We stayed at the Coral Beach Tiran for a week in August 2009. After getting through the rather chaotic airport the transfer to the hotel was only 15 minutes. This was just a week in the sun for us with no excursions and if you are doing similar there is no need to get a visa at the airport.
We had a standard room which was large, clean and comfortable. Even though we had declined to pay the extra for a sea view room we had a partial sea view anyway. There was only a shower and no bath which seemed a bit unusual, however the shower was powerful and there was always hot water (beware though, especially with younger children, that the temperature of the water from the mixer taps on its hottest setting can be extremely hot).
You are provided with a 1.5 litre bottle of mineral water for use in your room which has to be collected in the afternoon from the Blue Moon Bar; if you want more than one bottle you have to pay extra for it. All other drinks are served in glasses or, if poolside, plastic beakers.
The main buffet restaurant was pleasant, clean and although the food was not spectacular there was always something on the menu we liked. There are also snacks served at the pool bars during the afternoons eg pizza slices, chips, salad etc.
We spent the days by the Splash Pool which is the pool nearest to the beach/sea. There are two other pools which are quieter but we liked the atmosphere of this pool. The entertainments team at the Splash Pool have quite a good and varied programme to keep you amused such as aquarobics, dance lessons, water polo etc and are not pushy if you don't want to join in. The beach is a bit of a disappointment as it is rather small and the sand is rather gritty and unpleasant. You can't paddle in the sea either as it is very rocky, however there is a pontoon which leads from the beach out past the rocks so you can swim in the deeper water. The water at this spot is very clear and there are loads of amazing and brightly coloured fish so we would recommend taking some goggles. The weather was very hot and sunny every day and we could have sunbathed for 10 hours a day if we wanted.
There is a building site next to the hotel but there did not appear to be any work going on while we were there.
During the evenings we had dinner, played cards in the Moka Cafe (waiter service cafe bar) and watched the evening show in the Roman Theatre. The evening shows were pretty basic but they provided some amusement for an hour or so. The main bar (Blue Moon) was rather noisy, hectic and involved a lot of queuing so we avoided it.
The hotel staff were all friendly and very helpful. It is difficult to get small Egyptian notes in the UK so if you want to give a tip we suggest taking a few US dollars as these are welcome as well.
Most of our fellow guests were Russian and we have read on tripadvisor a few negative comments about the Russians on holiday. Generally the Russians at this hotel were polite, well behaved and dressed very smartly in the evenings. This made a pleasant change from the loud, overweight and poorly dressed American tourists we have regularly encountered in recent times (sorry Americans but you know it's true!).
Overall we were pleased with the hotel and had a enjoyable and reaxing break here.
