Reviewed October 28, 2012

I have recently returned from a 7 night stay at the Makadi Spa, from the 19th to the 26th October 2012 as a single traveller. The Reception area was elegant and cool with water features and nice décor, a great entrance to the hotel. My room, 6355, a Junior Suite, was great with a pool and sea view and large balcony. The suite was large with a king size bed, lounge area with L shape sofa and plasma TV and a massive bathroom. The pool area was spacious with lots empty sun beds so no need to be up at 6.00am, the infinity pool was lovely if not a little cold when you first got in, the main pool appeared slightly warmer but the infinity pool had great views to the Red Sea. Beach towels are provided in your room upon arrival. Breakfast was very good; a great range in a lovely setting at the Cove Restaurant, best time to go is 7.30am, early I know but a lovely part of the day not to be missed. The hotel had plenty of Restaurants which you booked in Reception from 3.00pm, I always got the Restaurant I requested, the Steak and Seafood Restaurants are nice as you can sit outside but you have to eat at 7.30pm, the Asian Restaurant was good too, there are also restaurants in the Makadi Mall, worth a try. At lunch time The View, Tapas Restaurant and the Pool Bar are good places to eat depending what you want but you can use the restaurants at the Palace or Grand next door. The guys in the main bar are great and made me feel really welcome; the pool bar was good too with service to your sunbed. Overall a lovely hotel, well worth 5 star rating, will recommend to anyone so much so my sister fly’s out on Friday 2nd November, wish I was going back.

Room Tip: Only half the rooms face the pool as the hotel is a V shape with the pool in the centre, request a p...

We had never been to Egypt before, and my wife had seen this hotel so after looking at the reviews on here,( the good and the bad) we decided we'd give it a try as the bad reviews seemed to be the minority. We usually do our holidays on a private villa self catering basis, but wanted to be looked after and just chill out by the pool.
When this hotel is finished, (as there is still building work going on and yes we did hear it very occasionally, but it was not intrusive and lasted no more than minutes at a time) you will be paying a lot more for staying there, the hotel itself is very nice, very clean and looks stunning at night from the front and at the back where the infinity pool is with the lighting doing a great job.
The staff, all of the staff, are friendly, courteous and genuinely want to look after you, within a few days the ones who you see each day are more like friends than people who are working in a hotel where you are staying. You even have Barack Obama (Esam) working behind the main bar, Fasel at the infinity bar and many others who want you to enjoy your stay. It's true the pools are not the warmest, but when it's 30' celcius I dont want a bath.
The food during our stay ranged from being acceptable in the other hotels to excellent (the steak restaurant being excellent) the view restaurant and Asian and Chinese also very good. .
Being adult only, this was enforced, and other hotel guests not allowed in, our stay was peaceful and relaxing, my only real gripe was the excursion to Luxor and that was the bus that we travelled in was not very good, (this was not down to the hotel itself) and the street vendors who are also at the sights as well, who try to corner you and keep on tryong to sell you goods, they would do better if thet didn't hassle you which they do. Again the hotel have no control over this.
So after all that would we recommend the Makadi Spa, most certainly, we plan to book again for next year. Thanks to all the staff at Makadi Spa we had a great holiday.

We returned from the Spa a week ago. Here's our opinion.

Arrival - everything went smoothly at the reception where we were offered a glass on wine and a cold towel. Haytham had our room key cards ready in 5 minutes and showed us round the hotel - we were impressed right away.

Room - spacious, clean, wonderfully furnished. It was cleaned every day, we got flowers and nice decorations on the (huge) bed. The mini bar was always full.

Pool area - there are enough sunloungers for everybody. Some were reserved quite early in the morning but I never felt like getting up to reserve - there are so many beautiful spots around the pools that you'll definitely find something you like. The water is not really warm but it disturbed us like the first 5 seconds the first time we went in. It didn't disturb once after that. There were some people who moaned about the water but you'll always find such people. We found it great to cool down! And the view is just beyond words... All in all really relaxing and great atmosphere!

Restaurants and bars - we had our breakfast in the View once, the next day in moved to the Cove (just opened then). There's no view of the sea but there's lots of green which we liked a lot. We never sat insided but it was nice and cool.
For lunch we went to the View and the Tapas bar twice. Quite a number of people seem not to like the Tapas, but we liked it. It doesn't have a great location, as outside you are not really protected from the sun and inside it's too dark and cold. We sat outside nevertheless and really enjoyed the grilled beef cubes with herbs and olives. They served nice tenderloin steak in the View which we liked more than the steak in the Steak House. We once went to Makadi Palace for buffet lunch but it was ways too noisy and hectic so we quickly returned to the Spa.
We went to the Asian, the Mariscos and the Steak House for dinner. We especially liked Mariscos and the Asian. Everywhere there's a choice of 4-5 appetizers, the same for soups and main courses - we found it enough choice for one week. We also tried the Thai Garden next door but didn't like it at all since it reminded more of an conveyor belt than a quiet restaurant and we got a dessert even though we hadn't orederd one at all.

Service - for everybody who complained about the service, well, we didn't have to wait long for anything and we always had quick service and friendly waiters. Perhaps it's also the way you treat people.

The beach - it really is difficult to get into the sea. We went in in front of the Sunwing as it is sandier there.

Concerning tips - we NEVER felt like someone was expecting a tip. We just saw happy and grateful faces when we tipped. I think it's a natural thing to tip, especially in Egypt. So we had enough one dollar notes with us. DO NOT give them any coins!!!! It's moeny they CANNOT use.

Negative - the only thing I'd mention is the construction work going on. We heard it well around the pool area. They were building the main restaurant (where they'll have buffet) and the jacuzzi suites which are just too close to the pool, so we heard the drilling. Well, there's nothing they can do about the noise since they have to finish the hotel! We were disturbed occasionally, but I don't really complain as we knew about the building work when we booked. I suppose there are weeks when you hear more and weeks when you hear less. Just be ready to have a week with more noise as it can happen.

Finally I'd like to mention a couple of people who made our holiday nicer still -
Nageh - thanks for all the drinks you served us at the pool. You were always there and attentive!
Fesal - my sunglasses have never been cleaner. You're the best!
Ibrahim - thanks for remembering what we drink for breakfast after seeing us only once! Thank you for your genuine smiles.
Haytham - thank you for your friendliness!
Medhad - we really enjoyed your jokes. You're so funny! It was always nice to see you.
Staff at Mariscos - so friendly and attentive!

Really, I'd go back tomorrow if I could.

I refer to Clint Eastwood in Deadpool about opinions and everyone having one...so here's my opinion. The Makadi Spa genuinely has a lot to offer, that said, there are some issues that need to be addressed. So let's get the issues out of the way...

The Tapas Bar is shocking...cold, bland food that took too long to arrive and believe me - you will be disappointed, but I think the management will be addressing shortly, if the other reviews are anything to go by...and they are very pro-active!!!

Food temperature - this tended to be a bit hit and miss - the Infinity bar served 'snacks' at lunchtime and the 2 times we used it, we were only ever served luke warm food and one serving of raw beef burger...but it wasn't just the Infinity Bar that suffered this issue, we did have other 'cool' meals at the Steak restaurant as well.

Building works - but in their defence - we did know about it and to be honest - it wasn't too invasive...but it looks like there will be building works for some time to come, so be warned.

And that it for me on the main issues. The General Manager Gerard (apologies if I've spelt this wrong) was very approachable, attentive and very pro-active. The Makadi Spa is going to be lovely, once the staff is at full capacity, the building works have been completed and the issues on food temperature have been sorted... it really is a lovely place to stay, but standards all round need to be improved if it really is going to have the true 5 Star feel…and it won’t take much to bring it up to spec.

My thanks go out to a couple people though, who really did make the stay at the Makadi Spa special, Mohamed in the Garden Bar...Lovely cocktails and he really looks after you. Ibrahim in the Cove...thank you for starting our mornings so well for the 2 weeks we stayed. Thank you to the cleaning teams as well - they did a great job and it's amazing what creations can be made with a bed runner :0).

This traveller would return to the Makadi Spa…I wish Gerard and his team well over the next couple of years…we’ll see you in 2014!!!

So in summary:

The Good
Asian Restaurant

The Bad
The Tapas Bar

The Ugly
The building works

After 3 weeks at this hotel i feel this is a fair appraisal. I read The reviews of the hotel before we went and they where not good, however, at the managers welcome party he openly apologised for the adverse comments on "trip advisor" and assured us that he and his team was doing everthing they could to rectify the issues raised. To be fair he was very pro-active the whole time we were there. We saw him every day speaking to guests and dealing with any issues they had, most being very trivial.
Yes there is building work going on but noise levels where completely acceptable and people we spoke all agreed, remember this work needs to be completed for the benifit of the guests!

Would we go back again.....too right!!

The one issue we had was the limited menu for lunch, we ended the holday walking across to the Palace, just for a change. Having said that, when you walk into the Palace dome, the noise levels are very obvious, could not wait to go to the peace and transquility of the Spa.
We both thoroughly enjoyed our stay and felt completely at home. Staff very attentitive with special mention to Mohamad,(steak resturant) Samri (pool snack bar) and our room cleaner.(room 6226). One week not enough, two weeks is excellant, three weeks too long. We recommend two weeks, you will not be disappointed, give it a try!

Just got back from 2 weeks at the Makadi Spa and have the following comments to make:

Room

Our room was beautiful with a large bathroom and sitting area overlooking the adjoining hotel on the first floor. When we arrived the cupboard door in front of the fridge had come off its hinges – reported it to reception and it was ‘fixed’ straight way – this happened 3 times and each time it was fixed immediately.

Unfortunately the air conditioning unit was so noisy as were the guests upstairs. After being woken up at 5.00 am with bangs and noise overhead we told reception who advised they would find out if they had any problems. Day 2 they didn’t start making any noise until 6.00 am which we could live with. However a few days later it happened again at 4.00 am and we spoke to the General Manager who told us it was when the Germans in the hotel arrived and left as they had night flights and with their being no carpets on the floor to mask the noise you could hear it - even over the noisy air conditioning – 6 nights out of 14 we were woken up in the early hours!

Pools and Garden

The pools and gardens are clean and nicely kept and the pool bar staff very friendly – the Jacuzzi however was too cold to enjoy. Although we read about the building work before we went it was very loud and intrusive at times.

Bars

Most evenings found us in the Garden Bar which was lovely although by the end of 14 days the music which was lovely the first night but was repeated every night did tend to annoy you by the end of the holiday – Mohammed was excellent we were never kept waiting for a drink and his cocktails were definitely the best. A special mention must also go to Upper Egypt who filled in when Mohammed was not there.

Restaurants

There were a lot of inconsistencies with food and service. When we arrived the Asian was excellent but during our 2nd week especially when Mamhood was not there the service and food was appalling – we had to send our chicken satay back one day as it was off. Only went to the Steak House once and the steak was inedible but had lovely steak at lunch in The View and also the Asian. Fish restaurant also was good with Mohammed a very good waiter. Feel the menus in the hotel are very repetitive as they are the same every day – could there not be a change every other week?

We ate at the Lebanese and the Italian in the other hotel on the last two nights and these were really good, in fact the best of the holiday.

The highlight on my breakfasts was sitting in the The View overlooking the sea – beautiful - we were spoilt as after a week it was moved to The Cove at the side of the hotel – not so scenic!

To sum up, the Makadi Spa has the potential to be an excellent hotel but there are so many problems which need to be addressed namely:

The most important thing is Food Hygiene. Both myself and husband were both ill twice with visits to the Pharmacy costing £10 per time as he never had any change (£40 in all). When speaking to other guests they too had the dreaded Pharaoh’s Curse. We saw many instances too numerous to mention when hygiene left a lot to be desired. We travel every year to the Far East have been to Africa and Egypt before with no problem.

Some staff need proper training, starting with the managers who seemed happy to just let staff to run about like headless chickens not knowing quite what they should be doing. Even the cleaners could do with training – when we arrived there was a sticky spot on the floor of the lobby bar where something had been spilt – this was still there when we left 2 weeks later. The floors are swept but obviously not moped around the chairs and tables.

I would not come back to the Spa again if I came back to Egypt – the Baron Palms Resort at Sharm was far better and neither of us were ill.

Room Tip: Top floor to avoid noise from rooms above.

Makadi Spa adult only Hotel will be a beautiful relaxing hotel once it is finished. We have just returned from a week there and were very impressed with the rooms (although our huge balcony did not get any sun at all and overlooked The Palace gardens and bar with the noise that goes with a family resort) so try and get a room overlooking pool or sea! The Hotel forms part of a larger resort and Spa guests have access to all the other hotels in resort including their restaurants, so there is a huge choice of eating places. Unfortunately the hotel is only about 60% finished. Pool areas, lobby etc all finished but no spa at all, and rooms still being completed. This obviously resulted in day long noise, grinding marble slabs and banging, which could clearly be heard all around the pool area. Work was still going on along the corridor from our room and we had to gp through an unfinished area to get to the lift to the lobby. The other lift was at the beach end of hotel. The staff are generally very good, just a bit hit and miss round pool area (depended on where you sat). Rooms however are very clean as of course they should be in a new hotel. The whole area is beautifully lit at night and sitting in the lobby bar with a drink overlooking the pool was a highlight of the day. Restaurants in Spa all al a carte but found the menus a bit limited. Many items are at extra cost and menus not varied at all. Looks like same menus all year! Desserts were the same on offer at all restaurants, so not much choice there either. Icecream featured heavily and the rep told us to avoid this. Of course, we were able to visit all the other dining options but this meant being with children which is not so good when staying and paying extra to be adult only. Steak restaurant was excellent one night and not too good on another occasion with options not being available, so a bit hit and miss again. The View restaurant was excellent for breakfast overlooking the sea - heaven.
Unfortunately we did not get chance to visit many of the dining options elsewhere because both my husband and I were ill. My husband recovered quickly but I was ill from Wednesday through to Friday when we came home, even though we took advice of rep and went to pharmacy for the right pills. Immodium etc bought from home is useless in Egypt! We have visited Egypt on several occasions when weather has been even hotter and have only been ill on one other occasion, so we are very careful about cleanliness, sitting in direct sun, not drinking tap water at all, and no ice in drinks. Many other people were also ill so perhaps there was a bug in the hotel which hopefully will be remedied. The beach area outside of hotel is not complete and has no sunbeds etc but the best place for swimming and snorkelling is round the bay (about 100 yards or so) in front of Sunwing Hotel. Sea warm, swimming wonderful as is the snorkelling at this point with easy access to the sea and coral areas roped off.
Once the building work is finished, the staff fully trained and all areas including Spa up and running it should truly be a fantastic hotel and if prices stay the same excellent value for money. They just need to rethink their food options, serve drinks especially cocktails in suitable glasses and it will be 5 star deluxe and one of the best hotels in Egypt.

Room Tip: Ask whether room faces sea or pool. Ours faced onto The Palace Hotel gardens and as it faced north...
