“Never again!”
Reviewed April 26, 2014 via mobile

We were really looking forward to this holiday and after reading some good reviews but also some bad ones we tried to stay positive. The hotel is dirty the dining room or I would say canteen is filthy, the food is no way to a good standard with very little choice, no fresh pasta station and only one choice of a cooked meat joint and was always just warm. Crockery chipped and dirty. We ate out in Soho Square twice as we couldn't stomach the food. The Italian not too bad in the hotel and the Asian cost us £65 for 3 of us you even have to pay for drinks. Pool area not bad but bar glasses are swilled not washed in a dish washer so we used straws even for beer as we could see grime around the rims. Room not bad and cleaner worked hard so we tipped him twice. No waiter service in the day or night and entertainment limited. Some staff were friendly but some looked like it was such a chore to serve with a smile but to be honest I felt for them with complaints galore. The only good thing was the hot sunshine and chill for a week. We will not go back and don't recommend - this hotel really needs management to get a grip and also get it all steam cleaned.

We had a wonderful holiday here at end of March/beginning of April. Weather was lovely and hotel was perfect. Here is my full review.

We arranged our flights and hotel separately so were not on a "package". I arranged our airport transfer directly with the hotel so our driver was there to meet us just outside the airport terminal. The drive to the airport is only 10-15mins so your holiday will start very soon! As the hotel is so close to the hotel there is some aircraft noise in the distance but it didn't bother us.....it's not a hugely busy airport anyway.

We arrived at the hotel and got checked in, everything explained to us and we were then taken to our room by golf cart. We stayed in the newer side of the hotel as the pool was being refurbished in the beach side complex so not many people were staying on that side. Our room was lovely, located by the middle/family pool and next to one of the kids slides so at first I wondered if it would be noisy first thing in the morning but the rooms are soundproofed very well so we didn't hear a thing. Great black out curtains too so we weren't woken up before we were ready. The beach side complex is only 10 mins stroll away, there is also a minibus that can take you there is you have small children or are not too mobile.
We had a King Hilton Deluxe room on the ground floor with terrace and direct access to the pool side which was lovely. There is a small table and 2 chairs on the patio. The room is very spacious, very comfortable firm bed, additional sofa bed as well as a table and 2 chairs inside. Flat screen TV, mini bar (which was stocked up each day with a few beers and soft drinks), decent enough hairdryer although it did overheat a few times (but I had it on hottest setting and it was around 30c outside). There is also a kettle, cups and a small selection of tea etc.
Bathroom was a decent size with separate bath and large walk in shower. Lots of surface space for toiletries although the hotel do provide some of their own. My only negative would be that you can’t lock the patio doors from the outside so when you leave your room you have to go out the back way rather than from the terrace if you want to make sure your room is locked up securely…..it is only 2 mins walk though so not a huge issue. The other is that there were a few rusty looking marks on the bath tub but as we prefer showers in a hot climate it didn’t bother us.
Every day we got back from the pool or beach our lovely housekeeper Galal had been in to the room to tidy it up and leave us one of his wonderful towel creations.

The newer complex has 3 pools and 2 pool bars which you can swim up to. We choose to sit at the adult only pool some days as it was less busy. The areas are all very clean. When you check in at the hotel you will be given towel cards which you then exchange at the pool side for towels. We found the staff down at the beach side to be more helpful in finding sun loungers for us and they always welcomed us with a smile and some chat. We had given one of the guys (sorry I can’t remember his name) a small tip early on and he then, without us asking, reserved our sun loungers for the rest of our stay which was lovely. The beach area is very nice and it's tiered so you never feel like there are lots of people there. Great snorkelling to be done here, you can hire equipment for free, you just need to put down a security deposit. I couldn't believe all the type sof colourful fish we could see right there. The beach bar wasn’t open during our stay but the sunset bar is just at the back of the beach serving drinks and lunch time food (great baguettes).
Food: I was a little worried about what the food would be like as I'm quite a fussy eater at times and don't eat any meat. There is a lot of choice in the buffet restaurant, starter section with usually 2 soups every night, lots of main course choices...aways a veggie option, great deserts!
Breakfast was fantastic, we decided on omelettes every day which are made up fresh for you. There is also the usual cereals, cooked items, fruit etc. Our waiter Mohammed Ali looked after us very well and made our stay even more enjoyable...great service!
We always had lunch either at the pool bar or down at the Sunset bar when we were at the beach so can't comment on any of the other lunch options.
We tried the Italian restaurant one night, as other reviews have said it's not the greatest but that's not to say that it's not enjoyable. We also eat in the Asian restaurant one night and the food was absolutely amazing, very tasty. My only negative would be that it was quite empty (probably because you have to pay extra for it) so that meant there wasn't much of an atmosphere.
re Entertainment, we are not people that really get involved with hotel style entertainment so I can't really comment much on it. It seemed to revolve around the children and we were having a child free holiday. Saying that we found the entertainment team friendly without being pushy. We preferred to go to the Q Club bar for a few drinks at night although we nicknamed it "god's waiting room" as there wasn't much happening there. If you fancy a change of scenery then Soho Square is only a few mins walk along the road from the hotel, there is a selection of shops, bars and restaurants here.

There are sales staff from the spa walking around the hotel each day so we decided to go for massages, Egyptian and Thai. Both were very enjoyable. Again the sales staff are never pushy so if you say no thanks they will leave you alone. Same goes for the excursion sales guys which we never went for.

Overall we got exactly what we wanted out of this holiday which was good accommodation with great staff, sunshine, relaxation & good food. I would definitely stay here again.

See also my review of Sinai Safari adventures re the quad bike/stargazing trip which was fantastic. We booked directly with them.

Room Tip: Ask for ground floor if you are not good with steps as there are no lifts to the rooms.

Stayed at The Hilton Sharks Bay for 1 week in April 2014, 2 adults and 1 child 14. Only 20 mins from airport, so after landing was in hotel very quickly. Check in was efficient, but not welcoming. We were staying in the new half, which was a shuttle or golf buggy away from the reception, but definitely, the better half to stay in. Concierge were very helpful and engaging.
Room was excellent, spacious clean and well equipped, we stayed in a delux room.
The rooms were cleaned daily, and were always spotless, and the daily question of what the housekeeper would design out of the towels, kept us amused every day.
The Air conditioning in the room was powerful, but it was better than it not working, but during the night, would sometimes turn it off, just for the quiet.
There were 3 large pools, 2 not heated and were particularly cold, the heated was fine, plenty of sunbeds, although on a few days, the wind made it impossible to put up the parasol, and as the temperature was always in the mid 30s, this did cause a slight problem.
The food was a slight disappointment, the main buffet restaurant, was at best average, ok for breakfast and a light lunch, but dinner was very ordinary, so booked the Italian for the last 3 nights, which was very good, the cost is only £2 per person booking fee, so a no brainer really, but it gets booked up very quickly, so book early.
Also tried the Asian Restaurant, which is priced at full menu price, so our bill for the 1meal for 3 with no starter and desert was £60 and the food was disappointing.
Overall, a very good holiday and excellent value for money, the hotel was very good, apart from the buffet restaurant, but having only paid £600 for the hotel for the week all inclusive, was happy to work around the dinner meals.
The staff were mixed, between those who were working towards a tip, being very attentive, sometimes over attentive, and those, who were not in a position to be expecting a tip, e.g Guest Services, Front Desk, very abrupt and matter of fact.

Room Tip: Ask for new half of hotel rooms 2001- upwards
