The trouble with a hotel that get's such great feedback on Trip Advisor such as this one is that when you go there, your expectations are that much higher! We have just returned from a week at PLR and all in all had a very relaxing stay. We contacted the hotel a couple of weeks before our departure to ask if we could upgrade our room - we thought we'd spoil ourselves and they agreed a rate for us which included a 25% discount for a deluxe room. Our room (1432) was huge with an oversize bed and a lovely bathroom with 'his & hers' sinks and a walk in wardrobe. We were on the 3rd floor with a nice view of the sea & pools. So to start this review on a positive note - this is one of the best all inclusive hotels which we have stayed in for the quality of the food and drinks. I have read other reviews on here about terrible wine and watered down cocktails neither of which we experienced. My husband and I drink wine and spirits often and the drinks at the PLR are definately not watered down - the wine takes a bit of getting used to although the rose is totally fine. The food here is wonderful especially if, like me, you enjoy fresh salads whilst on holiday - such a great choice. The only niggle I had was that not all of the salads were labelled with what they conatined and as a non meat eater, I did get a couple of nasty surprises so was very careful with my selection thereafter. The hotel put on a wonderful 'gala' dinner and the sheer effort with the restaurant set up and table arrangement was really appreciated. We also enjoyed the music on this night and other nights from their resident guitarist, James Kirby - totally right for this kind of environment. As we were staying in a deluxe room we had access to the Executive Lounge bar which we used on a daily basis and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and comfort in there. Special thanks goes to Tamer who looked after us so well in here and made sure our drinks were always replenished without being overpowering - he really is the right employee to have in this bar and we appreciated it. We ate in the chinese restaurant and sea food restaurant whilst we were here, both very good - tried to book in the Italian but it was fully booked for the few nights we tried so gave up. Now for the niggles and do not think that I am nit picking here but as I have said, this hotel seems to pride itself on giving 100% service at all times so it should deliver if it decides this is what it wants to sell itself on. The hotel offer a drinks service by the pool area and beach. As we were unable to get sunloungers by the pool most mornings (plenty of towel reserving going on which is not meant to be allowed but we witnessed it with staff doing the reserving!) we ended up on the beach every day which was just as nice. We were impressed by staff asking for our drink orders but having asked for a coffee on one morning and 1.5 hours later, nothing had arrived - we gave up, went for a swim and got it ourselves. The next day however, we were asked for our order and it arrived not only in superfast time of 15 mins but also with a bowl of fruit!! This was the norm for the rest of our hols, either superfast service or slow to the point of giving up. The same applied most days to our lunch and dinner in the main restuarant - it just wasn't consistent. We were given a form in our bedroom which asked us our preffered time of day to have our room cleaned so we put between 10am-1pm - most days we returned to our room by 3pm and it had only just been finished and one time the guys were still in it cleaning (this was at 3.30pm) so they asked us to go away and come back in 30 minutes. A bit like the 'turn down' service in the evening - it happened once with lovely little choccies on our pillows and towel art but only once - it never happened again although we did leave our 'do not disturb' light on for a couple of evenings. This all sounds like being really picky if you haven't been to this hotel but if you have, you will probably agree that it can be really annoying to not get the level of service which they offer around to other guests. I'd rather they didn't offer the service so as not to set my expectation levels and then I wouldn't be disapointed!! The manager of the hotel, Fouquet Zakaria is visable most days and we were impressed by his walking around the hotel checking that everyone was happy with everything. We did speak to him about our concerns and niggles and to give him justice, he did listen and make note of our comments. Just a couple of other things to add - there is absolutley nothing near the hotel except some of the biggest hotels of the size only ever seen by us in Las Vegas (!) that are currently being built - this area is set to change dramatically over the years. You can't make direct access to the beach from the section outside the hotel because of the coral reef which is fine as the hotel has built a jetty ( see photos) although we found the bit of beach a walk along the shoreline to be nicer. Getting in and out of Hurghada airport is hassle. Upon arrival it is chaos especially if more than one flight comes in at the same time as everyone is trying to buy their visas and fill out their forms - upon leaving, more forms have to be filled out and several security checks to go through. Also having read reviews about cramped conditions upon the Thomson flight, our outbound wasn't too bad but the return flight was horrendous. I'm 5ft 8 and my knees was squashed up against the seat infront - the return flight to LGW was nearly 6 hours and I now have returned from my holiday with sciatica as a result. So to sum up - yes, we have had a lovely relaxing holiday at the PLR and we would be happy to recommend the hotel but it wasn't a cheap holiday and no, we won't return as the flight/airport hassle and the service issues plus cost.
