“Not 5 star but great holiday”
Reviewed June 29, 2013

Myself and my husband stayed at sunrise from 21st - 28th June and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We flew with Thomas cook and the flight was good 5 hours from gatwick, you have to purchase a visa on arrival £13 each or 15 dollars each (cheaper so recommend purchasing for visa) on the flight out we was told that the visa was optional but this is not the case in hurgharda! A little queuing at the airport but the gatwick flight arrives at the same time as 3 others! Collecting cases we found that the airport start take them off the carousel and place on the floor next to it so by the time you arrive they will probably be there.
The transfer was by coach and when we arrived at 19.30 ( +1 hour time difference from uk) it was 30 degrees. we were directed to the coach by an egyptian Thomas cook rep ( Mohammed ) the cases are loaded for you and the man was holding out his hand for a tip - we gave him £1 as did the majority of people, however once they get £5 - £10 in coins they ask if someone would change it for a note : dont be alarmed by this but its due to banks only changing notes!
The transfer took 20 mins and this included another drop of, the coach was air conditioned and the rep introduced himself and gave each guest a welcome pack with an invite to the welcome meeting the following morning.
Once we arrived at the hotel the cases were taken from you and instead of checking in individually they sat you down as a group, gave you a drink and a pen so you could fill out your details on the checking in forms. The staff in reception then collected the forms and your passports and they checked in the guests.nyou was then called up to collect your passports and was allocated a porter to carry your cases to the rooms you was also informed that they had a restaurant open until 0100 to make sure all new arrivals had a meal. We were located in 638 and as it was on the 6th floor was taken up to the room in the staff lift - the lift was awful and straight away I felt that we had made a mistake booking the holiday there........ However it was the staff lift! Once out of the lift we was taken to the room, we were told that the rooms on the 6th and 7th floor had not been refurbished yet so was expecting something like the lift..... Not the case it was a lovely big room with 2 double beds a kettle, fridge, bathroom and a huge balcony with a view of the sea, beach, pool and the hotel gardens ( the view was spectacular) the room was clean and although you could tell it needed an update in the bathroom it was still a lovely room!!!

We unpacked and decided to go and get our bearings, we walked down the stairs to try and find the outside bar and this took a while the best thing to do is follow the signs to the 2nd floor restaurant at the restaurant there's is steps that leads you straight to the pool and beach and bar!!

There is also two lifts but we found these on day 3 a great relief as going up and down the stairs to the 6th floor in 40 degree of heat is not recommended ( both situated just outside reception)

We spent every day on the private beach, towels are provided from the towel hut daily and although it states that you can't reserve sunbeds you will need to get up early to guarantee one.
The beach has a lagoon that has beautiful fish in and snorkels are defiantly a good purchase. You then have a island with more sunbeds and this leads to the sea 2 x sets of steps to gain entry. This is the place to see the two turtles. They come out between 8 & 10 in the morning and are seen most days, also saw manta rays and other beautiful fish around this area and the coral is fantastic.

The welcome meeting was one of the best we have been to and highly recommended to attend not only for the info on trips and the resort but you are introduced to the head of each department.

The hotel and staff love the English and go all out for the guests putting on 2 x British nights with British food ( with an Egyptian twist) we had a roast on Sunday ( very nice - roast beef and yorkshire pudding) also on the Wednesday they had cottage pie and steak and kidney ( again very nice)
The food was very good breakfast: omelettes, eggs - boiled and fried, sausages ( chicken/beef) toast, yogurt, cereals and so on.
Lunch was either in a restaurant - fish, chicken, pasta, rice, potatoes, chips, lasagne on loads more, or you could have something from the beach bar like burgers, hot dogs pizza and chips.
Dinner was themed, you had different restaurants they did a variety of food and again always something to be found to eat, all the meals were buffet style and all piping hot. I do not understand why people have stated the food was not great as there really was something for everyone!
You can also eat at the al la carte restaurant not once free but 6 times - 2 sittings available 19.30 / 20.30 this was waiter service and free of charge the only thing I would say is the wine is charged for and the creame brûlée is awful stick to the apple strudel!

The entertainment was cheesy but the animation team... Teto, Julia, Gemma and the others that I can't spell there names were friendly and not pushy if you did not want to join in they understood and did not pester you they were lead by can can and he was fantastic at his job and very approachable for new ideas! They have a hard job in the sun all day dressed in uniform but are always happy!

The bars were small and you did have to queue for a drink unless you did what we did and ask one of the bar staff clearing tables to get our drinks, baz was brill as was tarek and they soon had our drinks waiting for us and another came just before finishing the drinks! They did not expect a tip but we did at the end of our holiday as it was great service and highly deserved!

The waiters and cleaners were always busy, and everyone spoke to you with out pestering. There was a man that sold drinks all day Mr fresh, even though it was all inclusive he had the most amazing fresh juices orange, melon etc and would walk around all day with the drinks! They did cost £1.50 but they were delicious cold and refreshing so I would recommend trying one or two!

We did one trip the boat trip through Thomas cook and it was an excellent day the beach we went to was out of this world and the food was gorgeous and to top it off we saw dolphins swimming close to the boat! We went snorkelling for an hour and it really is a must do!

I really have said enough we met some great people ( other holiday makers) had a great laugh and really had an excellent holiday, the weather was lovely and hot and yes you may get a bit of stomach upset but don't have the ice in your drinks or brush your teeth with there water if you do get upset stomach then go to the chemist and they will give you a tablet to stop it. Remember a holiday is what you make it and this holiday was well worth the money!

Room Tip: Email the hotel prior to holiday and ask for a sea view room with large balcony

At this hotel at the moment. Lovely hotel management and staff lovely. Very good food. Alcohol is awful vodka.I think it would strip paint off. Many people in hotel I'll with bad belly symptoms. I have been suffering 5 days now. Animation team have to be the worst ever. One good night in 7. Anyone visiting bring a pack of cards. You will need them.

First time we have been to this Hotel. Booked through Thomas Cook as we would get sea view room and the price was very attractive which suited our budget.
Arrived at the hotel in the evening and checking in was easy as the reps did everything for you.
We were given room 419 which had a double bed and good views although we had a tiny balcony which was a little disappointing.
Bedroom itself was of a good size but be warned that the mattresses are rock hard with a lot of sag. Whether all the rooms are like this we wouldn't know.
The best way of describing our refurnished room is rough around the edges as is the Hotel. There seems to be a lot of little things not done.

The cleaners do a decent job keeping areas keep and tidy and the floors are polished daily.

The beach area is stunning, a real plus for the hotel. You can snorkel in the lagoon or there are 2 x steps leading to the deeper water where fish can be regularly found. It can be a little windy which makes the water a little choppier that we like and the red flags were
in operation most of the time.
The beach bar is good for drinks and snacks but be warned not to put your arms on the granite table as they get extremely hot ( just ask my daughter) who made this mistake.
The beach area is cleaned every night and it really does look like the photo's in the brochure.

The drinks were ok. Good beer but the sprits are like rocket fuel so be warned. All cocktails are included in the AI.
Big thanks to Adel and Omar at the bar they were terrific fun and the stars of the hotel.

We found the food ok, plenty of choice but found that the salads disappointing. The hotel kitchen staff try to replicate different themed nights but sadly got most of the international dishes wrong but there was always something we liked..

We did 3 x trips out.
Sand buggies were great fun and the highlight of the holiday although most are pretty knackered still a good laugh. They stopped to show you how the people live and make some bread for you. They also offered you a chance to ride a camel which made me laugh at my wife's face when he stood up. Even more funny was when my son in law ( big chap) also tried it. The camels face was a picture when for the first time he couldn't stand up and then with a very loud grunt finally lifted the great mass which was on top. I nearly wet myself laughing and am sure that it will be relived over and over. The camel looked pleased at the end to let him off and I could only imagine was he was thinking.

Submarine trip was a waste of time and money. They say that they take you down 25 meters but I don't think so and everything is staged for you i.e. home made coral reef and 4 giant seahorses all with painted eyes. The divers have food with them to attract the fish but they were all mainly all the same.

Boat trip was really good. we booked through the guy on the beach and had a great day out.

The entertainment was awful. Some people seemed to love but the singers wouldn't get past the first round of x factor and over all pretty poor. Maybe it was the entertainment which drove us to the bar.
They would be much better doing there own stuff rather than covers and when they start singing through their noses it almost sounded like Pinky and Perky on Stage. Be Warned!!!

Overall we had a great holiday. Sun everyday, foods everyday, beer everyday laughing at Pinky and Perky and that infamous camel ride.

Would we go back yes, but for only the same money we paid. £ 550.00 June. 11 nights. Bargain...

Ignore the negative reviews as some people don't like anything anyway and does not matter where they are. Those people should think how much they paid and if they want to go the a five star hotel then that would cost a lot more.

Room Tip: Book a superior room..

This was my first time to Egypt and I did like it, the weather was lovely if not too hot and the sea was so clear. However I would not recommend this hotel. The hotel itself was nice, 90% off the staff were helpful and friendly but the food was awful!! I've been all inclusive lots of times and this hotel was the worst by far. We used to dread it at night because that meant you had to try and find something edible. This is also the first time I've been all inclusive where the staff have tried to sell me drinks whilst eating. We both fell ill and talking to a lot of people around the beach a lot of people were also ill. Our room was nice with great views, the bathroom could have done with modernising but it was fine. Our cleaner was great, a lovely man and he made different things out of our towels most days.
Me and my girlfrind were at this hotel for only one week and we could not wait to leave just so we could get a decent meal.

Just returned from our 2 weeks stay at this hotel 7 to 21st June. A la carte restaurant was lovely the chicken kiev was great. The cleaner in our room 309 was brilliant so friendly. Some bar staff where quite rude but overall a great place to stay. Taxi service from hotel 6 seater mini bus was great. Beware off Blue orange taxis quoted us 30egyp then when set off said each!!!! Luckily security at the hotel sorted this out. Granada restaurant to left of hotel food lovely. I would not visit Hurghada again unless something is done with the rudeness of the shop owners outside the hotel. Awful people felt very threatened.

Myself (25) and my boyfriend (21) spent 11 nights at the Sunrise on 7th June 2013. After reading several reviews before our trip we were slightly worried by some of the very negative comments but as they were outweighed by the good ones we were looking forward to our 11 nights in Egypt. Please ignore any bad reviews on this place we had such an amazing time.
When we arrived we were welcomed by the staff on reception, guided to our rooms and then then our cases arrived soon after with the bell boys. It was late evening (10.30pm) but there was food available for us in the main restaurant which was great as we were quite hungry after a long day of travelling.
Our room (619) was on one of the two floors waiting to be refurbished but was very clean and spacious with a fantastic view of the lagoon and the Red Sea. To be honest after seeing a room that has been refurbished there isnt that much difference. We had a problem with a leak from the bathroom sink which was sorted after a couple of days, we did have to report the problem 3 times to reception but as it was only a small leak and you dont really spend that much time in the room anyway it wouldnt make me mark the hotel down for this.
We sat around the pool every day as we arent beach lovers but there was always plenty of sunbeds available but if you do want some shade we suggest you get down early to get an umberella as there was some people reserving sunbeds in the middle of the night!! If you want to book any boat trips book through the hotel they are a lot cheaper than Thomas Cook. We went on the snorkelling trip which stopped at Paradise Island beach and then 3 snorkelling stops including lunch and unlimited drinks for £25 per person. Great value for money.
It can be a bit daunting venturing out of the hotel as people hassle you every couple of metres but to be honest there is enough going on inside the hotel to keep you entertained anyway. Taxis booked through the hotel are also a good idea and very cheap if you do want to visit different places in Hurgharda.
We visited a restaurant about 5 minutes away from the hotel (turn left when you leave the hotel) called Granada, lovely food and drinks, very reasonble in price also free wifi. Would definitely recommend this place as a change from the hotel food/drink. The food was really good in the hotel always hot and fresh although quite repetitive. The drinks were ok,the white wine was changed about 4 days before we left and was much more drinkable than the beginning of the holiday. My boyfriend said the beer was probably watered down but the vodka and cocktails were fine to drink.
Onto the animation team who were just fantastic. Cancan, Teto, Gemma, Chipsy, Negga, Julia, Donga, Alona and Ilia. They work so hard to ensure you enjoy your holiday and the beach party they put on one night was just brilliant. They get everybody involved but leave you be if you dont want to get involved in the daytime/night time activities.
All in all we had such a great holiday and already thinking of returning next year. The Sunrise Holidays Resort is such a welcoming place the staff are always around to make sure everything is ok and asking for advice on how to make things better or improve anything within the hotel. Thank you Sunrise for a brill holiday
