“Stella Di Nightmare?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 29, 2010

Don't believe the hype. This hotel has some serious problems. We booked this on the strength of the Tripadvisor reviews. Having just returned I noticed Tripadvisor have put a big warning on this hotel and I can see why.

The hotel itself is actually not too bad, it's well maintained. The pools are nice. The sea is right there. What is not so great is the fact we had to move twice to get a decent night's sleep. Although they did upgrade us (twice), the simple fact is once I get to my room I don't really want to pack my stuff up and hike over to another part of the complex.

The real problem with this hotel are the staff. Every single time you have to interact with any member of staff there seemed to be a problem. From a simple question to room service to the can't be bothered to serve you attitude in the restaurant. It felt like if I could do something without having to involve the staff in any way, then all to the better. Some were rude, others just deliberately deceitful (pretending they don't have change on the beach for drinks when really what they want is a tip). Not all staff were in this category but a good portion.

Although the buffet food was better than average and we got what we wanted from the trip (sun in the winter) I would give this hotel a wide berth. Definitely not what it says on the tin. 5 Star? Try 3 and a half and that's on a good day.

Dear Sameron,

We would like first to apologize for any discontentment that you might have with Stella Di Mare Sharm Beach Hotel & Spa and particularly, the Employees.

I am myself extremely sorry if upgrading you to a better accommodation triggered such a discontentment and I express my full regret.

With the big warning mentioned, read my post on the forum (18/11) you will discover how wrong you are! Unfortunately, I am not allowed to write this here, posting guidelines rules… To complete this issue, anyone can contact any reviewer from the bottom of each review “send message” to ensure authenticity, I am sure that all who will do this operation will be happily reassured!

Dear Sameron, our Employees have been and are the major asset of this property. They have been, despite your irritation, very instrumental in the positive popularity of Stella Di Mare Sharm Beach Hotel & Spa. I am not saying that we are perfect, but an enormous percentage of them are providing services without expecting any direct financial reward from customers, but appreciate when there is and are thankful. This is the direct feedback from customers’ comment cards and as well written in 9 out of 10 reviews here. An incident can always happen in a corporation, but if pointed out by customers to managers at the time, situation can be adjusted right away.

I will appreciate to be contacted with specifics in order to appreciate in depth your disenchantment which is majorly with staff and very important to me.

Dear Sameron, thank you for visiting Stella Di Mare Sharm Beach Hotel & Spa. We hope when all the detailed elements of your dissatisfaction will be gathered that we will be able to grasp the core issue and translate this into a return visit in the future.

Yours,

Denis Dernault

Stella clearly has a plan to compete with the established, branded hotels in Sharm.
It's potential however, has yet to be realised. European visitors should be aware that it's occupancy feels in the order of 70% Russian and appears to be actively promoted.

What's particularly good;
The location for snorkelling/diving.
The 2 main pools good.
Terrazza Main buffet food is varied, extensive and well presented.
Beach Bar team and food served.
Spa Pool is the only place you can get peace and quiet.
Animation Team do a great job.
Service at La Scogleria. Shame it's hardly used.

Not so good;
New arrivals will feel lost as well as unclear about how All Inclusive works and its limitations.
If allocated a room directly below public areas, be prepared to have a constant noise of chairs and tables being moved around.
The Al La Carte restaurants seem to lose out to the Terrazzo. Corallo Rosso is not able to live up to its fine dining label and has al fresco tables fit in around the pool loungers.
Grass constantly mowed in front of beach front rooms gets tiresome if you're having a breakfast coffee on your patio.

Dear Guest,

We are very grateful to have been selected, Stella Di Mare Sharm Beach Hotel & Spa, as your accommodation of choice during you last holiday. Thank you as well for your review on which we would like to comment on some of the feedback.

Note that month to date, the last day of November, we have only had 35% of the mentioned nationality which is a little bit over the percentage of UK customers. The remainder is a mix of Western and Northern Europeans plus a small fraction of Middle East region. Kindly be aware as well that October and November period is the highest peak of the citizens referred to in Sharm El Sheikh which is over 50 percent in the city…

All Inclusive package customers are given at check in a leaflet with the description of the All Inclusive program in the property which is explaining where and which products are included. Please ensure before booking with your travel company the services covered in our property with regards to this package. Do not assume from your previous experience in other hotels and countries... Furthermore, if any question, the Guest Relation Department or the Reception Clerks will be pleased to clarify any point.

We will look at the noise mentioned and ensure that this is taken care of permanently by adjusting some noise reduction accessories on the tables and chairs’ legs.
Corallo Rosso Restaurant is set as an indoor facility and do not has a terrace. We are being flexible and like to please guests who are asking to have their tables outdoor, unfortunately, not far from the pool sun beds. We have the project to implement a real terrace as it is a constant customers’ demand. For the time being we continue to be compliant and satisfy clients…

We do apologize if any inconvenience was caused due to grass mowing; it’s only a 30-minute daily, from 10:00am, in order to ensure that the lawn is properly manicured which all appreciate the quality and enjoy exercising on. We will review the schedule to assure lesser disturbance, but observe that the noise level of this special golf course equipment is far below the machines used at home. A necessary trouble to deliver quality carpet lawn…

Thank you again for your opinion and seeing the potential of our hotel, many clients believe our hotel to be in the top tiers of 5-star properties in Sharm El Sheikh.

We hope to have the pleasure of your return visit soon.

Sincerely,

Denis Dernault

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 29, 2010

WE stayed 9 nights in Stella Di Mare, late Nov 2010. Overall, we were very satisfied, but there are a few areas where they could do better. I start with the good things:
The weather was utterly perfect. A steady temperature of around 28 degrees (I'm guessing) always hot enough, with a nice sea breeze, but never too hot. There was no need for jackets in the evening.

It's a very new, scrupulously clean and beautifully mantained hotel, with far reaching views over the sparklling bright blue sea and across Nama Bay. Even though the hotel was pretty full it never felt crowded or noisy or overly-full. It was a very restful place. It is situated well away from the main 'hubbub' of Nama Bay, but only five-10 minutes by cab should you want a bit more action. Make sure you use the hotel cabs - they are very cheap, reliable and friendly, and will drive more safely and slowly if you ask them nicely - unlike the drivers from the chaotic taxi rank in town - who try to rip you off and drive like lunatics.

The hotel bedrooms are spacious, beds are supremely comfortable, with top quality pillows and bedding. The gardens and landcaped areas are immaculate and very attractive. The hotel is built into a cliff-side, so the lobby is actually at the top of the building and all the accomodation is below it. The pool and 'beach' area is several floors down, and there are man-made beach 'terraces'. There are steps down to a little bit of real beach where you can paddle - nice for toddlers, but you cannot swim from there as the coral reef is protected. However, there are two nice big pontoons where you can go directly into the sea to swim or snorkel, out past the reeef. The water is deep here though, and can be choppy, so may not suitable for children or nervous swimmers - though they do provide a few float-vests and they have lifeguards on duty in daylight hours. The snorkelling is fantastic and a huge variety of colourful fish can be seen just feet from the pontoons.

There are two good sized main pools - one has a swim-up bar, and pleasant unobtrusive music, and the other is the activities pool where they hold daily water polo, water aerobics, etc., with a little shallow splash pool for toddlers next to it. One thing this hotel gets just right is sunbeds. They are very comfy and there are lots of them. The hotel was very busy yet it was never a struggle to get one.

The best thing about this place is the staff. There are delightful. Mostly Egyptian themselves, they were warm and friendly - always happy to chat, want to do everything for you, but are never pestering or ingratiating. We always gave our favourite staff tips of between 20-50 Egyptian pounds (about two to five quid) each day and they really do deserve and appeciate it. They will look after you very well if you look after them. But whether you are a tipper or not, the main thing to say is that a genuine smile and warm 'thank you' goes a very long way with them. They like the British particularly I think, because we are poilte and friendly, and they repay us in kind. Sadly we witnessed a distinct lack of manners and respect on the part of many of the guests, (who were from a certain former soviet bloc country which shall remain nameless, but it's not Ukraine!) who seem to have a default setting of loud, rude, arrogant, greedy and over-demanding. In comparison, we British are a breath of fresh air - though to their credit the staff were patient and professional, and treated everyone with equal warmth and respect even where it wasn't reciprocated.

The local wines and spirits offered were surprisingly palatable - especially the gin and the white wine, and it is absolutely NOT worth paying extra for their imported wines (£60 for a bottle of £4.99 Jacob's Creek Chardonnay anyone?) And although the bar menu reads impressively (about 8 whiskeys to choose from) the reality is that half of them aren't actually available!

Now for the things that could be improved upon:-

Firstly the food. The main buffet restaurant is adequate, sometimes good, but never fabulous. The array of fresh salads, canapes, soups and breads is really excellent, there is always a roast meat carvery, which is fine, but the hot dishes can be a bit grey and lacklustre, and can seem very repetitive. If you are staying on an all-inclusive of half board basis you would get a serious case of buffet-fatique towards the end of your stay, so at least one trip out to eat in Nama Bay is advisable (and I can thoroughly recommend the restaurant in the Little Buddha Bar, if you do want to brave the brash, bright lights of Nama.) The hotel's Corollo Rosso restaurant has 'fine dining' pretensions, but is almost always completely empty. That is because they do not have enough outdoor tables, and the indoor area looks cavernous and intimidating, but mostly because it is too expensive, and just not good enough. On the other hand, the Asian and Sushi restaurant, perched like an afterthough on the cliff-top, and looking more like an unassuming and under-utilised ice cream parlour, is excellent, and the hidden gem of the hotel. All outdoor tables, right at the water's edge, beautiful views, floodlit at night, and beautiful food - whether you are eating from the all inclusive menu or the a la carte - thoroughly recommended.

The main lobby bar and lounge (upstairs at the rear of the reception area) allows indoor smoking, which we found very off-putting, especially as it always seemed too hot in there. And although there was supposed to be WI-FI access, we could never get a strong enough signal to use our own ipad and laptop.

The evening entertainment was very low-key, with a house band doing typical bland caberet music with a latino flavour over dinner every night, and the occasional show of Egyptian dancing. On Saturdays there is a very laid-back beach party, with a DJ playing stuff that appeals to all nationalities, and we enjoyed that very much - there were cushions on the floor, shisha pipes, and dancing in the sand, and it was all very laid back and lovely. There is a nightclub, but we didn't use it - so can't comment.

I used the spa twice and found the therapists excellent (especially the lovely chinese lady with the red-blonde hair - she was an angel, and really looked after me when I was feeling a bit poorly.) The treatments were fair value for money - though I'd liked to have seen a wider choice on the spa menu.

And yes - I did succumb to the dreaded lurgy - it seems to be a 50:50 risk in Egypt I'm afraid - no matter how careful you are or how clean your surroundings appear to be. However, there is a medical centre on site, with an English speaking doctor, and the concierge will send out to the pharmacy for the local wonder-drug to bung you up again, and although you'll be a bit delicate for 48 hours or so afterwards, you can get on with enjoying the rest of your stay.

Dear Tigclarke,

Thank you for staying with Stella Di Mare Sharm Beach Hotel & Spa, we believe that you have definitely enjoyed your vacation with us!

With regards to some of your feedback, we do have menus rotation of 14 days in the buffet style restaurant La Terrazza (different menus) for lunch and dinner, despite that for breakfast, the international classics are already a very wide choice and there is only little change you can provide daily …

Corallo Rosso Restaurant, cavernous and empty? Cavernous: a high ceiling modern restaurant which materials encompass wood veneer paneling juxtaposed with marble flooring complemented by dramatic windows, cavernous is just not the right adjective here..! Empty: looking at our weekly stats we have an average of 300 covers for a seating capacity of 60 covers, in our book is not that bad…

Thank you for alerting us with the temperature in the lobby we will monitor the matter and adjust accordingly. The complementary Wi Fi in the lobby has pleased more than one; this can be read in some of the reviews. It can happen that unfortunately, sometimes with the number of users (from time to time downloading contents) that the signal weakened. One just has to try at a moment when the load is normal or use the wired Business Center as a second option.

We are sorry to hear that you felt ill during your stay and are advising our residents to be very careful where they eat out of the hotel. An impressive number of long time travelers to Egypt who have been sick in the past in various other properties, have mentioned in here website, that they have fully enjoyed every single day of their vacation with us without any discomfort because they have refrained to dine outside and have used only our food and beverage facilities in our premises for their meals… The cleanliness and organization of our hotel reported by many apply as well in the food handling and production areas!

Dear Tigclarke, we would like to thank you to have taken the time to post your overall positive review and hope to welcome you in the future.

Best Wishes,

Denis Dernault

My husband and i spent a lot of time studying tripadvisor before we booked our holiday. This hotel seemed to have really good reviews so we decided to book it with first choice. We were not disappointed!
The room was a super delux with a sea view - very nice. Sometimes we would get little surprises like choc and puddings left in the room for us! The rooms were cleaned really well everyday.
The pools were clean and not busy. Beach towels are provided so dont take your own.
The beach area was clean with loads of sunbeds so easy to find one at anytime of the day. The only way into the sea was off the jetty but this was not a problem.
The food was yummy. We did half board which was a bit boring towards the end of week cause there is only one restaurant to eat at.
The staff were great - no hassle for tips etc.
We did the first choice trip to Luxor which was tiring but totally amazing and we were looked after well.
You can not walk into the "tacky" Naama bay but it was easy to get a taxi ride in. We did this once just to experience the "Blackpool of Sharm"!!

Dont hesitate to book the Stella if you want a relaxing, getaway from it all, not do much holiday. You will be well looked after!!
Thank you Stella and thank you everyone on tripadvisor.

My Wife and I have just returned from a week at the Stella di Mare (18-25 November 2010).

Excellent room & view (840), food (massive variety and plenty for eg vegetarians and beautifully presented in buffet style restaurant), service, pool and private beach layout and evening entertainment.

Also as an unexpected bonus we enjoyed the best snorkeling we found in Sharm el Sheikh (at least by comparison with the glass bottom boat and VIP Tiran Island snorkelling trips we went on) just off the hotel's own private beach area and reef!!

All the hotel staff from reception to room service and pool attendants, management and restaurant chefs, maitre d's and waiters/resses were unfailingly welcoming, polite and helpful and could not do enough to please - whether there was any prospect of being tipped for their efforts or not.

Exceptional individuals amongst the hotel's impressive team of people were Reda Bushra (Room Service - see photo example of his daily towel sculptures for us), Ghada Ashmeed(?) (Restaurant Waitress) and Omar Ahmed (Reception Porter).

Also deserving of mention is Beckie the Thomson First Choice rep who was extremely pleasant, helpful and efficient.

We were so impressed with all aspects of the hotel and the service we received that we insisted on seeing the General Manager (Dennis Denaut) to express our appreciation when we left. He was very charming and appreciative and very obviously 'on the ball' so it clearly (as ever) all comes from the top.

Everyone we spoke to who was staying there were equally impressed with the hotel and their stay there. In our view it absolutely deserved the very high Trip Advisor rating (4th) it had just before we went out. No idea how or why it's apparently now 44th in the space of a week or so.

In short an absolutely fabulous experience. We would not hesitate to go back. If you get the chance - go to this hotel!

Dear Guest,

We are pleased that you was overall satisfied with Stella Di Mare Sharm Beach Hotel & Spa
services during your last vacation.

Sorry for the noise from the neighborhood due to the Muslim festival period and we are very surprised with the smell in the room mentioned and will review immediately… With regards to change not given back, if this occurred, Management, who is very visible, should be immediately alerted. Furthermore, we encourage all to charge their rooms’ account while in residence for better convenience. Settlement of accounts could be at the end of the stay or regularly, according to clients.

Note that a bottle of beer cost L.E. 30 and that imported spirits and wine have a custom duty of 350 to 400 percent when entering the country…

Dear Guest, Thank you for staying with us, we hope to have your visit again in the near future.

This hotel has everything; a great spa, lovely pools and lawns, awesome snorkelling and diving on site and superb evening entertainment. The exceptionally friendly staff deserve a special mention, warm and charming, nothing was too much trouble. We were on a B&B basis thinking that it wasn't worth the money for all-inclusive, however the 'local' drinks
included may make AI worthwhile as the wines aren't too bad, imported New World wines were around £70 a bottle, local £15. AI may restrict your restaurant menu choices but you do get a discount on the full menus. The 3 restaurants are fantastic, each is different and the food excellent quality and value. The small terrace hanging above the lit coral deserves a special mention! Na'ama Bay is a £3 taxi away and is bustling with many bars, shops, restaurants and clubs. Beware that depending which side of the hotel you're on may mean occasional intrusive noise from Club Pacha in NB. A couple of points; there's a large proportion of Russian guests, research when the next Eid is as the hotel fills quickly with Arabic guests and the sun sets at 5pm in November. A snorkelling or diving (hotel do a 2 day PADI course fir £180) boat trip to Ras Mohammed is a must, as is a coach trip to St. Catharine's Monastery. A beautifully appointed 5* hotel, we were heartbroken to come home!
