“A Real Live Mermaid!!”
Reviewed August 10, 2012

We recently spent 3 weeks on the island of Taveuni, unfortunately we left the diving for the last week. We managed to squeeze in a few great dives but wished we had begun earlier. The whole Taveuni Ocean Sports team was very professional with excellent training and equipment! The dive briefings and explanations really helped us understand the currents and tides in that area. Special thanks to Asliin(sp.?), Becky, and Sam who really went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and confident. Extra special thanks to Julie who was incredible!! We also enjoyed her fish and coral orientation photos. She was very inspiring, made our trip unforgettable and looked so comfortable underwater that we think she must be part mermaid!! Looking forward to returning again! (Tracy W)

“Amazing Diving from a Top-Notch Operator”
Reviewed July 13, 2012

Taveuni Ocean Sports is the dive shop located across from Nakia Resort, about 10-15 minutes south of the island's airport in Matei. It is owned and operated by Julie Kelly, daughter of the owners of the Nakia resort.

My wife and I dove with TOS for eight days in late June/early July and absolutely loved it. Not only was the diving spectacular, Julie and her staff made us feel welcome and comfortable the entire time. Her knowledge of the sea life, and more importantly, the prevailing currents at the Rainbow Reef was amazing. On our first day there, Julie gave us a 30-45 minute introduction to the types of coral and fish life that we would see during the week. She also went into some of the habits of certain fish and the relationships that fish have with other fish at the reef.

Due to TOS' proximity to the Somosomo Straits and Rainbow Reef, all diving is done there, and that is a good thing. The reef is extremely healthy, wildly colorful, and teeming with fish Iife in many locations. Most of the dive sites are 20-30 minutes by boat, giving ample time to gear up and
chat with the dive masters, but certainly not too long of a trip. All dives were preceded by a briefing of the dive, complete with a drawing on the boat's whiteboard. Dive groups were never larger than four divers, and the dive boat never had more than eight divers on any one trip. Very personal, and I never had the "cattle boat" feeling experienced at other dive operations. During the surface interval after the first dive, we were treated to delicious baked snacks like banana bread, brownies and carrot cake. Iced tea, hot tea and water were provided for hydration. Local fruits such as banana and papaya were also on board.

TOS' boats were new and well-equipped. Dives were made via giant stride off of their main boat, and via back roll off of their auxiliary boat. We brought along our own gear; however I visually inspected the rental gear used by fellow divers on the boat and it appeared to be in great condition. I wouldn't hesitate to leave our gear at home in the event of a repeat trip.

Dives were about 35-50 minutes, depending on air consumption. Depending on current at the end of each dive, we either performed a safety stop under the boat, or a drift safety stop with boat pick-up at our surface point. All DMs had safety sausages to mark surfacing location.

My personal favorite sites were Fish Factory, Great White Wall, and Barracuda Point, but there were no bad dives.

Can't say enough about Julie and her DM staff. They assembled our gear every morning, switched tanks between dives, and rinsed the gear each afternoon to prepare it for the next day. They also remembered which fins and wet suits went with each BCD, and the weights for each diver. As we are not very accustomed to current, they made us feel comfortable and reinforce that safety was their first priority. Julie used her knowledge of the reef's ever-changing currents and tides to select the safest dives at any particular time. This is not to say that there was never any current, but it was managed very well by the staff and crew. Our personal favorites were Thomas, with his contagious laugh and prankster nature, and Ronnie, the capable captain. On 2 occasions I had issues with my gear: First my air-integrated computer died and the staff swapped out the hose and computer with one from the shop. Second, one of my fins lost a small pin in the buckle assemble, and Thomas expertly found another and fixed the fin after we were done diving for the day.

Thanks Julie to you and the rest of the TOS crew for a memorable week of diving. You all will be missed!

“Simply the best”
Reviewed June 29, 2012

From beginner to experienced divers, these guys are awesome. Julie gave the best dive briefing I've had, so we know what to expect to see and experience. They know the best sights and the perfect time to be there to suit the conditions. The dive masters, skippers and the entire crew are awesome. We did 5 days with these guys and wished we had longer to see more of the amazingly healthy reef and abundant fish and coral. Professional, safe, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, thorough and happy, are just a few of the words we would use to describe Taveuni Ocean Sports.
We would highly recommend you choose these guys if going diving on Taveuni. We will be back.

“Great White Wall - Single Best Dive Ever”
Reviewed June 5, 2012

Julie and her team are incredible. Julie's unique mix of professional conservatism with her desire to ensure every dive is a great dive makes TOS the best diver operator we have come across (through Australia, Thailand, PNG and Fiji). The pre-dive briefing, the boats, the equipment, the expertise of the Captains, the dive masters, the Nakia provided food treats and Julie herself made for the most enjoyable diving. We booked for 2 days diving - managed to be in the window for and incredible Great White Wall dive - which really couldn't be surpassed! - Grabbed a third day and would have gone a fourth if it hadn't been booked out. Julie runs a quality over quantity operation and it shows ... small groups, focus on right sites for the conditions, a joy at sharing the unique to Fiji and indeed Taveuni wildlife that occurs at the sites and enough time to really explore. Julie would be the best instructor we could ever hope to find to introduce our precious daughters in the joys of diving, perhaps the ultimate compliment we can pay her! We can't wait to be back!
