“Fantastic hotel - the jewel of Hurghada”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2013

The Makadi Spa is a wonderful hotel approx. 40mins from Hurghada airport. I had my reservations about going to Egypt (even though I had been numerous times). We were nervous about safety with all that has been reported in the news. We couldn't be further wrong, from the moment Andrew (the fantastic representative of Red Sea Holidays) met us at the airport, to the excursions we did - not once did we feel anything but welcomed and safe. The hotel was only 40% full, great for us, but sad for the Egyptian tourism.
The hotel itself had warned us that there would be a bit of building work, but we didn't hear it at all. Apparently soon some of the suites will also feature private pools and Jacuzzi's for approx. 20 euros a week (how indulgent!). Everything from the food, attentiveness and friendliness off staff, to the cleanliness, facilities and location - was simply "perfect". A wonderful winter get away, and whilst we only landed 48hrs ago, plan to return next year with family. Our favourite restaurant was the oriental, but do make your dinner reservations for the restaurants between 3pm - 6pm. The Thai restaurant at the Makadi Palace was also fabulous. Evening entertainment was incredibly low key, very chilled out, so if you do fancy a bit more lively, the Makadi Palace had a party by the pool each night. The weather for late November is still in the high 20s, and the sea is warmer than the pools with the most amazing snorkelling off a reef - you do need to wear shoes as it can be rocky, but there is a jetty. The snorkelling was far better than the Great Barrier Reef, and just as good as the Maldives, it was like sticking your head in an aquarium. We went on the Barawaya excursion booked through Red Sea Holidays, it was a long and fun filled day, quad biking, Jeep safari, camel rides, tea with the Bedouins (and learning about the tribe traditions) through to dinner and folklore show. Again thoroughly recommend it.
Tips: take British pounds or Egyptian pounds. We took US dollars, and didn't them. Tip small but often, don't wait until the end of the holiday. Don't just think about it, book it!

Room Tip: All rooms are suites, and quiet, peaceful and luxurious - however the sun goes down early around the...

It could be so much better

Good hotel with great food and fantastic staff. Asian was our favourite !

There are a few things that have changed since our last visit some for the better some not so good

New buffet restaurant is very good with wide variety on offer ranging from fresh cooked steak to Chinese and Indian cuisine which was all very tasty,
New bar area has opened but they have made another bar a pay bar, yes even if your all inclusive,
Entertainment is a joke with just three nights a week of anything.
Violin and piano one night ...... A bomb threat couldn't have cleared the room quicker...lol
A guitarist who was really good, but the staff kept stopping him because people are sleeping, at 10pm
Went back to see the show on the third night and it was violin again, quick exit ..........

Wifi is only available in the lobby, it would have been good to have it in the rooms or outside areas even if chargeable

Rooms are lovely and kept spotlessly clean each day, another nice to have would be tea making facilities in the room, beer, coke or water does not make for a good start of the day

Free bus service into Hurghada main town makes an interesting change from the monotony of lying by the pool all day but make sure your there at the prescribed leaving time there is no leeway it just goes
Pool is absolutely freezing but the sea is pleasant with loads of fish over the coral, very safe but take sea shoes as it's like razors to walk over

I would assess this as a good chill out hotel for a week but after two it's a bore.
If you have iPad or phone I would recommend getting a newspaper app.... You won't see a paper of magazine, some people may like that but not for for me!

We booked direct with Red Sea Holidays and were not disappointed with anything about this hotel. We had been to another Hotel in Makadi Bay previously and really enjoyed the beach location and fantastic snorkelling in the resort. We deliberately chose the Spa because it is adults only and looked a step change better than all the other hotels. We were right - the junior suite was lovely, the pool area very swish, the infinity pool very classy. All the restaurants in the Spa were very good, the entertainment is very low key in the Spa , but if you want something more lively just walk round to the sister hotels for live music in the evening. I can't wait to go again next Winter - I just hope the winter flights from Birmingham to Hurghada continue in future as Thompson seem to change their mind every year about Midland Flights to this part of the Red Sea

We stayed last week of october last year and loved it so returned again october 2013 but found quite a few changes that for us took the wow factor away. The hotel was fab, staff excellent especially Ibrahem Azez asst manager at the tapas bar. Hotel quiet so no rush for sun beds in the morning. We were allocated the same room as last year which again was great as it over looked pool and beach. The restaurants were the same but steak one has gone really down hill with no steaks! Lunch time offerings were poor and slim pickings so we went off site to the sunwing for buffet which was much better. Again without a doubt Asia was excellent along with the garden bar for pre drinks and tapas for after drinks as open till 12 which is the last AI bar open.
The AI bar last year which is the big circular one you can see on the pictures overlooking the pool is no longer an AI bar which is a shame as its the best one they had! Because of that we didnt use it but no one else did either?... New breakfast area which is lovely but food very limited so again went to sun-wing for breakfast! Also use to get a mini bar and nibbles left in your room late pm this is no more and you are not allowed to take drinks back to your room! What is the point in having a balcony with a view! None the less still the best hotel we have stayed at in all of Egypt and we have stayed in many. Would we go back not sure lost a few nice touches that made it special.

Room Tip: Book a room with even numbers as all facing the pool/beach example we were 6214. Take small Egyptian...

We've just returned from a 2 week stay at the Makadi Spa. Previously we had stayed 5 times next door at Makadi Palace but we have to say that although the Palace is great the Spa is another step up. The staff and management were superb and made us feel special. We would particularly like to thank Gerard Hotel mgr), Mohamed (Drinks beverages mgr) & Mahmoud (pool boy at Infinity bar) for looking after us.

The Hotel is well maintained, rooms serviced everyday and the food was excellent. The hotel mainly consists of Brits & Germans (inc Scandinavian countries) and very few Russians. We were able to use all the restaurants at the other Red Sea Hotels and we counted 27 in total.

We can't really complain about anything and are already committed to returning next year. This is a well run hotel and I like the fact that no children are allowed. This seems to make it more relaxing. The only advise I can give to the Hotel management is to keep the far eastern Europeans to an absolute minimum (you know who I'm talking about).

Thanks again and we'll hopefully see you next year!

Makadi Spa

ROOMS

Our room was lovely, no sea view but we're not fussed about that. The room and balcony were enormous with a walk in wardrobe, king sized bed, separate lounge area with a 50" HDTV (Usual foreign channels so not much point in watching if you only speak English) mini bat stocked with water, beer and soft drinks - Pepsi, Tango and Sprite. The shower is intermittent very very hot to lukewarm. The balcony/terrace was huge with a sofa and coffee table, two chairs with foot stools, a dining table with another two chairs and room for plenty more! There are no ironing or hot drinks facilities in the room which is quite strange for a 5* establishment.

The air conditioning really is very noisy and smells very damp and mouldy. We switched to turning off the air con and sleeping with the doors open.

The room service man introduced himself on day one and must be in and out of the room 5 times a day, every time we returned to the room he had been in, drawing curtains or delivering towels, probably looking for tips?

POOLS

Absolutely freezing, the sea was warmer. I attempted to get in several times but miserably failed! The pools were practically empty (from swimmers) all day, it was just too cold and even the brave could only last a few minutes! The pools look beautiful so this was a real let down.

We asked at reception and were told the pool heater is switched on 15th November, a few days later there was no improvement so we asked at reception again and were told around 20th November. I doubt they will be on at all as the hotel staff don't seem to care if the pools are completely empty.

Lots of people were complaining but this appeared to fall on deaf ears.

FOOD

If you like food and appreciate a nice meal, Egypt is not for you! Edible, that's all!

Breakfast is possibly the worst offering of the day. Sloppy scrambled egg, fried egg, hard boiled egg and toast. Porridge that looks very watery, croissants and fruit. There is a juice station where you can squeeze your own fruit which was popular but nowhere to wash your hands when covered in sticky fruit juice. There were utensils and food left out amongst the breakfast items from the previous evening buffet which is quite off putting and messy.

Dinner is bearable, my partner had steak which was OK and I had salmon which was been carved directly from the fish that had been oven baked with a salt crust. The jacket potatoes were nice and fluffy. This was hit and miss, some evenings were much better or worse than the others.

The Asian restaurant was good, but probably only in comparison to the rest of the food we'd been eating, we would call it acceptable in the UK for an Asian restaurant but not good. The waiter was attentive and regularly brought refilled drinks.

I enjoyed the Egyptian restaurant Tam Tam more than my partner, the all inclusive menu is limited. We were given a mezze style starter which was actually quite nice the breads were good with a nice sesame purée dip. We both chose the moussaka (spelt differently) for main which was basically ratatouille with rice, I thought it was OK but very bland. We stopped off at the buffet restaurant on our way back to our room for a bowl of pasta!

We had a BBQ lunch at the Grand Makadi, this was actually OK. The meat from the BBQ was cooked nicely and was well flavoured.

We tried the Makadi Palace for lunch, this was poor. I had some cauliflower cheese which was ok, with mashed potato that resembled porridge and sliced carrots. I'd also picked up a jacket potato, that they'd obviously forgotten to cook as I couldn't even cut into it. My partner went to the BBQ and was told to return in 5 minutes. He went back and was given some very over cooked and dry chicken skewers.

TRIPS

We attended the Red Sea Holidays welcome meeting on the first morning and were informed of the trips. They all seemed very expensive so we used Google to locate a much cheaper website. - beware, they say pick up from your hotel in Hurghada, Makadi Bay is not classed as Hurghada for transport so we were charged an additional £15 for transport. This still worked out ok. I will write a separate review on the trips we went on.

CONCLUSION

I wouldn't recommend staying here. There is no spa. The food is poor, entertainment is non existent and the unheated pools are a real letdown. Red Sea holidays really need to do something here, and quickly! They have a beautiful hotel building but that is all. A real shame.

Good points:
Rooms are very good
Pool is large
Styling is very tasteful

Bad points:

The swimming pool was very very cold. A large number of people complained all week that the pool was too cold to use. They said they would turn the heating on but never did. With about 100 people sitting around the pool every day we saw 2 people all week go into the main pool to swim. Completely unusable. The sea was like a warm bath in comparison. Eventually spoke to the manager who acknowledged everyone had been complaining but wouldn't agree to turn the heating on.

Spa: closed all week

Jacuzzi: closed all week

The food and drink. Having lived abroad for a significant part of my life and being an airline pilot, I have stayed in more hotels than I can possibly remember. The food here is worst food I've ever come across, in any country, anywhere in the world, in any establishment producing food. We ate at the other hotels.
The drink... Local cheap spirits, flat tonic/coke out of bottles, sometimes ice sometimes not. Cocktails made by people who don't drink cocktails. Not nice. Had to stick to Egyptian wine which was actually quite pleasant, and beer.

As a holiday like this is mostly about relaxing by the pool and eating and drinking I would suggest booking somewhere else.
