After reading many mixed views about this hotel me and my boyfriend (as a young couple) were slightly apprehensive of what to expect. We stayed at the Sol Y Mar from 23/6/13 - 30/6/13. We struggled to find any faults whatsoever.
All hotel staff are very friendly and are great to get along with. We found if you were willing to have a laugh with them they would look after you. Walied, Ahmed and Mokhtar, the bar staff during the day and night are great fun. Day time entertainment is the same each day and for both male and female, good thing is the animation staff do not pester you to participate, (which I have encountered at other hotels). Night time entertainment is varied and there is something different every night, some of the nights can be quite funny depending on what it is. Food and beverages - could not find a fault, always something for everyone, unless your really fussy and picky.

All in all a great, well looked after hotel! Very nice and quiet considering the time we went also! Definitely worth the money and be sure to return.

We stayed at the Sol Y Mar Sharks Bay Hotel in the latter half of June 2013, and loved it. The hotel is really close to the airport in Sharm El Sheikh. We’d read reviews prior to visiting the hotel that stated that low-flying planes were somewhat of a problem but we didn’t find that this was the case at all. As the hotel is so close to the airport, they are noticeable maybe once or twice a day but not something that I’d describe as a problem. With the hotel’s location in mind, I’d recommend getting a taxi to/from the airport to Sol Y Mar. We got a transfer but if we were to visit the hotel again in the future, we’d get a taxi as it’d probably work out cheaper.

There isn’t much around the hotel. It’s essentially in the middle of nowhere which is one of the hotel’s only flaws. There isn’t really anywhere outside of the hotel’s grounds that you can access by foot which is a pity. However, we did venture out of the hotel on a few occasions. Rather than using the hotel’s taxi or shuttle bus service, you’ll find that it’s cheaper to get a taxi outside. You can be sure that you won’t be waiting more than a few minutes. Taxi drivers will stop and run across the dual carriageway as they are so desperate for your custom. They might ask for 50LE/£5 to Naama Bay or Soho Square for example but we were able to get them down to 25LE/£2.50 on more than one occasion.

The hotel’s guests were made up mainly of Brits and Russians. There were very few young families. It was mainly couples of varying ages – young and old - that stayed at the hotel while we were there. At no point did the hotel feel overcrowded with too many people. You will always be seated at lunch/dinner immediately and you won’t struggle to find a sun-bed. There’s no need to be getting up to claim one at 6am – they’re available all day.

Most of the staff at the hotel can’t be faulted. From the management to the bar staff, they will do as much for you as they possibly can from our experience. Management hosted two drinks receptions on Wednesday evenings to chat with guests and ensure everything during their stay was to their liking. Similarly, the bar staff were always checking that you had everything that you need. The Animation team were on hand all day providing activities by the pool such as Water Polo, Aqua Aerobics and Darts. There’s no pressure on anyone to take part like I’ve seen in other hotels though. The same team provide the entertainment on the terrace during the evening with traditional Egyptian dancing, Karaoke and Bingo etc. My only complaint about the staff would be about Housekeeping. To say that they’re slightly inept is somewhat of an understatement. We came back to our room on more than one occasion to find that the used towels had been taken but not replaced, and the bedding had not been changed as requested. On one of the days, we contacted housekeeping and ended up waiting two hours for towels to actually arrive at our room, unable to shower and eat when we planned to.

Prior to leaving for Sol Y Mar, we read reviews that stated that there were a few accounts of things going missing in peoples’ rooms. On the back of this, we were wary from the beginning and careful about leaving any valuables around. We did arrive back to the room one afternoon to find what appeared to be wax on each button of the safety deposit box. We found this a little suspicious to say the least. We only asked for our room to be cleaned a couple of times after this and were even more careful. As a result, nothing did disappear from our room but I would advise for you to be careful.

The food and drink at the hotel is excellent. We didn’t experience breakfast as I’m not a big fan anyway but we had pizza, hamburgers and hotdogs & fries in the Dolphin Snack Bar at lunchtimes and can recommend those options. The options at dinner were great. There was a live grill cooking various meats and seafood each night as well as a station for fresh pasta. In addition to this there were sautéed vegetables and other dishes such as lasagne. Chips weren’t on the menu every night but there was plenty there for the more fussy eaters. Plenty of selection for desert too with lots of pastries and cakes.

Unlike other hotels, you won’t be bothered too much by the staff who are advertising the Spa or local excursions. Of course, they will come and speak to you but you won’t be harassed for the duration of your stay. We spoke to Emad who advertised the excursions and can recommend both the boat trip to Tiran Island as well as the Stargazing 5 in 1 trip that also included quad biking, camel riding, a visit to a Bedouin tent in the desert, dinner and a live show.

We’d definitely stay at the Sol Y Mar when we come to visit Sharm again in the future. However, we stayed at the hotel for two weeks and as a result of the hotel’s location and the fact that we’d visited Sharm previously, I felt that maybe 10 days might have been enough. For first timers to Sharm, 14 days probably wouldn’t feel like too long at all – just be prepared to use public transport if you would like to venture out of the hotel.

This hotel is excellent, don't get me wrong there are signs of wear and tear but what foreign hotel doesn't have that with the amount of people they have staying there?!

All you need to know is that the staff can't do enough, the rooms are clean the entertainment is excellent, the food is varied and we weren't ill once. Also the ice is all made with mineral water which is another area people get worried about.

A few reviews on here aren't good and I was a little worried but honestly from the moment we arrived (late due to a delayed flight) the staff looked after us and we were happy the whole time.

on arrival Mohammed on reception told us to leave our bags and head straight to the restaurant and despite it being gone midnight and it being closed there were still staff around and they made sure we got a drink and a little something to eat (Mohammed in the Barracuda restaurant in particular is an excellent host and looked after us from that 1st night and all week, always getting us drinks and finding us a nice table and always stopping to chat to us. He is also a very good dancer, getting me up whenever he appeared in the bar later in the evening).

The cleaner (another Mohammed in our part of the hotel) was lovely and always checked that the room was clean enough and although we didn't leave our towels on the floor every day like it says to if you want them changing, he always replaced them and even made us various animal displays and laid my pjs out on my bed after he had made them.

The entertainers, Karemme & GG are around the pool in the day and in the bar later on are the loveliest people, they will try and get you involved in water polo, aqua aerobics or a morning stretch in the day but if you say no they will leave you be. The music around the pool was always good, if you sit near the speakers it can be loud but we didn't mind and if you don't want it as loud just move away as there is plenty of room around the pool.

The evenings entertainment is good too, they do a mini disco for the kids if they are in the bar then there is nightly entertainment for the adults such as an excellent magician and dancers, there is a quiz and also bingo and always followed by Karemme DJing, he is passionate about his music and if you get offered to go on a night out after hours then go you will have a brilliant night (providing you like dance music and to dance).

As for the bar staff,I'm not sure you could get any better. Mokthar and Walid are the best by far, always looking after everyone and making sure you had a drink, even if you went to the bar they would not let you carry the drink back out with you as they were always ushering you out and back to your seats. They are always chatty and do the best that they can possibly do. Mokthar is definitely the crazy one, always making a joke or telling the ladies how beautiful they are, Walid is a little bit more laid back and always makes the effort to have a conversation but both of them make fantastic cocktails.

These guys also come round in the day with fruit and ice cream, watch Mokthar though he gets carried away and before you know it he has put 5 pieces of melon in your mouth before you can even chew lol, he is harmless though and great fun :)

Use the free shuttle bus to go to the sister hotel, The Jaz Belvedere is lovely and you can use their beach and are able to use your all inclusive in their snack bar throughout the day. Make sure you take a snorkel with you if you go as there is coral not too far out and lots of different fish to see. The spa is also at the sister hotel, a few people had treatments there and they loved it but we didn't have anything done.

If you are going to do any trips then go scuba diving, best experience ever and booked with Aquarius who operate with whatever rep you will have in your hotel.

Also haggle with the hotel taxi too, they are over priced and if you tell them you are going to the main road to get one there as they are too expensive they will bring their price down (pay no more than 50 Egyptian pounds to get to Soho Square it isn't far, the same goes to the airport).

All in all we had an amazing week and we will 100% go back but for 2 weeks next time so that we can do more things and spend more time with the amazing staff (providing they are all still there).

Thanks guys you were all brilliant :)

Miss Emma & Mr Lee xxxxxxx

Whilst browsing through trip advisor, i just want to tell everyone the real facts about sol y mar.
If you are a LAD and you like a beer.. The beer is shocking served in the smallest glass possible and frowned upon when your at the bar as regular as me. There is no choice of drinks at all. The snack bar is poor, the restuarant is risky 50/50 whether the foods gunna make u ill and spend the next day in bed..
Entertainment is poor day and night. Very quiet me and me girlfriend some nights was the only 2 People in the bar. And entertainment usually stopped around 11 were u either go back to your room or get a taxi to nama bay, which is about 50 egyptian poumds.
Hotel is located at the side of a highway right near the airport, so nower is walkable. The sister hotel has a beach but again poor food and drinks. The seabed is full of sharp coral and its also very windy.
The only upside was the weather and thats about it. The only entertainment we had was out of the hotel in nama bay.

The room maid was very mice kept our room clean everyday.. We had to tip the poor man. And there was a couple of friendly bar staff and others obnoxious.

Summary is, bad drinks, bad crack, wud only recommend to people who enjoy early nights and are over 70 ;)

After reading different reviews I was a bit worried about staying at this hotel but I need'nt have worried as we had a great time. I went with my husband and 15 year old daughter and we found there was plenty for us to do. The weather was fantastic, the rooms good and very clean, the towel art made us laugh. The food selection was good and drinks hit the spot. All the staff work very hard and are very good at their jobs. The management run a very good hotel..The only negative thing I would say is that 1 member of the staff Ibrahim in lobby bar was a bit of a pest when it came to my daughter and very suggestive, she felt very intimidated by him at one point he actually asked her to meet him outside, and my husband had to have a word with him. We wont let this put us off and we will be booking our next stay there for christmas and look forward to seeing all our new friends at the hotel.

Our 1st visit to Egypt & definitely not our last. The friendly staff couldn't do enough for you(Ibriham Merlin bar,Mukhtar,Ahmed,Wallied etc Dolphin Bar,Ahmed lifeguard)they made the atmosphere even more magical than it already was...It's destination is 5mins from airport but planes flying past daily doesn't bother you what so ever. Reception(Ibriham)will kindly book you taxi(£8 return) to Naama Bay,which is a must!! Spa treatment amazing(Jazmine) some treatments you have to go to sister hotel Belvedere, beautiful hotel on the beach, but the vibe is so much better @ Sol Y Mar. If it wasn't the staff being so happy & friendly I wouldn't have enjoyed my stay do much. 11/10 can't wait to go back.
