“back in love with egypt”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013

Three years ago we visited a supposedly premier hotel in marsa alam which was absoluteley dreadful and were put off ever returning to Egypt even though we had previously loved it.Coming to the tropicana restored my love of Egypt, Don,t be put off by the thomson downgrading, this hotel has so much to offer.Yes it is a bit tired and scruffy and there are definiteley way too many loud , rude and irritating Russians, they come over in jumbo jets and apparentlly have thier own terminal to allow mass invasion, but there is so much going for this hotel which makes up for this. The hotel is definately overdue renovations but as this would mean higher prices grab it quick now if you can get it for a good price,we paid 1400 plus extra for seats and more luggage, for 2 for two weeks. but bear mind that you can eat and drink 24 hrs if you wished,i didn,t but did stay chattjng till 1am afew times. They leave water in your room on arrival, but its not a problem as you can pick up as many little bottes at the lobby bar or buffet restaurant as you like.We ate in the buffets for lunch and breakfast onlly, the food is good with plenty to choose from, but it is so huge and the russians so loud with no manners. Lukilly you don,t have to.It is well worth queing to book the A La Cartes. We ate in the buffet for the first night only then in the lovely acs for the other 13 nights ,they are waiter service, with a small selection to choose from, and drinks included. The lobby bar does a good range of coffees and hot chocolate, cocktails if you want them, the brandy ,vodka and rum are drinkable, not so the gin or whiskey, and the wine is only drinkable with soda added, but for A I and what you pay its good value. The entertainment staff were all very friendly even if you didn,t join in,we like to eat late on holiday so didn,t bother with the shows.Special mention to alex and ricky ,and the young english girl who even though we did,t do spa was always friendly and chatted. The staff are all so friendly even without forever tipping them. The hotel is opposite a strip of shops ,chemist.s bars etc.I got some great converse pumps.not, real, but look great and only 8 pound.,and had agreat vanilla skinny latte at the starbucks. IN CONCLUSION ,if you want posh, pay more and go somewhere else, but if you want a good standard cheap break in awarm country, not too far to travel, with lots to do and see, reasonable food with plenty of choice and venues and friendly helpful staff, then you won,t be disappointed. It would of course be better if the hotel controlled the ratio of nationalities better as i,m afraid the overwhelming ammount of russians could put a lot of western europeans off and i feel that this could become a big problem in future if it is not addressed soon. The management also need to replace the tatty balcony furniture as small things can make a big diference to the overall impressin,we had a room in new block near reception with plastic balcony furniture and we loved it.Also, you need a high floor for privacy.

Chose the hotel after reading reviews on tripadvisor and found the middle ground on the remarks there. The hotel is constantly growing it seems and we were in one of the new blocks and therefore found our rooms to be comfortable clean and free from damage/wear and tear. Also noted comments and complaints about Russians - yes, some do push in when there is a queue, but other nationals do that too. It really depends on the people who are staying at the time of your visit. There was a group on our flight that I hoped weren't staying at our hotel and wonder what other nationals will write about those Brits! The hotel is well kept, very clean and all staff we met were very friendly. There are some signs of age in certain places, but on the whole very well maintained. The food was good with a wide range of dishes to choose from every meal time. Only restaurant we were disappointed with was the Mediterranean, which we had high hopes of. The Chinese was the best! Had a lovely meal at the British Night put on specially for us (not fish and chips) but that was cancelled due to lack of attendance - shame. Went to Luxor and thoroughly enjoyed that. Starlight experience was also a good trip but not too sure about VIP boat trip. Just took us to reefs off hotel beaches - might be better to go on Red Sea Cruise (how bad can children be) and go to Ras Mohamed. We asked if we could snorkel away from the group as long as we were back at the boat in time as there are too many people on top of eachother otherwise. Both trips you have to hire snorkelling equipment so be aware of extra costs. No alcohol served either. The best snorkelling was off the pier at the hotel. It is a long trek but worth it. We spend 45mins each time we went - saw more variety than on the boat trip too.

The only thing that marred our holiday was the final experience of the porter trying to rip us off with a roll of £1 coins he claimed to be £20 when it was only £18 - so be warned! Not a remark about the place - people like him are all over.

Would definitely recommend this hotel and would go back again.

One of the things I hated about this hotel , was they let people smoke inside the reception area , it always stunk of fags it was like walking though one big ashtray with the smell . Not enough seating in that area , everyone seem to congregate to that area. Entertainment was none existent, if there was any it was all outside when it was quite cool outside at night this was. Rooms ok make sure you don't have a room next to the laundry . Compressors make aloud noise every few minutes for about 30 seconds at a time ,this is 24/7 if you are a light sleeper it will keep you awake .

Our stay was excellent. The staff were very friendly and efficient and for £1 which we didn't grudge they were even better. Although most of the food wasn't to our taste we certainly didn't go hungry ! The lunchtime snacks were very good, especially the egg sandwiches. The people we would give a special mention to were Mohamed our cleaner rooms 21129/30. Timothy (animation). Waiter (cheeky monkey) and restaurant manager

Stayed at this hotel 8th Feb-19th Feb 2013. 1st time in this hotel and I would definitely recommend it! Quite concerned when I read some reviews before we went but it was fantastic! Best food ive had in Egypt! We have been to Sharm 10 times now and this was the best hotel we have stayed in in Egypt. The restaurants were excellent! The chinese and italians were especially good! We went to theThomson buffet night twice but unfortunately those nights have been cancelled now. It is a real shame as the food was really good! Even the main buffet restaurant served good food! I usually struggle with the food in Egypt and tend to pay for al a cart restaurants but all the al a cart restaurants were free in this hotel. My only concern was a lack of seating in the main reception/bar area. We always managed to find a seat but that was down to our excellent barman Hamdy who looked after us very well! Wifi not that good but we managed. Will go back at the 1st opportunity!

This has to be the best All Inclusive I have ever been to. The staff were excellent and could not do enought for you. I would go to the Beech and the staff would have a lounger and towel ready for me, the bar would bring dinks over without me having to ask (I found this at all 7 bars) the food was amazing. The only downside to this holiday was it went dark at 5.30pm and the evening entertainment was a bit limited. There is Two English bars very close by and a taxi to Soho square shopping mall is only £15 return. Remember when in Egypt and you are shopping, what ever price they say dont pay them more than 50%, they will still be making a nice profit.

Room Tip: Superior rooms are qood value

We stayed here last week (Feb 2013) for part of our honeymoon and had a lovely time. It's an Egyptian 5 star, which is like a 4 star in most countries, but we knew this before we went, and for the price we paid, we were happy with that. It was our first trip to Egypt and we thoroughly enjoyed it! All the staff were lovely and friendly and spoke very good English. As mentioned in some of the other reviews, the Russian guests are sometimes quite rude, but this means the staff are even friendlier to other guests who are nice to them!! The hotel grounds are really nice, with lots of different areas and garden settings amongst the pools.

The food in the buffet was really good but it was lovely having access to the a la carte restaurants - one of the main reasons we chose this hotel. We tried the Chinese, Mediterranean and seafood and they were all lovely. It was my birthday while we were there and my husband had informed the restaurant before hand so they made me a very yummy birthday cake and brought it out after dinner and sang happy birthday in Arabic, which was lovely! The ice and salads etc were all done with treated water, so were fine to eat and neither of us had any stomach problems.

The swimming pools looked lovely and there were plenty of them, but they were freezing cold in Feb and even the one that was "heated" was still rather chilly! The private beach is very good, with bar, toilets, towel hut & games like volleyball & boules. The sea was a little warmer and the snorkelling off the private jetty was quite good, if a little wavey.

We were upgraded from a standard room to a superior room as we had emailed beforehand and told them it was our honeymoon. I think the main difference was this had more room than the standard, and it was fine for what we needed. Ours was room 8311, which was near the Billiard Bar (very good, with free pool tables!) but also near the children's club and amphitheatre, meaning it was quite loud during the day and evening - wasn't really a problem as we were normally out of our room during the day and it didn't go on too late.

We visited the spa to use the sauna etc & have a massage - the sauna & steam room were fine, but the jacuzzi was very cold! Our massages themselves were very good, but staff kept coming in and out of the room we were in whilst we were having the massage, which was very distracting & not at all relaxing. We had managed to haggle the price down when the spa guy had come round the pool to ask if we wanted the massage, so ended up getting a full body massage for 250 Egyptian pounds each (about £25), so it wasn't too bad for the price.

Overall it was a lovely stay in a clean, friendly hotel and one we would recommend.
