Excellent hotel with superb staff but getting a little frayed round the edges

Our 3rd visit to the coral sea in 4 years was pretty much like returning to our 2nd home. Many of the hotel staff are the same from 4 years ago and welcomed us back with open arms.
The hotel itself has not changed much at all. Infact it doesnt seemed to have had anything done to it cosmetically since our first trip. I would say accomodation wise it is now verging on 3 star. This is due to the very tired looking bathrooms mainly. Each year they have attempted to be patched up but now really look grubby however clean they are.
While the rooms themselves are extreamly spacious, again they are starting to look tired. I had a problem this year with the bed. It was very hard and lumpy and being 5 months pregnant i struggled to get comfortable with bits digging into my sides. On closer inspection the matress had definatley seen better days! I did report it to reception who could not have been more helpful and by 5pm that same day they had added another mattess topper to the bed. While this was better, it still didnt take away the fact the mattress is really only fit for the bin.
At the time of booking we could only get garden rooms, so a few weeks before i contacted the hotel and requested upgrades if posdible for myself and my parents who were travelling with us (their 4th visit). We arrived after a pleasant jorney to sharm to find 2 rooms beside each other on the ground floor looking over the river pool. Perfect!
Alot of staff have been promoted or moved about and you get the feeling something is going to change at coral sea. The staff i really cannot fault and they truelly make your holuday. Always smiling, always asking if they can help. From the bar to the restaurants to the towel/pool attendents to the cleaners. No one can ever do enough for you. They are paid a pittence and work for 3 months solid with 10 days off inbetween but 99% of them are never looking for or expecting a tip from you!
A special mention to luca & the animation team. Its really is a big improvemnent on years past and luca who has just taken over the role of leading the team spent everyday pre and post shows looking for feedback. He genuinely took on board any criticism and in our 14 days we saw many improvemnts from suggestions made! If given time & resources they could finally nail whats been sadly lacking from the coral sea for years.
Outside the hotel is still set on stunning suroundings. Beautiful gardens and beach which is near on deserted - as is the shallow warm sea (we saw a huge difference in snorkerlers since our last visit - maybe a knock on effect from the shark attacks months back - but not a bad thing for the coral - maybe now it will have time to rejuvinate!)
The hotel reception areas are pristine & grand looking and the dine around restaurant although busy there is always a good choice and food is tastey and seems much improved every year. Breakfast has a large selection of breads, pastries, pancakes, cereals, eggs (poached, fried, scrambled, ommlettes & hard boiled) there is french toast, yogurt, tomatoes, cold meats etc etc i still managed to hear people moaning that there was not the traditional english bacon, sausage etc and that there wasn't the traditional english roasts etc at night! Would you go to italy and expect english breakfast?
Lunch was a choice of a set menu outside in the mermaid bar on the beach (fish & chips, pizza, burger, chicken etc) this is served at your table with the additional self service for salad starters and ice cream and cakes. We favoured the food here mainly because the pizza and ice cream was to die for, but also because it was nice to sit and eat outside. The lunch service in the dine around restaurant was also good. There were choices if hot dishes, chips, salads, pastas, pizzas, toasties and breads and puddings.
There was also a bbq for those wanting to stay by the pool.
Di nner is again in the dine around or the italian ill caparicco or the mermaid bar which doubled as an indian in the evening. We only visited the italian. Each party can visit once per week and drinks are chargeable. The food was delicious (minus the terrible tiramasu) and well worth the visit!
The hotel spa is also worth a visit. The spa staff usually approach 'newbies' on the first day round the pool and before we knew it we were in the spa for 3 massages. My daughter (12) and mum loved it but because i had to have the special pregnancy massage on my side i didnt really enjoy laying for an hour in one position and was numb after it. But please dont put this off as my mum & daughter returned for a 2nd massage a week later as part of the deal (aporox £30 each for 2 one hour massages). Please note though that the massage staff are all male.
There are 2 pools at the hotel. Palms is the biggest with music and activity and a bigger bar which also stocks icecream and popcorn for the kids. We spent our last two holidays here simply because it was nearest to our rooms.
This time we were adjacrnt to the river pool which us alot quieter. On reading recent trip adviser reports i was a little aprehensive about the types of holudaymakers niw visiting coral sea, but apart from one incident where a couple from belgium were very drunk and getting very frisky in the pool infront of alot of kids (they were dealt with swiftly by the hotel manager and spent the remainder of the week on their best behaviour) there were no issues.
A special mention to mhardy, cheeky happy chappy mohamad and achmed on the river pool & the ever present nabil on the lounge bar.. He could show many a barman how to serve with lightning speed!!!
I dont think we will be returning to the coral sea again. Not for any other reason than there are plenty more places to visit and i think we've outdone our visits there now... 4 years was pretty much like returning to our 2nd home. this is our second visit to the coral sea. we travelled 5th-19th october and i must say we enjoyed it just as much if not more.
The staff at the hotel are fantastic from the moment you get off the coach to the minute you go home. We had a lovely room on the second floor with a fantastic pool and sea view, large room and spotlessly clean, Yes the bathrooms could do with a bit of tlc but it is nothing that would spoil your holiday as they clean your room every day.The housekeepers are brilliant very friendly and always have a smile on their face hello to Aziz you were amazing thankyou..You get provided with clean towels if needed everyday so no need to take towels as they are provided at the pool aswell.
The food in my opinion was better than last year alot of selection including chips pizza pasta for the children and always different meat and fish.. the bbq nights were lovely. The mermaid has less choice but is as good, and always nice aswell if you want to go late afternoon for a cool off and have a cuppa or cold drink.
We stayed round the bottom pool there is more going off there with the animation team if you want to join in..if not just tell them they will leave you alone, we had lots of laughs with these guys, especially Shetos,Mohammed and Loka. The top pool is quieter so you do have a choice of where you want to stay and then there is always the beach with its own bar and welcoming breeze. The towel guys are great always there bang on 8am with the towels and very helpful if you need it. The sea is lovely like getting a bath and the snorkelling is aswell although i do agree with a previous comment that too many boats are driving the fish away so you do have to find the coral and look but you will still see pleanty.
You have a choice on an evening of stayin around the reception area for a quiet drink or outside the restaurant where they do play a bit of music or have a guitarist on or you can go to the ampitheatre and watch the animation shows.. they had some good ones this year including magic, fire and cobra aswell as the shows they put on..
We did our excursions through Falcon adventure very good guys and reasonably priced they are just across the road from mcdonalds. We did the quad bikes and swimming with dolphins and also the go karting.. one thing to be aware of with the go karting as falcon were not aware so not there fault but we paid for 15 laps per person and this is not the case it is a race and once the first person has done the 15 laps or whatever you have paid for the race is over.. we had a 9 year old in our party who was on a slower kart and only managed 10 as did my hubby as he stayed with our son.. Just to make you aware... as i say it is the karting company here not Falcon they couldnt do enough for you...
We also did the beach party with animation team i would not do this again £6 per person children free but after the fire show it was a disco and i think there was about 15 people all in all so not much fun we left very early..
Also we did the Egyptian night with the restaurant very enjoyable although i must say none of us ate there we didnt like the food so we left to eat in the restaurant and went back to watch the show..
The hotel is situated at the begining of La Strada shopping complex a long stretch of shops and restaurants. remember to haggle at these shops its a great experience.if you dont want to go in just say no politley..you will probably see the camel guys all claim to come from yorkshire and speak cockney very funny but beware they will try and charge you for a picture with the camel nevermind the ride..
The bus stop at the other side of the entrance to coral sea is great if you fancy a change..music Karaoke and of course if you need the internet its free so long as you buy a drink.. we took the children as it also has xbox kinect and ps3 so its ideal and the staff in there are lovely.
All in all a fantastic holiday and looking forward to go back next year, must say hi to our dear friend Salama see you soon my friend... x

had a great chill out holiday our room was near the sea as we love the beach not the pools our room as always was clean every day we came back we had wine and food gifts sent to our room over our 2 week stay as ever the staff do all to make your holiday a good one the mermaid beach bar is great at lunch time for a cool drink or two and a small waiter menu eat and enjoy looking over the sea issac was great and came over as soon as we sat down the food i think was better this year, there were more speed boats and stuff on the beach that was a bit hairy if you were in the sea i think this was why there were not so many fish to see unless you went to the reef,we found this year a lot of children at the hotel running wild as there is not a lot for them to do another hotel with stuff to do would be a better choice for them this hotel is better for couples but we still had a great time and have booked to go back for our 4th holiday in sept 12 for us this is a chill out holiday this is why we go back can not fault the hotel or the staff see you all next year.

After reading many reviews, mostly bad, I must admit I was reluctant about going on this holiday but thought I should make my own mind up. I'll be honest and say I can't see why people return time after time once was enough for me. It was ok I suppose, it did the job for a well earned break however there was quite a few people who believed that everyone should be listening to their conversations! You also get to know whole families as they yell each others names constantly even though they're only sitting next to each other. Also we encountered a 'charming chap' he was obviously a regular, walk into the reception having only just got off the bus and bellowed across the bar to one of the staff to ' Oy get over here now ' and we English wonder why we have a bad reputation. Bodily functions seemed to be some what of a competition on the beach as well, lovely just what I want to hear on my holidays. Something you won't be told about until you ask your rep is that the hotel next door has a disco on a Saturday night until 4am and then Coral Sea have a beach party on Mondays until 2am so once you'll just have time to recover from Saturday in time for Mondays onslaught of music. Don't get me wrong I'm not a snob or boring but I think people should be told about these things before they book and not after. Room cleanliness - If the cleaner was in the room for 10 minutes 'cleaning' I'll be surprised. I came back one day to find more hair on the floor than when I went out. The cloth used to clean the floor was black and from what I saw just used from room to room. I read somewhere this hotel is only 7 years old well I'm surprised, our bath looked like somebody had been dancing in it in high heeled shoes it had so many chips in it. Food was ok the usual buffet fodder. Finally - I'd noticed plaques on palm trees with people names on and after a couple of days asked someone what it was all about. I was informed that once you'd been there a certain number of times you get a plaque, sorry but I think this is sad and needless to say I won't be getting a plaque. Oh and also I can't believe people think the workers look forward to you returning as their friends, the only reason they are glad to see you is because you put money in their hands. Try not doing it one year and see what reception you get!

Room Tip: Aparently the rooms to the right of reception didn't get infested with mosquitoes when we were t...

Stayed in the Coral Sea from the 13th - 20th Oct and had a fantastic holiday! Couldnt fault a thing....

Rooms - Rooms are well decorated, they do not look like they need a refurb. Some rooms are bigger than others but even the smallest rooms are bigger than most hotel rooms! Beds are huge and comfortable and sheets are changed everyday. We even had a walk-in wardrobe! The room we booked was a select sea view jacuzzi room and it was beautiful, bathroom was massive and had a lovely rainfall shower, and the bath jacuzzi was a nice touch. Sea view was worth paying for an the balcony was a good size with a table and chairs to relax outside. My boyfriend had secretly emailed the hotel before our stay with a special request for me, and the manager sorted everything out for us free of charge which was very kind of him and made our holiday extra special and was a nice suprise for me!

Pool - The pool area was lovely never had any problems getting a sunbed, pool was cleaned every night and generally the pool area was always kept to a good standard. The pool bar is great and have a varied selection of drinks, can recommend the Coral Sea cocktail and vodka, lemonade and grenadine is delicious!

Dining - The food was very good never repetative as they had different theme nights. They catered for everyones tastes so even if your a vegetarian or have allergies theres something different to eat every night. The waiters are attentive and friendly and dont even hassle about or expect tipping. The Mermaid Restraunt is EXCELLENT, the food is a very high standard and its lovely to sit in the cool shade with a view of the beach and eat a light lunch of pizza and chips, chicken, or bugers and hot dogs - with ice cream to finish. The waiters here are also excellent and the manager walks around making sure everyones happy.

Spa - Spa staff come around the pool and beach and sit next to you trying to pressure you into buying treatments from them, they are quite expensive aswell and wont give much money off but they try and convince you its a really good deal, Jorge isnt too bad but Jamies rude and acted like a child when we said no.

Aquarius Diving - Barry is lovely and arranged for us to go out on a private speed boat with our own photographer to the reef to snorkel, this was for a really good price. Although on the day it was really windy and the waves were high so we couldnt go as far out as we were meant to but it didnt even matter because i still saw a nemo fish!

Sheesha - The sheesha tent is soo relaxing to sit in of an everning and smoke sheesha. The 2 men that run it are really funny and friendly and the sheesha is only 50 egp which is cheaper than you can smoke sheesha for in england. They also have a wide range of flavours and will recommend flavours for you if you've never done sheesha before. Plus you can take your drinks from the bar here and drink while your smoking.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone, families will love it the animation team are excellent and couples will enjoy it as a relaxing break.

We returned from the Coral Sea Resort on 17 October. We had read the reviews before we went and found that both good and bad were very evident. We had a seaview Jacuzzi room was nice and large but it had not been cleaned properly, and we had to have the room deep cleaned. On the first night there was an horrendous din from the Coral Sea beach party which went on till 2am, just what you need when you've been travelling all day - this party takes place every Monday and if you want to to join them it will cost you £6!
There are two pools with swim up bars but they have linings at the bottom rather than tiles and these were sometimes a bit rouched up ready to trip you. There are lots of sunbeds but all are not in the shade and we found it difficult to get one in the shade as they were all reserved from the early hours. There is a rule that any reserved beds found unoccupied after 10 o'clock will have things removed but this was never done - some beds just had pool towels thrown on them and remained so for best part of day. I have a suspicion that the poolboys put these out as we were offered this on our second day which we rejected.
The main Dine Around restaurant offers a great variety of food which was always fresh and in most part hot. The staff in there are fantastic (without being bribed with tips) and it was always a pleasure to eat there. By the way, dont worry about the strict 'smart casual' dress code, this is completely flouted - there's nothing like a big hairy man sitting at the next table in sleeveless vest and arms covered in tattoos to put you off your dinner! There is the Mermaid snack bar down by the beach but it only offers a very limited menu at lunchtimes and doubles up as an Indian restaurant in the evening. There is also an Italian restaurant and an Egyptian night in a 'Bedouin Tent' on the complex. We didnt visit any of these as you either had to pay for your drinks (25%off) or pay for the meal at the Egyptian night. All inclusive seems to have a different meaning here!
The animation team do their best with what they are given and some of their shows were quite funny. They do work very hard and have a great rapport with the children. The shows are outside at the 'ampitheatre' where wherever you sit you are able to see. Some of the visiting Egyptian acts were a bit naff but the kids loved them.

Our stay at the Coral Sea Resort was somewhat spoilt by the fact that I was very ill with gastroenteritis (the doctor said) and I had to be given an injection and put on a drip to rehydrate me. It took me three days to really feel better and then my partner got a milder dose of the same thing and had to get tablets from the pharmacist - who seem to do a roaring trade in Sharm el Sheikh! We must commend our roomboy though, because of our illnesses he had some extra cleaning to do in our room and he took it all in his stride.

We personally wouldnt visit the Coral Sea Resort again but many do, several times - on your fifth visit you get your name plaque on a tree and there were lots of them. Dont think we'll make that somehow!

Room Tip: Seaview rooms nice but you'll get a lot of noise on Mondays and Saturdays from beach parties
