“Taveuni Terrific”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2013

Our stay at Taveuni was exceptional. Quality accommodation, superb meals and memorable trips to the waterfalls and local reefs for snorkelling. The dining room overlooks the ocean and provided magnificent views of each nights sunset. We enjoyed our nightly walks away from the resort which offered a mix of views of the ocean, local farms and jungle greenery. The quiet, laid back lifestyle of the resort and island makes it easy to relax and unwind and enjoy each other's company. The 5 star furnishings and linen in the bure's were matched by the outdoor recliners and air-chair on your private verandah. Highly recommended

I stayed at the TIR for 8 nights with a friend and we both enjoyed it very much. The staff is very friendly and you are taken care each day for trips you could do.
With Dorothy, Ric and Matt you feel very welcome like friends.
To get out of the everyday`s life its a great place. Quiet and calm, but you can also come to know the island and the people on the beautiful trips. The bures are great and you can really feel well there. We also took the advantage to get some great massages.
This is a great place to recover, so I can recommend the resort also to share a good time with friends not only for honeymoon...

we stayed at Lomalagi villa for a week in August and had a wonderful time. There is construction as other reviewers have noted but we were on the other side of the property so didn't hear it. It was relaxing and the staff is friendly. Food is excellent. We enjoyed the company of the owner's two dogs immensely! Go see the waterfalls and the the little villages and make sure you get a massage. The little beach you can climb down to near Lomalagi is beautiful. It's a private lagoon in the mornings. I'd go back as soon as I could! Vinaka!

We recently spent five nights at the TIR.
Location: The resort is set high above the water meaning there are spectacular views of the ocean. The views from the restaurant and bar are breathtaking.
The main beach is mainly used as an area to launch boats and kayaks and some buildings are being constructed directly behind the beach which was rather noisy and could also be heard at the resort. The second beach is accessible by walking down some steep steps. It is a small beach and not well maintained as we found broken glass and no lounges or seating is provided. Snorkeling from both these beaches is not recommended as the coral has been damaged, it is generally too shallow and there are hardly any fish.
The gardens are beautifully maintained unfortunately there are two dogs at the resort who also often use the grass. This means you need to watch where you walk when returning to your villa at night. There is an infinity pool on the property with a few lounges around it. One of the two dogs liked to swim in it every morning.

Villa: We stayed in the Nuisawa villa. It was a nice sized room and it was clean. It is an ocean view villa but there is a large fern directly in front of the villa blocking most of the view. I presume this has been put there to provide some privacy as the pool is in front of the villa. The villa is also next to the restaurant. Our air conditioner broke, which we reported to the reception in the morning. When we returned after lunch it still had not been repaired but we told the cleaning staff and it was promptly repaired.

Food: The food was very good. Fresh and simply prepared. There was a starter which was usually a soup or a salad. Main course usually consisted of a choice of either fish or meat, followed by a dessert.

Activities: Guided snorkeling was a disappointment. Very few fish and the coral wasn't what we had expected either. We frequently holiday in the Maldives and snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef so perhaps our expectations were too high.
Fishing: Three of our party did this. They left an hour late due to a problem with a boat. There was no sunshade on the boat and considering it costs $1,500 for four hours they were disappointed in the overall service. They did manage to catch two fish.
Island picnic /BBQ: This is a small island about a twenty minute boat ride from the resort. The beach was small and considering they take groups here all the time it was disappointing to see that no effort had been made to clean the beach up and make it more comfortable. There were only a few rocks to sit on and the snorkeling off the island was ok. I do want to point out that we did not expect a perfectly swept beach with sun lounges but a few chairs and umbrellas would have made it more comfortable and would have been easy to provide.
Excursion to waterfall: The waterfall is about an hour from the resort. Transport is in a small van. Our driver was very friendly and often stopped to tell us about the area. The journey takes you through some beautiful villages and we found it very interesting. The waterfall is only a ten minute walk from the car park and is well worth seeing. I thoroughly recommend swimming there as the water is very refreshing. We did not continue on to the other two waterfalls as we were told by other guests that it wasn't worth it.
The excursions and activities are over priced

Service: Fijians are truly wonderful people and we felt the staff did its best to provide us with everything we needed. Unfortunately we felt the service was not up to the standard of a small luxury resort most probably due to a lack of training which we saw as a failing on the part of management. This was disappointing considering the staff seemed so eager to please, but unfortunately even having the best people without professional and constant training you can't achieve/keep the service at the level needed for a small luxury resort.
Wi-fi is available at the reception but we were not able to get it in our villa. A comment by the management in a previous report said it was because they are a remote island in the pacific. It did make me wonder how we were able to get perfect wi-fi connection on tiny islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean or in a remote forest in South America and yet not here...

In conclusion we feel with more attention to detail, better management and care the TIR has the potential of being a beautiful five star resort.
A note to management after reading your long replies. Don't waste your time and energy trying to prove you are always right. Use the observations in the reviews to improve your resort.

Just back from a great break in Fiji staying at Taveuni Island Resort. We (middle aged couple with a 15 year old son) spent 16 nights in the Oceanfront Bure, Veidomoni. It has two separate living / sleeping areas and a long patio right on the bluff overlooking Somosomo Strait which is totally private. So private that we only ever used the outdoor shower facing the strait, and what a view!
The hosts (Ric, Do and Matt) are what make the experience so enjoyable. Nothing is too much trouble. Then there is the staff, many are working in the background and rarely seen. Come back from dinner and the beds are turned down, shutters closed and towels replaced. The ones that you see regularly know you by name and do anything for you. Hats off to Sai (what a guide), Asleka working tirelessly in the restaurant breakfast, lunch and dinner and Raymond busy behind the bar. Then there’s the local musicians who play in the background and will readily share their kava and have a chat.
The meals are fantastic with a local inspired menu that changes daily and can cater for special requests.
All said, highly recommend!!

I always stop at Taveuni Island Resort on my travels through Taveuni. The views, the Michellin quality food, and the rooms were amazing as always. This resort has one of the best bures I have seen in island resorts in Fiji. The outdoor showers, the views from the rooms (and the showers), and the food always bring me back there. Excellent place to chill or enjoy water sports or base yourself (if you are planning on visiting attractions like the Bouma waterfalls).

My wife and I recently stayed at TIR for 10 nights and had a great time. Here's the rundown:

Getting There: We took the direct flight from Nadi and it wasn't too bad, just a little bumpy on take off and landing. Once on Taveuni, one of the resort staff will meet you at the airstrip (calling it an airport would be very generous) and take you to the resort, which is all of 5 minutes down the road.

TIR: The resort is off the main road of Taveuni and the staff is very welcoming. Upon arrival we were serenaded with a welcome song and given fresh juice. The check-in process was a breeze. The grounds are impeccably maintained with windy grass paths, natural vegetation hedges, and water fountains. The whole resort is on a cliff above the reef and has a boutique feel. The infinity pool views are great and the pool is nice. The beach was fine, but it's really a functional beach used as a launching point for snorkel trips and kayaking. Like some other reviewers mentioned, the reef directly in front of the resort isn't great for snorkeling, but there are a ton of snorkeling spots a quick boat ride or short kayak from the resort. Wifi is available (for purchase) and worked fine on the patio, but not great in the bure. Staff at the resort is great, since the resort only has 12 bures you are guaranteed to get to know everybody.

Bures: We were escorted to our Bure, which I would call spacious and modern. The bure we stayed in (Mokosoi) faced the sunset and overlooked the reef/water. I'm slightly biased, but I think our bure, the 2br bure, and the ones on either side of our bure are the best on the property. It seemed quieter on the North side of the property. The rooms have sliding glass doors that fully open to the water and the view is spectacular. The air conditioner works great, bathroom has double sinks and is huge. Loved the out door shower, it overlooks the water and it made the bure just a little bit better. The bures have all the essentials for a standard upper tier hotel/resort (i.e., safe, mini bar frig, umbrella, robes, soft towels, beach towels, etc).

Food: I would second the description of the food (from Rajay's review) as tasty and fresh. Everything we had was good, and all the ingredients seemed to come from the island. The view from the bar/restaurant is also very beautiful, so every night is a romantic dinner. Example of breakfast for the meal plan is a fresh fruit plate, tea/coffee/juice, fresh baked muffins, local jam, corn flakes, granola, and choice of hot breakfast (i.e., eggs, bacon, ham, pancakes, french toast). Lunch and Dinner were 3 courses, with 2 options to choose from for main dish. I also noticed that they catered to nationality with food and were very accommodating with food requests. The presentation was nice and the portions were good. The resort is also very good about packing lunches for you when you go out on excursions.

Spa: Acceptable, it's 2 larger bures with a "cool" pool between them. My wife and I got massages, which were very good and nice after the long flight from the US. The Spa has all the standard treatments, but I think it's there more so because the resort would be lacking without it.

Overall Impression: My wife and I were looking for a relaxing and quiet vacation, and we totally got it. We felt like it was a big gamble when there are so many Islands to pick from in Fiji. After reading endless TripAdvisor reviews, we said lets go for it. Our original concerns were the following:

Booking: Why don't they use booking sites, why is it some weird U.S. travel agent?
Response: After contacting the resort because I was skeptical of just giving my credit card information to some random hotline, I was given some comfort. They are a small family run resort and totally make due with the outsourcing booking company in the U.S. (it's call We Are You, LLC). All was legit with the LA based booking company and our reservation was fine when we arrived.

Airport: It's really close the airport, will it be noisy?
Response: The question in itself is an indication of where you are from. Meaning, airport in my mind means lots of noisy planes. In Fiji, it's how you get to the island and how you leave. Noise is not an issue when there are only 4 planes coming and going a day. I laugh now even thinking it was a concern. Can't take the city out of the city boy...

Weather: Taveuni is called the Garden Island, does it mean it rains alot?
Response: It could....of the 10 days we were there it rained or was partially cloudy for 2-3 days. I would say most days it was partially sunny (and hot). We had 2 days of lots of sun, but found that it always rained a little bit regardless. It rained both days we were on the east side doing hikes (but mostly just drizzle and you swim on the hikes). This was weather for September. We were told that October its about the same, but Nov-Feb they get the rain. The west side of the island is supposed to be "dry", and it seemed like the north end of the island where the resort is didn't get as much of the rain because the middle section of Taveuni has the moutains which draw the clouds. Weather reports don't exist here. When we asked, the response was "Could rain tomorrow, or maybe we get some sun, lets see when we get up". That statement about the weather is a little bit of how things work on Taveuni in my opinion.

Food: Is it really good, or are we going to be disappointed?
Response: We were worried about a repeat menu staying 10 nights, but we only had 2 repeat appetizers during the whole stay (they have 5-7 rotating chefs). Some of the other guests who did multi-island stays said that the food at TIR was by far the best. The meals are more local inspired, lots of fresh fish, some pork, beef, prawns, plenty of good stuff. All the meals were interesting and we weren't disappointed. If you didn't feel like either main choice, like I don't want to leave the resort 10lbs heavier, can I just get a salad, they were totally accommodating.

Beach: Is the beach good, it looks small...
Response. It seemed like Taveuni as a whole didn't have a ton of "sit and sun" beaches. If beach is high up on the list of needs, I would be hard pressed to say the beach here is great. The tides in Fiji seem to affect beach size, meaning at high tide there isn't a beach and at low you can walk to beaches that were submerged hours ago. I would counter that lack of beach is made up by the private patio of each bure and the pool area. We had plenty of sit and read time and didn't use the beach here for any of it. Also, I would reiterate some reviews that the path to the beach is steep. It's not horrendous, but it's no leisurely stroll either.

BIG thanks to all at the resort for making our stay wonderful. We look forward to coming back!

Room Tip: - In Fiji, you need to run on Fiji time. As Type A people, it took us a day or two to dial down...
