“A home away from home!”
Reviewed February 5, 2012

I've just got back after spending 12 days in Sunrise Royal Makadi Resort and Spa and can't wait to go back!! Was worried 12 days might be too long, but would have happily stayed another week or two!

The staff, in particular the animation team, were beyond fantastic! They all went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and almost like celebrities! Have to name Momo, Timo, Mido, Osama and YoYo in particular for taking so much time out to ensure we were always enjoying ourselves and getting us to participate in as many activities as poss - there are a number of exercise/dance/relaxation classes throughout the day, and the animation team put together incredible shows in the evening, my personal favourite being the cobra show and the comedy night.

The staff in the restaurants would say hello and stop to speak every time they saw us making us always feel very welcome. The chef also made a special dessert for me an a friend - its those little touches which added to the specialness of the holiday. In particular I have to mention Taha for being absolutely funny every single night at dinner and having us in stitches. He provided us with some of the best moments of the entire holiday!:-) Also Mohsin the shisha guy would keep us entertained each evening with his singing, smile and dancing - a real joy each evening.

The only downside of the resort is the spa. We booked 4 massages (2 x Egyptian, hot stone and aromatherapy). It felt as though the ladies giving the massage had no idea what they were doing. During the hot stone massage, they were unable to keep hold of the stones and these would slip out of their hands every few minutes. The staff really need to be trained and I wouldn't recommend the massages. Also, we were continually offended by Ahmed the lifeguard. Initially he had been very friendly, but as soon as I rejected his offer for a drink, he became extremely rude with us with his passing comments and would not help with moving the sunloungers etc even though he was continually happy to do this for the other guests.

Despite these downsides, I would still strongly recommend this hotel as I have had the best 12 days, and again would say this has got to be due to the friendly and incredibly warm staff at the resort. The location is stunning and the resort is simply beautiful! I can't wait to go back!

Just returned from a 2 week holiday on 3 Feb 2012 and although my wife and I thought this was cheap and cheerful it turned out to be a nice relaxing holiday with good restaurants, very helpful staff and good overall facilities.

The initial arrival is disorganised and expect to wait up to 1hr before being allocated a room. The rooms are basic but adequate in simple Egyptian styles and initially the resort is confusing with 37 blocks of apartments and is as big as many UK villages. The initial appartment we were allocated lacked any good outlook so after complaining the front of house manager (Hasem) offered a further appartment before we agreed to upgrade for an additional cost but worth it over the 2 weeks.

TOP TIP - If your not on ultra AI through Thomas Cook, make sure you are and if this means paying for it, do it ! this will give access to the restaurants, sauna, jacuzzi even a free hair cut at the salon etc.

Pro's
7 al a carte restaurants, try them all and the Asian, Itallian & Bedouin are all very authentic with excellent food choices served.
The beach front location and in particular the VIP adult pool where it was relaxing and the staff (Saleh, absolute top barmen very attentive and always ensuring a drink was brought to me and Mohamed known as Maradona the towel man who had my sunbeds reserved each day ) both were absolutely superb!
Outside snack bars for pizzas and burgers were handy at lunch and eating outside for breakfast was lovely.

Con's
The branded drinks (4 spirits) were misleading and only served in the lobby bar.
Mikadi Bay is well away from Hurghada and apart from other hotels not much to do (I was after a couple of bars etc.)
The International Buffet was merely a large canteen and I would have suicidal if I had to eat in there for 2 weeks (we enjoyed al a carte for all but the 1st night of arrival)
The lack of small notes being made available from the reception or cashier allowing you to tip the staff.
Accept there will be lots of eastern europeans being greedy (hence avoid the buffet) and rude and overrunning the night club open till 03:00.

Overall - Very good value for money (ensure you are ultra AI) but the hotel is more 4* when compared to 5* Egyptian hotels I've stayed in. Very clean with very helpful staff but in a rather limited location.

Room Tip: Request a room in block 16 or 17 for easy access to pools, beaches reastaurants etc.

A fantastic time we had here for relaxation and re-charging our batteries and some winter sunshine thrown in too. The hotel was clean and the room we were in was very comfortable and very clean. Top marks to housekeeping. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We enjoyed dining in the a la carte restaurants and in the main buffet restaurant.... totally spoiled for choice. Entertainment was good as was the beach and pool, lots of available sunbeds which is a bonus. Went for a massage in the spa absolutely amazing... certainly recommended. On the whole this was a fabulous holiday in a fabulous location being cared for by fabulous staff. Will definately be going back, looking at the brochures for April..can't wait!

Following items in today’s newspapers, the following is a genuine and honest review:

Sunrise Royal Makadi Resort,
Makadi Bay, Egypt.
13 – 27th January, 2012.

We bought this holiday from Thomas Cook (p.68 of their brochure) and were looking forward to a 5 Star All Inclusive experience with the promised 7 al la carte restaurants etc. On arrival we were told our’s was the “Soft” All inclusive, which excluded free access to the a la carte restaurants, Spa discount voucher and international drinks. Mohammed, the Thomas Cook rep., was only interested in selling excursions, otherwise useless/lazy. It was only due to our own persistence and the action of our superb Travel Agent back in the UK that we were upgraded to the VIP/Ultra that we had bought from the Thomas Cook brochure. Even so we lost the first four days of what we had paid for. We were lucky. Numerous other people were refused an upgrade and experienced a very mediocre holiday.

“You can’t have the full all inclusive unless it says so on your Ticket."
“Erm , it does look here!”
“But if you look in the small print on the last page of the confirmation of booking, that you were sent after you paid, it says you haven’t.” etc.

Talk of legal action was in the air around us for our entire stay.…
About 50 people were not very happy holidaymakers.
I anticipate seeing it all on Watch Dog TV.

Regarding the resort:-

The gardens were well established and maintained, indicating the site had been here for some time. This was made evident by the sunk or cracked/crumbling paving suggesting the hotel had been upgraded on an old existing site. Our accommodation was in Block 10 and comments about accommodation relate to this. Including woken every morning at sun up by barking dogs.

As we have always found during at least ten holidays in Egypt, the staff were helpful, friendly and went out of their way to look after the guests.

From the first Monday through Saturday we were SCUBA diving with Divers Lodge in Hurghada (a much better deal than offered locally by the Rep) and requested lunch boxes. On a day boat with divers from at least two other hotels it was embarrassingly obvious that we had the most impoverished picnic!! Oh… to have stayed where the Russian divers were from!!

The first week of our stay there was a chilly wind blowing off of the land, making it too cold to sit outside. Considering the number of guests, the provision of indoor seating was woefully inadequate. On a few occasions people nearly came to blows.

The main buffet restaurant had all the charm of a works canteen/St. Pancras Station in the rush hour. Badly laid out, not enough chefs, especially on the breakfast omelette service etc. Levels of hygiene were OK but the meals were aimed at the Russian/Eastern European guests, ie. Cream of potato soup, cabbage soup, borscht soup, etc.

The accommodation: - Housekeeping was excellent. The fridge was restocked with bottled water and soft drinks daily when the sheets and towels were changed. However, like the resort as a whole, it was all very chipped and tired. In need of refurbishment. The bathroom was badly laid out and the shower unit had been repaired with a screw and was therefore unadjustable.
Water pressure was feeble. But our complaint that the sink didn’t drain was actioned within twenty minutes.

Swimming pools: Only the pool near the reception was heated and it didn’t feel by much. It was the same temperature as the sea we were SCUBA diving in. Our dive computers said so. The sun beds were the type that you could not lay flat but were ideal for fabricating wind breaks. So most people headed for the beach, with lay flat sun beds and out of the wind.

The Beach: The Beach Bar only served drinks in tiny glasses – no idea why.

The whole beach was laid out with fixed wooden sun shades. So many that it was difficult to find a sunbed that wasn’t in shadow. The sun beds along the sea’s edge, the only ones you could guarantee unobstructed sun, were reserved with towels and scarves etc before first light, or maybe on the previous night. We were at breakfast at 6:30am to go diving and the towels were there then – so who knows. Despite the hotel policy of ‘We remove all unattended towels before 10am and take them to Reception’, this was never done.

A La Carte Restaurants:

We tried the Mediterranean (our first view of recognisable meat), Italian (indigestible semi-raw pizza with a smear of tomato sauce and cheese, two small slices of mushroom and a thin sliver of pepperoni), Asian (scrumptious), Greek (very disappointing and you needed to take a torch with you to see what you were eating), and Steak House (best meal of the holiday, but outside and required warm clothes in addition to the infrared heaters provided.).

The Egyptian beer and wine were absolutely fine and we enjoyed both although we would have preferred Sakara rather than Luxor beer. The ‘five international brands of spirits’ were often absent after 21:00 hours, apart from some vodka and the Scottish whiskey which was being provided for the Irish Coffees…….

We found that taking breakfast and lunch in the ‘Around The World’ restaurant meant you missed the fight for tables and food.

A good point was the hand sanitizer dispensers at the entrance of the main canteen/restaurant and ‘Around The World’ restaurant. Experience from observing people we have holidayed with indicate that most upset stomachs are not due to the food but bad personal hygiene.

Was it a bad holiday? … NO …
Would we go again to this hotel? … NO ….

We found The Sentido Crystal Bay in Hurghada where we stayed last year a vastly superior 5 star and about the same price.

I stayed here for a week with my sister for a relaxing break without the kids, on an all inclusive package. The only slight niggle was the checking in procedure as this takes about 20-30mins - however, it was more to do with Thomas Cook than the hotel and was the only thing I found to complain about! The food here is excellent - 7 a la carte restaurants as well as the main buffet restaurant, all part of the package, so we could choose a different one every night! All the staff are very friendly and helpful. The whole hotel was spotless, the rooms were very comfy with a tv and fridge. Beach was brilliant, lots of sunbeds so never had to fight for one. And the 8 swimming pools were amazing - unfortunately too cold to try all of them, but they looked great. I can't emphasise enough how great this hotel is - particularly for families. We will definitely be going back and taking the whole family this time! And if you decide to go, book some massages in the spa, they're heavenly.
