“Quiet, relaxed, almost bijou hotel with fabulous staff and service”
Reviewed October 16, 2009

We stayed 1 week on a half-board basis in a total of 3 rooms - two connected to each other 323/321 and had outstanding view of the pool (and a partial distant view of the sea), was cooler to sit outside throughout the day. The 3rd room (324) had view of the golf course and desert but was subject to the very strong sun making it too hot to sit there for long.

On arrival a cool welcome drink given whilst you filled out registration forms. A generous tip ($10) acquired us the rooms we requested from the check-in staff - "special arrangements for our party" - worth it for the rooms we got.

Rooms - spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated. Daily cleaning was exceptional (tip around 10 eyptian pounds each day much appreciated) with the beautiful towel arrangements loved by all. If you are staying on half-board basis buy your water and drinks from the local supermarket - a third of the price the hotel charges.

Restaurant - good variety of food, ever so friendly staff - including the chefs who serve at the food stations. Food had a different theme every night - Egyptian evening provided the best tasting food. They also offered a kid's corner dish - usually pasta - but were also willing to make pizza or fries at request - very kind to the children. One of our party was afflicted by the "pharoh's curse" from the second day (just bad luck) which spoilt activities for them for the whole week. But the children and other adults did not suffer. Kitchen hygiene is a priority - hotel even offers tours of it's kitchens to guests - however, whilst we stayed there the head chef was on holiday and perhaps standards had slipped a little. We noticed after reporting the food poisoning all the station chefs were wearing disposable gloves whilst cooking and preparing the food. Hotel manager was sympathetic, but obviously used to dealing with this complaint - but at least it was addressed. No high chairs, but guest relations did say that they could get some for the future. We tipped 10 egyptian pounds every meal which was appreciated.

Pool - spotless - constant cleaning by the staff, attentive bar staff, very helpful pool and towel attendents. Smaller baby pool very warm and possibly heated. Larger pool much colder, but a welcome relief from the burning sun. Would be nice to see some sun shelter over the baby pool like in neighbouring hotels. Eco plus point - all the water used to clean then went to water surrounding plants.

Kid's club - tucked away and much smaller than other neigbouring hotels. Quiet activities offered - lovely staff. Hotel used to older clientel - many without children (some not so tolerant to seeing young children around). But it's great they have this service for families looking for a high-end hotel and facilities for children. Shaded area with swings/slides/climbing frame, along with a cooler in-door area where games and crafts take place. Although this resort is predominately for german tourists, most if not all staff speak English, including the animation team.

Animation - very calm and not pushy with activities. As most guests have older or no children it's a quieter place. Darts/board games/ billiards and table football entertained us enough without disturbing other guests. Evening entertainment was usually caberet style and over by 11pm.

Internet access - very high costs (if you only need a short time combine a shopping trip and go to downtown Hurghada and use an Internet cafe there - it costs less than 50 cents for a couple of hours) - 10 Euro a day - prices the same throughout the other hotels in the area and the internet cafe.

Spa - same prices as you would pay at home - and judging by how empty it was (plus them offering a discount on their services) guests thought it was overpriced too. Why would you pay 20 Euro to use the steam room/sauna/jacuzzi for 1 hour!!!?? Never seen that in any 5 star hotel we've stayed in - that's usually a standard offering. Given that this is one of the most expensive hotels in the area you'd think you'd be able to get a little pampering without breaking the bank any further.

Beach - is about a 5-10 minute walk (with slow children) away - take your pool towels with you. Very shallow waters - beautifully clear. Lovely sand and again very clean. A section of this busy beach reserved for hotel guests. To access beach you have to walk through other hotel complexes - the Star is definitely one of the nicer ones in comparison.

The hotel has a great eco protective attitude - encouraging guests to reuse towels, watering plants with used water, using bar soap in rooms etc. but they also have a lovely scheme whereby if you have come to the hotel for 5 times they will plant a tree in your honour and put a name plaque next to it - a very green and lasting touch which is probably one of the nicest reasons to return year after year. Pehaps we will...

If you're planning a trip to Makadi Bay - the Madinat Makadi complex in particular - then the Star & Spa is by far the best choice for those who are after a slice of luxury. One can expect a 5-star hotel in Egypt to be slightly below those of a similar rating in Europe, but the Star & Spa comes pretty close.

The rooms are a little small, but all spotlessly clean and well looked after. Make sure you opt for one with a pool view - otherwise you'll be looking over nothing more than desert and the golf course.

The hotel is owned by a German company, which naturally means that over 90% of the clientele are German or Russian - in fact, we were the only English couple there for much of the time! This does mean you should expect to be addressed in German initially. The staff are exceptionally friendly (especially those in the pool-side Faryouz Bar) and always look forward to the opportunity to practice their English - we even had a go at some Arabic, which was much appreciated.

Although the hotel's not directly on the beach, it's literally a 3-4 minute wander through one or two of the other Madinat Makadi hotels, and there is a dedicated area of the beach reserved for Star & Spa guests, along with a private beach bar serving drinks and snacks. When wandering through some of the other hotels, you'll begin to appreciate how much the Star & Spa is better than many of the other options in the same resort.

Some advice - unless you're on an all-inclusive basis, nip over to the supermarket just across the road to pick up some bottled water at a 3rd of the price of that served in the hotel. While you're there, pick up some snorkelling equipment (which you could hire from the hotel itself if you'd rather) because the reef just off the beach is a must see.

Food wise, we were pleasantly surprised. Egypt is not renowned for the food quality, but the the buffet dinners served in the main restaurant, the snacks from the pool bar and the Italian pizzeria were all much better than expected with a wide range range of choice.

Madinat Makadi also features a "dine around" option allowing you to pay a supplement to eat in a number of different restaurants around the complex. These vary in cost; due to time we decided to try the two dearest options. The first, an Indian-themed restaurant literally outside the hotel's front door - Amaya - was fantastic, most likely due to the experienced Indian chef. The second, a Thai style eatery closer to the resort centre, was massively disappointing - our advice is to try one of the others instead.

In summary, if looking for a quiet, clean hotel with good service, more than acceptable food and some great reef snorkelling, then this is place for you.

I stayed here with my husband and our 1 year old daughter and we loved everything about this hotel. Our room was spacious with a very nice new bathroom (no bath however) and had a view of the pool, surrounded by palm trees. The room is cleaned every day and you find your bed made with flower petals, which is absolutely lovely. The grounds are well kept and filled with bougainville, hibiscus and palmtrees so it has that exotic feel about it. The food, which is often debatable in Egypt, was of outstanding quality. The buffet has a great variety of food and every day fish, shrimp, beef with vegetables or pasta is prepared freshly while you wait. No lines, no empty trays ever, but maybe this was due to the low season. The waiters provide great service, always paying extra attention to our baby, as did the cooks. The hotel has a kidsclub where she could play and toys we could borrow during our stay. There is an animation team, but not the noisy pushy kind. The beach is a 10 minute walk away, the hotel has its private section with sunbeds, the sea is warm and crystal clear thus perfect for snorkling. Maybe if you want to go dancing and drinking every night this not the place to be, but the adjacent hotels (such as Makadi Sun, Sol y Mar and Beach) have more than enough bars and there is a disco within walking distance. All in all the hotel has a comfortable yet luxurious feel about it, it is quiet and the food is wonderful. We are definitely coming back and will recommend it to anyone, regardless of age.

This is the place you need to go if you want a quite relaxing holiday, rooms are nice and clean, staff is very friendly and they respond to any feedback immediately, the whole place is designed to be wheel chair or baby stroller friendly, food is not the best but it is ok.
I went there 3 times and I am still planning to go more.
Don’t miss the spa when you are there ;-)

What a fantastic holiday we had. Both my wife and I would strongly recommend this hotel to any of our friends, families or young couples. It was our third time to Egypt and by far this was the best hotel we stayed in. The location is great, there are a number of hotels all within this one spacious resort, which is huge! It has loads of shops, cafes and bars and a club as well (this is all on top of the 3 restaurants in the Makadi star). It's just a few mins walk from the beach. Fantastic beach with plenty to do including great snorkelling (we didn't try this). All the staff at this hotel could not do enough for you. We also ate at some of the other restaurants outside of our hotel but within the resort itself and all the restaurants we tried were fantastic with friendly staff. Our hotel was so relaxing and peaceful, our room was clean, stylish and the beds were very comfortable. Our room had a terrace with a table and chairs and a fantastic pool view.We were most impressed with breakfast, poolside food and evening meals. The buffet changed every evening. Although we didn't eat there every night. Only 25 minutes transfer time.
Forgot to mention the weather was perfect too! It never rains there.
