The Makadi Palace Hotel
Ranked #13 of 30 Hotels in Makadi Bay
Reviewed March 22, 2012

We have just returned from the Makadi Palace where we had a lovely time. The setting and grounds are excellent, everything surrounds a lovely large swimming pool. There are plenty of sun beds and brollys for all. The beach is fine, shoes are needed for the water as you need to walk out a little way but once at the coral there are plenty of fish to see!!!
There are 2 main buffet restaurants which serve a big selection of freshly main dishes at breakfast, lunch and dinner....the Dome and the Melange. There are other restaurants:- a Thai, The Botanical Garden and The Discovery. These are waiter served although choice is a little limited unless you wish to pay a little more (this is usually in euros ). You can visit as many times as you like but booking is required. Our rooms was a Junior Suite, it had a large comfy king size bed and a sitting area which has a telly but only one english channel. The bathroom is a little tired but functional, although it has a hairdryer its best to take your own.. The staff are friendly and very helpful but due expect a small tip, so get yourself loads of small notes - a £5 pound egyptian note is only 50p, you will find it hard to find one smaller.
All in all a lovely relaxing stay!!

Room Tip: It will depend on the time of year, in March we needed a sunny room and didn't need the air-con...

I visited Makadi Palace at the beginning of summer and reading the reviews, I think the standars are still high there. The architecture of the resort is simply beautiful, as most of the Egyptian hotel that are rewarded 5 stars. The rooms are big, with huge bed-we stayed in Junior Suite, Big balconies with stunning views of the Red Sea, corals nearby, in the sea near the hotel, good, plenty food-maybe way too much for the hot temperatures.. All in all a great experience shadowed only by the poverty of the outside world that one cannot fail to see when going on various trips. It really makes you feel ashamed that you can afford to stay in such a luxurious resort...

Room Tip: Give a tip to the front-desk man and ask for a sea-view. Usually works!

My partner and I have just come home from a week at the Makadi Palace. We did have a very nice time but I can assure you this hotel is NOT five star and would need to do a lot more to be one. Yes the grounds look beautiful at night and the complexe is kept lovely and clean but for us this is where the five star stopped.

Our first room we were given had a massive crack in the sink, there was holes in the ceiling, there was no bed cover and no lamp shades, the balcony was also very small and enclosed. We went straight to the reception and they moved us without any problems. At the time we were at the hotel it wasn't even half full so I'm not sure if we would have been given another room had the hotel been full. Our second room was nice but the balcony furniture had seen better days and the aircon which was really only a fan didn't cool us at all.

Most of the staff where very nice but we did have a problem with the towel guy letting himself in our room when we had told him twice before to go away, luckily I had put the latch on the door otherwise this could have been very embarrassing.

We took one dollar notes to tip with which was easier than taking one pound coins and the staff only ask you to change the coins up anyway. We tipped 50 dollars during our week.

The swimming pool at the Palace was so cold it took your breath away so we used the swimming pool at the Grand which was heated, still a little cold but at least you could get in.
We could get drinks at the Grand swimming pool but you could not eat in the Grand unless you bought a day wrist band which was £8.

There was three buffet style restaurants at the Palace, one burger bar, one snack bar and two Al a Carte restaurants, one of which was Thai. There was also four restaurant over the road by the family star where you could eat, Indian, Italian, French and Chinese.

All of the restaurants had AI options but the restaurants over the road seemed to have less choice. We ate at the Indian which only had three main dishes AI, the rest you had to pay for. We didn't like the Indian at all, it was very bland and was not authentic. I had one mouthful and left my Goan fish curry. My partners was just chicken water with curry powder. Not good.
The Thai was tasty but again not authentic. We also ate at the Botanical restaurant, I found the food very bland and tasteless. The portions are very small and they will not let you have any extras. The food in the buffet restaurants was about the best just because there was so much choice, although it was a little Luke warm. The cakes in the buffet restaurants look amazing but taste of absolutely nothing. All in all the food was in parts edible but mostly bland and not five star.

We did one of quad bike excursions, we didn't book this at the hotel, we walked along the beach to a complex called Tia Heights and paid £30 less and I'm sure if you booked this in Hurghada the you would have got it even cheaper.

We took the shuttle bus into Hurghada and then took a taxi to Sakkala, this is where all the shops are for buying souvenirs. Most shops sell the same stuff but it was nice to get out of the hotel for an evening. The rep told us the taxi from The Grand hotel to Sakkala would be 35 Egypt pounds but we paid 20. The hotel also gave us a price list for taxis, it said it would cost 190 back from Sakkala but we paid 80 although you need to haggle.

The evening entertainment was ok but I don't think much money was spent in that department. There was four singers on most nights who were ok but wouldn't get through the first round on the X Factor. There was other acts that were booked who danced and they were ok.

If you want a week in the sun but not more then this is the place for you. We paid £500 each for the week and I wouldn't pay more, if I did I would have been very disappointed.

Room Tip: Buy your visa from the bank of Egypt which will cost you 15 dollars rather than 13 english pounds fr...

Well, we were there again. For the 4th time. Hotel was well filled, especially German and Dutch and many Scandinavians. Compared to last year improved, this should be the case however since prices are not really low. Melange has become a kind of wok restaurant with fresh pasta. Five new restaurants in the Makadi Mall (Egyptian, Italian, French, Chinese and Indian), a large part AI, some dishes to pay a bit extra. Makadi Spa and Makadi Sunwing are partly ready. The promenade is beautiful and is almost finished with lots of bars and restaurants opening. What still remains is the construction of a new Makadi Mall, which would be ready this summer (!).
Clumsy beds are partly replaced by modern lightweight beds (see photo) Breakfast is still quite good with very tasty omelettes. Lunch usually in Italian or Caribbean (Grand Makadi) or a hamburger here and there. Also new is a pittacorner (of chicken) at Mermaids.
We'll be back in 2013!

I will start by telling you all the things i wanted to know before we went to this hotel. The weather this time of year was perfect.(much better than the canaries same time last year) .The sea was lovely and warm, ideal for the fantastic snorkelling right off the beach. We saw giant turtles & nemo amongst all the other beautiful fish. Pools are only for the brave though. There is so much food variety to choose from you cannot possibly go hungry. loads of different restaurants to choose from. The room was fine ,very large ,huge cumfy bed shower a bit slow. I think the star rating abroad is not the same as ours but knew this before we went. Very happy with the service (as always in Egypt.) Staff were excellent right across the board. You can walk all the way round the horse shoe makadi bay . Quite a long walk but lovely. Wouldn't hesitate to go back again.
