“Wait until the refurbishment is complete!”
Reviewed February 27, 2013

We've just returned after staying here from Feb 15th - 25th 2013. Oh dear!

My comments are aimed at Thomson/First Choice - currently the sole UK operator - rather than the Hotel itself.

There is extensive refurbishment work going on as the complex is being changed to an Aqua resort. All the bedrooms are being stripped back and rebuilt. And unfortunately it's very intrusive. At 7.40am on the second morning we were woken by workmen drilling, hammering, banging, shouting etc.

When we complained to the Thomson Rep we were told that it's been a real issue for Thomson guests and communication from the UK has been both poor and slow. The Rep seemed disillusioned, downbeat and rather compromised and said the hotel management were informed of the early noise on a near daily basis, the builders were told off, started a little later for a day or two and then resumed at about 7.30 again.

We don't blame the hotel for this. It certainly needs a refurbishment. Though the pool/beach area is incredible, the interior public areas are very tired - approaching grim. Speaking to some regulars - they had visited 7 and 9 times - they agreed the place was looking very tired. By the way, the hotel staff were generally very helpful and the service they provided is excellent.

But Thomson - your communication from start to finish was dire! We paid for a premium room and weren't really able to enjoy between around 8.30am and 5pm due to the noise. On departure we even had to find a rep to let them know our coach hadn't shown up and was over an hour late. We were hurriedly shown into a taxi amidst an atmosphere of confusion as apparently the hotel was unable to accommodate all the new arrivals.

PS. I called Thomson yesterday to enquire about the 'building work'. The lady said she had nothing about building work 'on the system', would check with head office and call me back. 27 hours later I'm still waiting. Am I surprised...? No.

Thomson, you have had our money! I would love to discuss this further with you. But I doubt if I'll hear 'a dicky bird'. Poor show and totally unacceptable.

Room Tip: The refurbished rooms overlooking the pool area facing South enjoy the sun for most of the day.

My friend and I booked this holiday to escape the miserable snow cold and ice and we weren't disappointed. We arrived Friday 15th February and whilst it was windy it weren't too cold. Our room had a sea view which was lovely it hadn't yet been renovated so the bathroom looked a bit tired but in all honesty I really didn't think it was an issue, everything in the room worked and looked clean an tidy. Aziz our housekeeper cleaned it everyday and made lovely decorations for us to return too, even a flower decoration one day. We decided to move room because it was too noisy with the renovations. Whilst we were informed of renovations 2 weeks before we flew we were assured they weren't visible and guests were kept away this isn't the case, there was renovation all across the hotel which on some days started at 7am and finished after 8pm. The renovations are almost complete though so please do not be put off by reading this. It did not ruin our holiday, yes you could here work going on if you was in the room and by the quiet pool but if you had ipod you could drown it out.We went to see Julie from guest services to complain about the noise and she had us moved within 2 hours to a much quieter room. The weather was lovely much better than we expected, we booked 2 trips with Thompson vip cruise which was lovely though you do get the hard sell on photos and dvds and also the star trip in the dessert which in all honesty i found a little bit touristy however once the stars were out and the astrologer took over it was amazing which is after all why we went on the trip. We were lucky enough to see a shooting star as well which made it more magical. Food wise we didn't struggle, The Indian A La Cate was amazing i struggle with spicy food so the chef did something different for me to eat, they really were kind and attentive. Mermaid for lunch was a set menu but was plenty to choose from the pizza was amazing and Dine around there was plenty of choice too. Alcohol wise i struggled but im not a big drinker so knew i would but there was plenty on non alcoholic cocktails and drinks. The animation team were lovely always happy to stop and chat we joined in water aerobics on the last day and regretted not joining in sooner. The evening entertainment was not the best they did what they could with little resources they had but again this will all change in May so please don't let me put you off booking. The location was amazing the gardens, pool, eating places were all very well maintained and cleaned regularly. I would not think twice about booking again after the renovations are complete. Bobs shop is on resort and he looks after you his prices don't differ too much from off resort but he is fair I did bargain with him a little. The reps Ryan and Bronwyn were lovely and again always happy to help and answer any questions.

Room Tip: The sea views are worth the upgrade for, however pool views overlook the stunning gardens that are w...

We stayed there for 1 week at the beginning of February 2013. It's a beautiful hotel, it was being refurbished when we were there, we were given a brand new redecorated room, everything was spot on, only the paravan of the shower was too short and when we used the water at higher flow it would just flood the bathroom, so whoever had the idea it wasn't the best.
The food was nice, but the inside restaurant for the main buffet was always smelling of food, so after every dinner we felt as if we had been in the kitchen a whole day and like the clothes, the hair were so smelly.
The entertainment team wasn't very good, they chose some people with not too many talents (especially the entertainers from UK, they were the worst and less talented).
Also, the spa team were quite pesting us every day they saw us at the pool trying to get us to book any of the massages although we told them every day that we were not interested..
But I guess that's just the arab style, they probably believe that they're friendly when trying to talk to you even when you just want to hang around and relax..
The beach was wonderful and clean, great place to realx, we didn't go in the sea or the swimming pools as it was a bit chilly and windy sometimes, but we still had a great time, so overall it was a good holiday and for the little money that we paid we would definitely recommend this hotel.

This hotel has very friendly staff and we really enjoyed our stay. Room and balcony very nice - the bathroom a bit tired, but no big deal.
The food was good and varied and none of us got tummy upsets at all, so the hygiene standards are high. You can have the ice, no problem, so it must be made with bottled water.
The pool areas are great and over a path straight to the beach, which was lovely - you can walk a long way in either direction.
Snorkelling was good when you got out to the coral. We found the best way was to hire a 2 man electric boat (they'll let you go with 3). About 15 mins out on the boat gets you to the coral. These boats have a glass bottom viewing area - which I used and was really good.
For more excellent snorkelling get a taxi OUTSIDE the hotel (much cheaper) to Shark's Bay - a beautiful private beach (you pay £2.50 each to get in and that gets you on a sunbed on the beach and use of the jetty). This trip cost £5 each way in a local taxi. TAKE ENGLISH MONEY as that's what they want and you get a good deal.
The trip to Ras Mohammed is great - we went with a tour that we booked outside the hotel (good deal) or if there are 4 of you, I'd get a taxi - always agree the price before you get in.
We found the trip to Old Market a bit dull and could have bought everything on offer there at the shopping places outside the hotel.
I had a massage at the Spa and it was amazing - haggle on the price when you book it, as they start out very high.
Overall a very good place to stay.

Room Tip: We were top floor near the reception and there was no noise from the building work, plus close to th...

Went to this hotel with my sister, who finds it hard to walk without a stick. The hotel was beautiful, set right by the beach, with its own security either side. The pools were clean and quite big, there were two. One had all the music and water polo, bar, etc and the other was more quiet and had a childrens section. The rooms were enormous, including the bathroom and the balcolny was larger than usual too. In with the All Inclusive deal was a meal at the Indian and Italian restaurants, which were both good. The food was excellent throughout, the only thing I missed was pork, which being muslims wasnt served at breakfast time, i.e. bacon or sausage, but beef alternatives are available. There is a path that runs right at the side of the beach, we went for walks after our meal at night, the path is lit. We had a spa at the hotel, very good but quite expensive. We also went to the desert and drive the quad bikes, had a drink with the nomads too and saw how they existed. No need to take towels. A card is given to you on the first day. Yo swap the card for a towel and you get the card back at the end of each day when you hand the towel back - fantastic! The sunbeds around the pool and on the beach were of a high quality and free on the beach and the towel system was the same on the beach too. We didnt exchange any money because we were told they accepted pounds, and they did. Never changed any money at all. Saved a fortune by not having to. Our first time there and cant wait to go back - lovely place, lovely hotel, lovely people.

Room Tip: They are doing part of the hotel up. Ask for rooms away from that.

Just back from Coral Sea -Feb '12 and had a lovely week.
Rooms: renovation work going on. Sea View rooms are right above the builders, but we mentioned it to reception and were moved to lovely garden room on the other side of complex within 10 mintues, no hassle at all and hardly noticed the builders for the rest of the week. Bedroom was a little tired but perfectly clean and the housekeeper was brilliant, leaving lovely towel animals and fresh flowers on the bed each day. Hotel generally very clean and well kept.

Gardens/Pool: The gardens are beautifal and very well maintained. 2 pools - the heated one is small but it's the busiest as has music and the entertainment team playing games etc. The other pool is huge and is much quieter for those wanting to chill out in peace. it's not heated but quite a few were managing a swim.

Food: Excellent. Lots of choice for all tastes, all very fresh and no problems at all. Waiters very good and friendly without hassling. Enjoyed the Italian for our free A La Carte meal. Mermaid Restaurant by the pool has good set menu and it less hectic than the main restaruant at lunchtime.

Trips / Outside the hotel
Go to the Bus Stop area opposite the hotel entrance for free WiFi. Usual tourist shops in all directions but worth a look if you fancy a bargain. Got hassled a lot as expected but just smiled and firmly said no and it was fine. Worth getting out to do some of the trips as they're not too expensive.

Wouldn't go back as not much else to see around here, but good for a bit of winter sun and chilling out by the pool.

Room Tip: avoid sea view room at the moment until buidling work complete.
