has access to spring water, so water from the tap is potable.

We were assigned to the bure named "Seni Bitu". It sits slightly farther out towards the ocean than the other units and has the best, most spectacular view of any bure. The tradeoff is that it requires the longest walk to and from the restaurant or when you want to leave the premises. You may be carefully watched as you walk to and from your bure by many, many large frogs that dot the lawn of the resort after it rains.

The food served at the resort is carefully prepared, served, and of high quality much like you would find in a good restaurant. I am assuming it caters to Australian and New Zealand visitors, but we found the flavors too bland and needing more zip. The view from the restaurant is spectacular, overlooking the Somosomo strait and framed with the resort's pool, gardens and butterflies. The resident Doberman dogs and two charismatic cats visited us during our meals when we called them over, providing pet-petting therapy to help us further relax. If you need more animals, the owners also have two parrots in an aviary you can visit. All the animals are very respectful and well-behaved.

The cost of having spectacular views is that it is a (very) short hike down the hill to the resort's beach. While snorkeling is possible here, if you are not doing serious diving during your stay have the resort take you to Honeymooner's Island, a brief boat trip away and totally worth snorkeling for an intro to the multi-colored soft coral gardens and "Nemo" clownfish to get just a glimpse into why this area of the world is so famous for diving. The currents here were a bit strong for me, but not dangerous.

I'm sure it took the entire resort working together to ensure our seamless experience, but a special call-out to our guide Percy who accompanied us on most of our island and ocean travels and to our head housekeeper Bale...two quality human beings we were especially honored to get to know during our brief visit.

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: The bure named "Seni Bitu" has the best view, but is farthest away from the central building and restaurant

My daughter (age 21) and I spent 8 nights at Taveuni Island Resort in late September, 2017.It's a 5 minute trip from the airport. We enjoyed every minute of our time spent there and on the island, through 26 - 28 degree days and just one full day of torrential downpour. Otherwise, very light showers came and went within minutes, not disrupting our plans at all. The Fijians here were all happy, smiling and accommodating - very humble, beautiful people. The interior of the island is lush, green, low jungle vegetation. We experienced it via walking, taking the Lavena Coastal Walk (Do it!), and horse riding. We took a snorkelling trip to Rainbow Reef (worth it) and a snorkelling trip to Honeymoon Island, so we also captured much of the off-island views and this helped us to orient ourselves better. We also took a ride to the International Dateline sign. All of these reported trips by me can be found on separate sites on TripAdvisor.

We were fortunate to stay in the Lomalagi Bure with its widespread porch overlooking 180 degree views of the Somasoma Straits, across to the distant mountains and shores of Fiji's second largest island. The manicured and colourful gardens and lawns at our doorstep and beyond were a lovely sight each moment we sat there, by a hammock swing, at the outdoor setting or on lounge chairs. Perfect. Very, very private. And so close to the restaurant, office and amenities. The honeymoon suite (Veidomoni) was perched at the edge of the cliff - magnificent views and extremely private. All other bures were a little more set back, but all with views.

The private beach was large for the island, but very small by my previous island experiences. Snorkeling offshore was fine, but not inspirational. Trips to the reef are for serious snorkelers. Last year, a cyclone destroyed many parts of the reef, but locals are well aware of where to take you, to enjoy what is left. It takes 3 years, apparently, for regrowth in those affected areas.

Full day excursions taken were accompanied by a picnic hamper of mixed sandwiches or chicken salad, provided by the resort. Nice. I loved the way that we could rock up at breakfast (fresh fruits, muffins, toasts, cooked eggs etc) to nominate our lunch and dinner options (choice of two each time) and book in our excursions, after seeing what the weather was like. Great, peaceful, scenic view from the meals area, and gorgeous waiters/waitresses. Drinks are pricey, of course, so BYO as much as possible! I brought one bottle of wine, but should have brought more. There's a convenience store near the airport which we stopped by enroute to an excursion, where wine can be purchased much cheaper. Lovely meals. I ate WAY too much!

Do and her husband Ric (Kiwis) - owners - were laid back, very chatty and forthcoming, and generous in their assistance. There are 2 cats, 2 doberman dogs and 2 parrots on the premises, which my daughter loved. Do and Ric filled us in on the interesting history of their adventure in setting up the resort.

8 nights may have been one night too many, but we didn't regret it! We loved our time spent there.

Free WiFi! (a bit up and down, but mostly up)

Room Tip: Go for Lomalagi bure, if you can get it

We could not have asked for (or even imagined) a more incredible experience. The views from our room, the pool, the restaurant... all unbelievably beautiful. Not to mention the wonderful staff and food!!! Is it possible to give 10 out of 5 stars???

My wife and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary at this lovely destination. Being small and for couples only were key draw cards

We stayed in an Ocean View Bure called Balabala. It overlooks a small beach. It's very private- we couldn't see any other bures. The Bure is luxurious and spacious. The front covered balcony has two day beds. Perfect for reading, snoozing or just staring at the crystal clear ocean.

The King Size bed was very comfortable and had an insect net. The Bure has an indoor and outdoor shower. Unfortunately, the hot water supply to the shower was very unreliable. We reported it but it never worked properly during our stay

It's nice to have all meals provided. Lots of fresh produce was used. Breakfast was our favourite meal especially the wonderful platter of fresh fruit every morning. The view from the restaurant deck is stunning. We thought the lunch and dinners were decent although they weren't 5 star dining.

The staff are lovely and so helpful. We did a couple of excursions. One was the Lavena Coastal Walk and Falls. Fantastic!! Also did the Vidawa Forest Trail. This is a terrific cultural experience

The owners are selling after 43 years. I wish them well in the next part of their life adventure. It was great to share their little piece of paradise for a few days.

It is a delightful resort with huge rooms with beautiful views over Somosomo Strait. The staff remembered your name and it was small enough to easily mix with your fellow guests. Rick and Do were wonderful hosts and often joined the guests. We are not snorklers but our fellow guests said it was great . We did local tours but most of all totally relaxed
