Returned from the Marriott on sunday, a good day to fly the airport was not so busy. On arriving at the hotel the first thing you notice is how shabby it looks, compared to 4 years ago, on our last visit. The same applies to the reception area and most of the public areas, some of the outside areas were dirty. Our room however was very clean although again past it's best. The breakfast room was very shabby with faded varnish on chairs and wood panelling, grubby chairs, chipped marble steps and cracked floor tiles. That said the food was good. All the staff are brilliant, so friendly , always willing to help. The beach area is much the same,it still has the ghastly loud " music" but the snorkelling made up for that. Although the reef is in bad condition it still has some fish, but the reef at the hotel next is better being a little larger and deeper. We had lunch at the beach bar most days, the food was very good, can recommend the bedouin salad, calamari and fish of the day.Try the Italian restaurant, the duck was amazing, a bit pricey there but worth it. Our holiday was wonderful but we won't go to there again until the hotel has been refurbished. One more thing, the amount of wasted food at breakfast was disgusting, people should be ashamed of themselves.

Room Tip: The more you pay the better it will be, higher floor less noise

The hotel is in desperate need for refurbishment. The staff are totally unfriendly, even in the restaurants, it takes forever for someone to ask if you want a menu or even take the order. Bad bad experience. And the last straw was the quality of food, too bad for the price paid, in all restaurants.

This is simply not a four star resort. It may have been four star at some point, but is seriously in need of some care and repair. Cracked walls, dirty tile grout, chipped doors, worn bedding, etc. just doesn't cut it.

The complimentary terry cloth bathrobes were so worn we refused to use them.

The worst thing, however is the service. Check inwas a nightmare. We were guaranteed an ocean view room, but when e went to our room the view was almost fully obstructed. We had to wait two hours for a room to become availalable. Even then, our room only had a partial view.

By the way, the our friends with whom we were traveling never got the ocean view they been guaranteed, supposedly because none were available. They are platinum Marriott members and should have at least been offered an upgraded room if theydwepaid for and the hotel would not even refundcompThe internet never worked in the lobby as promised.

I had plans to get spa treatments, but luckily asked for a tour. Well the so-called "spa" consisted of one treatment room and was so musty I instinctively covered by mouth when the door opened. The attendant must have known, because he didn't bother to escsort me on my "tour" and didn't even try to stop me to book ont he way out.

At breakfast, I had to get up and find someone to gte soem coffee, becuase the wiaters were too busy setting up tables to serve us.

We asked for extra towels at the pool and we were told we oculd only get one towel each. Come on!

Everyone except one guy, Mohammed, at the desk pretended not to speak English whenever we called down with a service request.

By the way, we'd also asked for rooms close to our friends. Well, we ended up in rooms on opposit sides of the hotel. hard to believe since everyone kept telling us during our stay how empty the hotel was compared to last year (because of the political situation).

Don't waste your money. The only thing worth any money here is the Red Sea, which you can access for free from anywhere in the area.

The Mariott beach resort is actually 2 hotels. One on the beach side of the 4-lane road the other on the mountain side. Both are referred to as the 'Beach resort' which could be a trap if you are not expecting it like we weren't.

The mountain side hotel is quieter with no external foot traffic. There being no point. The beach is on the other side of the road.

There is 1 bar and 1 (buffet only) restaurant on site. All the other bars/restaurants are on the beach side. You do get rather good at crossing the road...

Excellent resort. Very good & cooperative staff. All restaurants are nice & the breakfast is very good. Japanese restaurant is very expensive (220 us $ for 4 persons without drink).
Location is perfect. Wherever you go, in the hotel and the surroundings, you can go for a nice walk, easily find your taste for dinne with dance show and nargila
Wifi is not free, even in the lobby & the business center! & it is very expensive. This is a significant defect.!!!

Stayed for 3 days of our 12 day personal trip to Egypt and this goes down as our worse time in Egypt and the worse of our 10 year marriage!
- Checkin was 3 and by 4:30 there was still no room ready for us!
- At check-in, I provided my Marriott Gold card and while he took it to enter the information, there was no acknowledgement of my loyalty (to date, I still have not received credit for my stay on the Marriott Rewards site)
Around 5 or 5:30 p.m., they showed us room #1 which smelled horrible; They showed us room #2 which had views of buildings (this was our 10-year anniversary); They showed us room #3 with a view of a fountain but the room had two beds pushed together versus the king bed we requested; Day 2, they put us in a larger room with no odor, an ok view and 1 king bed. We stayed because I was weary of the musical rooms debacle but here were the issues:
-Cracks in the wall (pictures attached)
-Dirty shower curtain and bath
-Hair in sheet prior to us spending a night
-Door to bathroom did not fit (you had to lean and push to get it to close)
Day 3 they offered us a suite but I felt it was too late and was again tired of switching rooms
The staff here had multiple opportunities to correct a bad situation and did not even after involving a manager there
-While out by the pool, we tipped the guy to cover our lounge chairs with towels. While he left one per chair, my husband wanted a towel to dry off with after swimming and was told he already had one (apparently there was also a shortage towels at this “resort”). At every resort we have ever stayed at, you get 2 towels…1 to cover the chair and one to dry your body!
-The workout facility (if you can call it that) was a stink, mildew-smelling basement-like place with limited ventilation and windows
-Although Americans are advised not to drink the water in Egypt and Gold status should dictate a bottle of water, I was not offered any until day 3 (up until then there was water in the room with a high price tag)
-Although this place calls itself a resort, the “spa” was one massage table squeezed into already smelly workout facility ladies room with no massage therapist on staff
-In my opinion, this hotel is not fit to have the Marriott name
-They have tainted our 10-year anniversary which we will never be able to change (I could go on for 10 more line regarding service levels but I think by now you get the picture)
-We would only recommend a stay at this "resort" it it was FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: There are none!

My wife and I recently stayed here following a week by the Nile at Luxor. Having done a fair bit of temple and tomb visiting from Luxor we looked forward to some snorkelling in Sharm. We have visited Egypt several times before including Sharm, so reckon ourselves 'old hands' at this. Our hotel in Luxor (Steigenberger) was excellent in every respect and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. We had previously stayed at the Hyatt Regency in Sharm, but this time elected to save a few £s by going to the Marriott and thinking: 'it can't be that different from the Hyatt, surely?'....but it was! It was a real disappointment. We had stayed in the Mountain side complex rather than the sea side (based on earlier Trip Advisor advice) and unless you are young and like very noisy music etc all day and night, this is the best bet. However, the mountain side also has annoying loud music and 'entertainment' which it seems difficult to avoid. We visited the beach only once....never again! It was PACKED with people (Luxor had been relatively tourist-free), and with loud music blaring over speakers. Swimming was confined to small buoyed-off areas due to large numbers of powerboats coming and going, and forget snorkelling!

This really disappointed us as the Hyatt Regency had offered the wonderful Garden Reef to snorkel right off the beach.....but the Marriott beach was more like Weymouth on a Bank Holiday!

We survived by booking days out on snorkelling boats, and can really recommend Ras Mohammed.

We were B&B, having lunch on board snorkelling boats (excellent) and walking into Sharm for supper (we really recommend KAN ZEMAN where the food was wonderful and service really excellent) and the atmosphere was lively. Breakfast at the hotel was disappointing and the service by waiters was off-hand and inattentive. The excellent swimming pool had an island bar whose staff were particularly dozy/uncaring. When I arrived 2 minutes excatly after Happy Hour had started, I was told "Happy Hour starts in 5 minutes"....I came back 3 minutes later and asked if Happy Hour had started and was told "yes, of course"....in a "soooo....whatever" sort of voice.

Very disappointing. If you are going to Sharm try to stay at the Hyatt Regency rather than the Marriott if you can afford it.....you won't be disappointed. You get what you pay for, as they say!

Room Tip: Unless you are young/deaf, try Mountain side and a room facing AWAY from the pool. Spend the days ou...
