“Old Egypt”
Review of Old Market

Reviewed January 20, 2013

This was a brilliant trip, which I was dreading, purely because of the many warnings about being hassled, being a young British girl with fair hair would be a nightmare apparently! We arrived just after 8pm, the guide showed us around the loop of the old Market, then we were left for two hours to explore. If you stick together, keep walking, act friendly and polite, a simple no thankyou, will you keep you above the hagglers and "no bloody hassle". It is dirty, with cats, camels and old ruins of a mosque, really shows Egypt, the oldest market in Sharm, Selling some cheesy souvenirs, but also some of the stalls and shops selling beautiful Sheesh pipes, murals and Egyptian stools, I certainly became very confident and haggled for some brilliant bargains. A well spent trip.

We travelled to the old market from naama bay and found it to be very dirty, not just dusty but rubbish in the street everywhere. I had been in Egypt for nearly 2 weeks before without any insect bites I came back from the old Market with bites all over my legs! The shops all sold the same goods as Naama bay and without any difference in price. I wouldn't go out of my way again to go to the old Market.

Even though it can be a little intimidating as there are litteraly no women out at night in the market, the men do love a good haggle. When you are looking at buying something, ask for a price, then half it. You can haggle from there. Don't be put off by there pleas that you are breaking their heart, its all part of the sales pitch. Also, the taxi drivers can be very pushy. Never promise them you will take their cab or they will follow you. Get a price from the hotel before you leave and when you do get a taxi - tell them that price and no more. The blue and white cabs are apparently the safest.
