What a fantastic holiday we have just had!!! This is our 5th time in Egypt. I was a little apprehensive about booking a new hotel but I decided to research the company behind this hotel and was comforted by what I read. We were greeted with a drink and sat down to check in. Mohamed Nagdat the concierge came back to show us our room and I explained what we needed to make our holiday special i.e. a room close to all amenities because we had our three and a half year old boy with us. A separate bed for him, a large room to accommodate luggage without tripping over. He came back after 5 minutes and said it was all done, at no extra charge! He drove us to the room and gave us a tour on the way. Once in the room we were not disappointed - it was a very big room, two double beds, balcony, loads of room with a table and chairs and a full size sofa!
The quality of the fittings and materials in the room are of a very high standard but unfortunately, the finishing is a let down. This seems to be a common problem with Egyptian workmanship. The general feel and layout of the hotel is great. The lobby and terrace area is spacious and a good area to congregate after evening dinner. The midnight/churchill bar and Mayfair tea rooms are a fantastic touch befitting a five star hotel. The amphitheatre is set out to the front of the hotel which ensures that you are not hounded by loud music.
The main buffet restaurant has a good choice of food and we can report any tummy troubles. It is not the biggest choice we have seen but is perfectly adequate. The service here was hit and miss but after our first day when we got to know the extremely hard working waiting staff, we were able to tell them not to take our plates too early. They are definitely experiencing teething problems and the staff are learning quickly with how to deal with service. We had an issue with the egg station chef who was quite frankly miserable - a word with Sayed and the chef's attitude was far improved for the rest of our stay. My biggest advice is - communicate with the staff and management here, do not pent up any frustration but tell the waiters if you are not happy or tell management of any issues. They have to resolve them immediately and remember the Egyptian way is different to the British way - be forth right and demand what you need when you are in the right.
We only used the Indian al carte restaurant which we have to say was a delight. The chef Praveen came to speak to us for our feedback and as we said to him, the flavours were aromatic, food not overly spicy and genuinely tasty. It is more akin to an upmarket Indian restaurant rather than the local Balti house!
The accommodation blocks are laid out in rows angled to face the sea and a pool and all have names taken after flowers. There are high quality rattan type loungers laid around the pools and even on top of room blocks (clever touch) so you can either lounge in privacy or around a pool where it is livelier. We stayed around the pool which was great as we spoke with other guests and the animation team. The pool bar was busy and service for food was slow. We just ordered alot earlier to fix this!
The beach does is a good walk down some terraces where blocks are being finished off. There is no construction noise, just internal room work so no bother on that front. The pergola beach restaurant is a good touch and serves a good menu of snacks. As for the beach itself, you can walk straight into the sea but you hit coral quite soon so best to use the jetty’s. There is a good deal of space on this beach and compared to some hotels, is very accessible. The sand is the usual gritty sand as opposed to fine sand. The snorkelling is excellent as the jetty is built over the reef, therefore, you see the fish without having to swim out. There were loungers laid out and four poster bed type booths which were excellent. The towel guys cannot do enough and are very adept at learning your behaviour and anticipating which lounger you will use!
The animation team are great fun, they kept us entertained without being in your face. As for the DJ, DJ Twist is a maestro, he is the resident DJ at the Pasha nightclub so we were very lucky to have him entertain us poolside, amphitheatre and disco. He has a great catalogue of music and is upto date.
The last few days of our stay saw an influx of Egyptian guests and the hotel felt full. We initially thought that this will be problematic and whilst the restaurants were “tested” management quickly adapted and opened up more restaurants and gave us all free wifi anywhere in the hotel! The Egyptian guest were also great fun, they seemed to just enjoy themselves like everybody else.
We must give a big thanks to all the staff here but specifically to Sayed who is the front office manager, Mohammed Nagdat the concierge, Mustafa and Farag in the restaurant. A Rauf at the pool bar and churchills bar. Amy, Nani, Katia, Masha, Socar from animation and most definitely DJ Twist who played just the right kind of music at the right times!
For us, this was a great holiday and this hotel is destined to be a big hit.
Our biggest tip is to communicate with the staff, management and other guests. If there is a problem or gripe, speak to them, it worked for us.
