“Good for a week of sun at this time of year”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

Just returned from a week with our teenager in Block 31. Accommodation suited us very well: one king bedded room, a shared bathroom and a twin bedded room with a connecting area. The accommodation is showing its age but was kept very clean by our man (didn't spot his name) and apart from a minor issue one evening with the toilet - which they were quick to fix - the beds were good and comfy and the air con/fan worked well.

Like others on here, suggest you breakfast at the Mexican. It was nearer to us anyway, but much quieter than the main buffet and not such a bun fight. Don't leave your breakfast unguarded outside though while you pop in for another juice or coffee - the birds will have it!

We usually like to sit on the beach but the SRM stretch is quite cramped and almost 100% occupied by Russians. We opted for sunbeds by the pool instead; necessary to get up early to secure them, unfortunately, but we were going to bed early anyway so this wasn't really a problem for us. Plenty of space around the main pool, and quite reasonably quiet! If you want spaced-out sunbeds on a nice, long stretch of beach with snorkelling offshore, look at the Fort Arabesque (wish I had!).

If I'm honest, I was a bit disappointed with the food. We have had much better in the "A la carte" restaurants offered in AIs before (Dominican Republic and Turkey). That said, there was plenty of choice and we never went hungry. Nor did we have any tummy problems. We tried the Asian, Italian, T Bones, Egyptian, Mexican and Greek; enjoyed the Egyptian and Asian best. Don't bother with the Greek: it has all the ambience of a Bulgarian railway station waiting room!

Good food on flights out and back (well done James Martin - if in fact he had anything to do with the meals!) with Thomas Cook, but horribly cramped.

Cannot fault any of the staff: all very friendly and helpful. It is a nice touch that some of the managers, chefs etc come round and ask for feedback on the food, service etc.

Overall a good week at a reasonable price. Would I go back? Probably not - but many do. We did overhear someone saying they were going back for their 18th time!!

Room Tip: Family rooms are certainly worth the extra with a teenage in tow.

Just come back from a weeks holiday here, first time in this part of Egypt. This is a very big resort excellent for families probably the best I've seen as there is everything in one place for the children, a huge pool with slides etc, seperate fenced off baby pool, kids club, basketball/netball court, swing park and somewhere to get food and drinks. It's away from the main pool area and there are other pools within the outer blocks. There's a lovely beach with plenty of beds and all come with windbreakers as it is windy here much needed to cool you down in the 30 degrees heat during the day but can be chilly in the evenings so a cardigan/lightweight jacket may be needed. We were fortunate enough to get beds in the Adult only area pool and would like to thank Mahmood and the bar staff for making our stay an enjoyable and comfortable one. The staff and accommadation were good and the Management staff were excellent. It was a bit hectic in the main buffet area but with 7 other a'la'carte restaurants to choose from there was always an alternative place to eat. The Asian was by far the best. For breakfast you could also eat in the Mexican restaurant which we did and found to be much better. Overall it was a very nice relaxing week in the sun but wouldn't go back unless it was with our children and grandchildren only because we prefer a smaller resort for the 2 of us.

We had never been to Egypt as a family before and decided to travel at a time when the temperature was starting to rise. We travelled on 22nd March and came back on the 5th April. For the first few days the temperature was about 30 degrees but had climbed to 35/36 by the time we left. In July/August it settles somewhere about 45 / 50 which is way too hot for me. We experienced a couple of windy days and arrived in a minor sand storm.

We took Egyptian pounds, American dollars and English pounds. We had to buy a visa each to get in and everywhere it is advertised as 15 US Dollars. We were charged 18 but with a hot irritable queue behind us we didn't argue. Apart from that the US dollars were not needed. They happily took Egyptian and UK pounds. There is a cashpoint in reception which converts US and UK to Egyptian. Feed in a UK or US note and out comes the Egyptian equivalent (minus 1% commission and also a less than good rate). You can also use a card to get cash straight out of this machine.

I have never slept so much. In the end I stopped fighting it and slept when I felt like it. My wife is a mosquito magnet but was only bitten on one night when we went to the Bedouin restaurant which is on the edge of the complex so the little blighters probably blew in from the desert.

Some of the rooms are tired but all are being upgraded. We had one of the older rooms (35301) but it clean, decent size and with a great panoramic view over the site. The room under us was being done as we left so if we had gone a few weeks later we might have had a refreshed room but it really didn't matter.

This is a great hotel and is more of a resort than a hotel. It is very well managed and seems to be run with a firm hand. Everyone is helpful, friendly and keen to help. Everyone speaks English on a scale between Ok and very good. They take pride in their jobs and do them well. We were always being asked for feedback, almost to the point of irritation. There is always some maintenance work being done and the grounds are kept immaculately. We saw very very few insects, maybe a few flies, and the hotel seems to spray every day to avoid problems.

We booked our holiday as an all inclusive with Thomas Cook (TC) but upgraded our room directly with the hotel. This was great for us as not only was it cheaper than booking via TC but the email exchange meant that the hotel knew us and gave us a personal escort to our room.

Check in very smooth. They give you a fruit juice and take your passport while you drink it. Then they return with your room keys and towel cards. We took 2 hours from landing to being in the room which given it is a 45 minute transfer was very fast.

Check out is also very smooth and easy. On the last morning there is a knock at the door and you are asked when you want your bags taken down to reception. There is no pressure to be out bang on time and we were waved and cheered off by the animation team and some of management. By the way, the airport has gates 1-10 in the old part of the airport but if you walk towards these gates you come to the new shiny bit with better seating and a proper burger bar and semi proper pub.

There are four main places to lie in the sun (apart from your balcony if you have one).
a) There is a decent sized heated pool out side blocks 34/35. We were in block 35 so very easy to get to. It has a small slide for small children and it is the only heated pool. The pressure on sunbeds is high and because it is dominated by families with small children the sunbeds get reserved in blocks of 3,4 and in one case 8. Annoying to see towel covered sunbeds at 10 in the morning but even when we were up and about at 6.30 for a trip all of the beds were taken.
b) Larger but unheated pool outside block 10. We migrated here after a few days as it is much quieter and we always found spare sunbeds whatever time we turned up. But it isn,t heated. We felt we could relax more here and there are 4 larger slides for older children and adults.
c) Largest but unheated pool outside the main restaurant. We didn't use this as the water was a tad chilly and it was also the noisiest as there was a constant stream of people going to the restaurants or the bars or passing through to reception.
d) The beach was sandy and always packed. Same sunbed problem as pool a) in the morning but usually a few spare beds in the afternoon. The fish come close to the shore so you can wade in to see them but it is like an aquarium further out within snorkelling range.

There are 8 restaurants. One main one with buffet and 7 themed.
The main restaurant is hectic when it first opens for a meal but is much quieter towards the end of the opening time. There is an emormous amount of choice although it can be a bit esoteric - chilli for breakfast is unusual I would suggest. But there is plenty of it and the waiters are always attentive and refilling your beer/wine or coffee regularly and with a smile.

We ate at all the themed restaurants apart from the Greek and Round the World that was because my wife doesn't like fish which is the main ingredient at the Greek. In order of preference - and this is very subjective so you may have different ideas:
Bedouin - closest to Egyptian food so the best prepared and we loved it. You can eat in the open or in a tent.
Asian - Chinese/Japanese - and we thought very good although limited menu.
T Bone - steak (although not as we know it).
Mexican - I thought this was ok but it was not quite Mexican. The wraps weren't large enough to contain the food !
Italian - Pizza ok but the spaghetti was gloopy. It can't be easy to produce a western dish without western ingredients but didn't enjoy this one.

There was a large animation team (entertainment) that worked very hard throughout the day and evening organising games and a show at 9pm. They were never pushy - you say no and they happily move on. We didn't make any of the shows (see above about sleeping a lot !). This team were the heart of the place as they gave everyone a place to be and a kind of structure to the day. They didn't work on Thursdays and you could see people milling about in the evening touring the various bars.

Plenty of bars dotted around the site. The beer was fine and very welcome in the heat. The wine, in my opinion, was awful although after the first few glasses your palate went numb and it didn't matter. I only managed 3 sips of the red over the two weeks though - awful stuff. You couldn't take a bottle of alchohol back to your room which was a shame as we like to watch the sunset over a bottle. We managed ok with a cold beer though.

We learnt very quickly that this is a male orientated society and that spills over into the hotel. Apart from two women in the Quality Control (Complaints) team and one waitress everyone else was male. Cleaning, bars, waiting at table, kitchen, maintenance, porters, reception were all male. We realised very quickly that any negotiation had to be male on male to be taken seriously. This is the culture and while the hotel tries very hard to do things the western way, it is still a meeting of two different cultures.

Apart from the hotel itself and TC everything is done expecting a barter. There are some shops on site which have been taught to back off and be gentle wit the guests but we still had to barter. You do get sucked into it and I had to be dragged away from one price barter when my wife realised I was arguing over 5p. The shops are basically souvenir shops with a little specialisation such as carpets or leather.

One minor irritation was that the WiFi / internet was slow and patchy in places and we had to sit in reception sometimes to logon.

We did 3 organised trips through TC. We could have arranged these ourselves and probably cheaper but we wanted to be as safe as possible ( we have a 13 year old boy). There has been publicity about the ot air balloon accident and a submarine "incident" is also under investigation so we wanted to reduce any risks.

1) Bedouin trip into the desert - doesn't sound like much we loved this. The guide was knowledgeable and spoke excellent english. I got a testosterone kick out of wearing the Arab scarf covering my head apart from the dark glasses. We saw a mirage and a real Bedouin village although they have modified their way of life to settle down into a semi permanent camp for the tourists.
2) Shopping trip to Herghada - hated this. Apart from one large brightly lit fixed price shop it was dark and gloomy and the much hyped shoping mall was dark with a security guard at the entrance. We realised what the hotel was protecting us from as we were frequently approached and generally hassled to go into yet another jewelry shop. We spent the time in a well lit bar until collection time. The more adventurous would probably get more out of this than we did but not a relaxed experience.
3) Trip to Mayhma beach. It really does look like paradise, was hot, lots of good snorkelling and we saw a pod of about 6 dolphins with one pup. It wasn't just a glimpse but they gave us a show, swimming under the boat and jumping out of the water. Saw them on the way back as well but they weren't in the mood for a visitors so did a couple of leaps out of the water the disappeared. I didn't expect to enjoy this but a great day.

Some miscellaneous bits.
1) The staff get tips in english coins sometimes and you may be asked to convert a pile of £1 coins to a note so that the Egyptian bank will accept them. We had no problem with this in the hotel but DON'T do this outside. They just want to see where your wallet is and anything could happen after that. We were approached twice on the shopping trip and declined.
2) If you arrange your own trip into town there are two things you should never say to the taxi driver - "take me shopping" or "take me downtown". In both cases you will probably end up in the shop of a relative or close friend and will have a very tricky job getting away without buying something.
3) We were warned off a visit to Dolphin World as we were told they do not treat the dolphins well. As I say, we didn't go so I can't vouch for how true that is.
4) Always always be polite and smile - sorry if preaching to the converted but the English are well received in the hotel and around the country because we say please and thank you and smile and laugh. This is just human nature and the staff are too well trained to show irritation but the number of times we winced when someone would just barge to the front of a queue, hold up three fingers and shout "beer".

So in summary, a great holiday, a great hotel and we will be going back !!

Sorry that this review is a bit late..... My partner and I stayed at this wonderful resort Feb 19th until March 5th. It was our first time to Egypt and we were a little unsure what to expect. Friends had been to Sharm and had not enjoyed it, but luckily for us we chose Hurghada for our first time and, more importantly, because of all the fabulous recommendations on Tripadvisor from previous guests, we chose the Sunrise Royal Makadi.

On arrival it was dark and breezy with patio heaters outside. We were worried that we were going to be in for a chilly fortnight, but, happily, we were wrong. The next day, we woke to sunshine and fab temperatures that rose each day. By the end of the first week we had a tan and were able to sit outside in the evenings without cardigans/jackets.

The complex is stunning - beautiful lush gardens and lovely pools, leading out to a fabulous beach with plenty of sunbeds. All areas of this hotel are spotless. There are hand gel dispensers outside all eating areas and despite warnings from friends that we would have bad tummys, we can honestly say that we did not suffer from this problem at all, which only proves how clean the Sunrise is!

The pools were quite chilly at this time of year, and although there are two heated pools, we preferred to stay on the beach every day. We loved the clear water, the golden sand, and enjoyed walking along the beach and seeing what types of fish we could spot from the piers further along from our hotel.

The food here is really good. The main restaurant offers plenty of choice for everyone, really tasty and fresh - I have never seen so many wonderful pastries at breakfast time! The a la carte restaurants are absolutely lovely (there are 7 of them). Our favourites were the Asian and the Bedouin, although they all offered really gorgeous food. It was easy to book in and we could go as many times as we liked. Fantastic!

Besides the lovely clean surroundings, the marvellous food and facilities and wonderful weather – the best thing about this hotel is the fantastic team of staff that work here – they are all a credit to the hotel. We have never met such lovely, friendly and genuinely helpful people, in any of the places that we have travelled to. Everybody we met was pleasant, polite and sincere in wanting to know if we were having a good time and that everything was to our satisfaction. Our housekeeper was lovely. We were in block 26 and he kept our room spotless. The waiters in the main restaurant were lovely and very attentive. The service in both there and the a la carte restaurants was spot on. When one of us didn’t particularly like one of the dishes at one of the a la carte restaurants, our waiter went out of his way to get us a different meal to replace it as he “wanted to make us happy”. We were taken aback at such helpfulness. Each evening we drank in the lobby bar and the service from Ahmed Saied and Mostafa Saied was great. They are really lovely, friendly guys and they work incredibly hard. They always remembered our drinks and chatted with us. We were sorry to say goodbye.

Khaled, the Thomas Cook Rep, is extremely helpful. He gave us good advice when we spoke to him and unlike other holiday reps we had encountered, he was not pushy and was a genuinely nice guy. He is a credit to Thomas Cook.

We were impressed that the managers are constantly visible throughout the day, checking things are okay and taking time to chat to their guests, something we had not seen anywhere else before. It is evident that they want to ensure that their guests are having a good time. On the day before we were leaving Mr Hashem Lofty and Mr Osama the Entertainment Manager, invited us to the Manager’s dinner the following day, but as we were leaving we were unable to attend. It was a pity, as we would have loved to have gone. It was lovely to be asked.

We have to give a special mention and thank you to the Sunrise’s fabulous Entertainment Team. They are all so lovely and funny, and work constantly from morning until late at night. They really helped to make our holiday special (even though we didn’t take part in any of the activities as we were “too lazy” ha ha). A special thanks to the lovely John, Bob, Kano, Mido and Olga. All would come and say hello each day and chat to us and, even though we didn’t participate, it was fun to watch the shows and others taking part.

When we left I cried, as all the Entertainment Team, staff and Managers all came out so say goodbye to the people who were leaving. It was very emotional to drive away in the coach with everyone waving and to see that a lot of the staff were themselves upset to be waving goodbye. It is a lovely touch and shows how much the Sunrise Team value and care about their guests.

We felt we had made friends and cannot wait to return. We really loved our holiday and we cannot recommend this hotel enough. We now understand why so many people are repeat guests.

Thank you Sunrise Royal Makadi for a wonderful two weeks, we miss you all.

A little bit late but better late then never !!

Mohamed Ali Guest Relations well what can i say we have been coming to this hotel for a fair few years now, twice a year and he always goes that extra mile to make sure we have a fabulous holiday. He is a massive credit to this hotel and works none stop making sure all guests are happy.

We arrived on 24th Dec 2012 and quickly got ready for our Xmas Eve Gala. WOW what a great night it was and all the staff had worked tremendously hard to put on a fantastic night of food, surroundings and atmosphere. Chef Ayman and Chef Mohamed and the rest of the chefs and kitchen staff put on a massive display of food, we didn't know where to start first and the different choices was fab. New Years Eves Gala was much the same and of a fantastic standard. A big thank you to Mr Hashem Lotfy who sorted us out a great table for the evenings event.

The hotel has a new manager Mr Said who always said hello and asked how we were, he was making a lot of changes whilst we where there and we are looking forward to our next visit this month to see how things have again improved. Mr Abdelrahman assistant front office manager met us when we arrived and when ever he saw us he spoke to us and he also helped with our departure. Mr Salah Mahdy, night manager was also always available if we had a problem.

This is a fabulous hotel with 7 a la carte restaurants that you can use every night of your holidays, all the food in all of them is wonderful. A special thank you to Chef Ahmed Salem Mansiur of the Mexican for making us the hot wings they where fantastic. You can also get Breakfast in the Mexican. The main Buffet restaurant also has lots of choice of food for Breakfast, lunch and Evening. You can get pizza and other snacks for lunch at the Pagola Bar or the family pool at what becomes the Steakhouse on a night time.

There are plenty of swimming pools and sunbeds and the beach and snorkeling are good but the best snorkeling is at the hotel next door The Fort Arabesque.

We love this hotel and have made many wonderful friends over the years and to us it is most definitely our 2nd home !! So please book and go with an open mind a 5* Europe hotel is not a 5* Egyptian hotel but for value for money and the service and staff make it 5* plus.

A massive thank you to everybody at the hotel and we will see you all very soon. Sarah & Jim

Food is varied and of a high standard. All areas of hotel are spotless. Lots to do in the hotel. great value for the money we paid

small negative - only 2 pools heated which lead to bed hogging.

overall highly recommeded for families.
