We stayed 1 week on a half-board basis in a total of 3 rooms - two connected to each other 323/321 and had outstanding view of the pool (and a partial distant view of the sea), was cooler to sit outside throughout the day. The 3rd room (324) had view of the golf course and desert but was subject to the very strong sun making it too hot to sit there for long.
On arrival a cool welcome drink given whilst you filled out registration forms. A generous tip ($10) acquired us the rooms we requested from the check-in staff - "special arrangements for our party" - worth it for the rooms we got.
Rooms - spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated. Daily cleaning was exceptional (tip around 10 eyptian pounds each day much appreciated) with the beautiful towel arrangements loved by all. If you are staying on half-board basis buy your water and drinks from the local supermarket - a third of the price the hotel charges.
Restaurant - good variety of food, ever so friendly staff - including the chefs who serve at the food stations. Food had a different theme every night - Egyptian evening provided the best tasting food. They also offered a kid's corner dish - usually pasta - but were also willing to make pizza or fries at request - very kind to the children. One of our party was afflicted by the "pharoh's curse" from the second day (just bad luck) which spoilt activities for them for the whole week. But the children and other adults did not suffer. Kitchen hygiene is a priority - hotel even offers tours of it's kitchens to guests - however, whilst we stayed there the head chef was on holiday and perhaps standards had slipped a little. We noticed after reporting the food poisoning all the station chefs were wearing disposable gloves whilst cooking and preparing the food. Hotel manager was sympathetic, but obviously used to dealing with this complaint - but at least it was addressed. No high chairs, but guest relations did say that they could get some for the future. We tipped 10 egyptian pounds every meal which was appreciated.
Pool - spotless - constant cleaning by the staff, attentive bar staff, very helpful pool and towel attendents. Smaller baby pool very warm and possibly heated. Larger pool much colder, but a welcome relief from the burning sun. Would be nice to see some sun shelter over the baby pool like in neighbouring hotels. Eco plus point - all the water used to clean then went to water surrounding plants.
Kid's club - tucked away and much smaller than other neigbouring hotels. Quiet activities offered - lovely staff. Hotel used to older clientel - many without children (some not so tolerant to seeing young children around). But it's great they have this service for families looking for a high-end hotel and facilities for children. Shaded area with swings/slides/climbing frame, along with a cooler in-door area where games and crafts take place. Although this resort is predominately for german tourists, most if not all staff speak English, including the animation team.
Animation - very calm and not pushy with activities. As most guests have older or no children it's a quieter place. Darts/board games/ billiards and table football entertained us enough without disturbing other guests. Evening entertainment was usually caberet style and over by 11pm.
Internet access - very high costs (if you only need a short time combine a shopping trip and go to downtown Hurghada and use an Internet cafe there - it costs less than 50 cents for a couple of hours) - 10 Euro a day - prices the same throughout the other hotels in the area and the internet cafe.
Spa - same prices as you would pay at home - and judging by how empty it was (plus them offering a discount on their services) guests thought it was overpriced too. Why would you pay 20 Euro to use the steam room/sauna/jacuzzi for 1 hour!!!?? Never seen that in any 5 star hotel we've stayed in - that's usually a standard offering. Given that this is one of the most expensive hotels in the area you'd think you'd be able to get a little pampering without breaking the bank any further.
Beach - is about a 5-10 minute walk (with slow children) away - take your pool towels with you. Very shallow waters - beautifully clear. Lovely sand and again very clean. A section of this busy beach reserved for hotel guests. To access beach you have to walk through other hotel complexes - the Star is definitely one of the nicer ones in comparison.
The hotel has a great eco protective attitude - encouraging guests to reuse towels, watering plants with used water, using bar soap in rooms etc. but they also have a lovely scheme whereby if you have come to the hotel for 5 times they will plant a tree in your honour and put a name plaque next to it - a very green and lasting touch which is probably one of the nicest reasons to return year after year. Pehaps we will...
