“relax in dawar el omda”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 27, 2013

We live in hurghada and visit el gouna occasionally. Booked through booking.com for a long weekend. Our room overlooked the lagoon which was lovely on the balcony. Supposedly dressing gown, free slippers, and water in the fridge. None of these appeared! Coffee making facility in the room but supplies not every day. Hanna in the bar kindly supplied them for us. Breakfast was delightful, the pool is heated and stunning. All staff friendly and chatty.
We enjoyed its calm tranquillity and will return.
Free boat to zaytona beach complimentary bed shade and towel. Perfect for a change of view. El gouna downtown is still suffering lack of tourists with restaurants empty as most are all inclusive travellers, so check for bogof offers and happy hours. Clubhouse opposite the dawar is half price drinks 6_8. Nightly.

Room Tip: We stayed in422 - many steps ! Slight noise from dunes at the rear lovely view to the balcony.

We tried to book the Sultan Bey (where we have stayed before), but couldn't get in using BA Avios points, so we booked the Dawar El Omda next door. When we arrived they told us that the Dawar El Omdo was closed due to low bookings (very few westerners travelling to Egypt at the moment), and that we would be checking in at the Sultan Bey, next door, instead!!! As this is where we wanted to stay anyway, we were thrilled! Both properties are owned by the same company, so, in order to cut costs they consolidated all the bookings into one hotel. I know this sounds terrible, but actually from what I have seen, the Sultan is in a slightly better location (we live in Egypt and we love the Sultan Bey). We have walked around the Dawar El Omda and it looks like a lovely hotel, as is the Sultan Bey. I can't comment on the rooms as we never checked in. I very much encourage you to stay at either hotel, as they are both in great location, laid back and quite lovely. If you turn up and get bumped to the Sultan Bey, don't freak out, because they are both great. I encourage you to book either. Both are in the heart of Gouna town centre, with lots of restaurants and shops. Its very quiet at the moment and there are more Egyptians staying there than usual (it was all Europeans the last time we were there). Gouna is a low key, hassle free, well kept location. You have to feel sorry for the owners and workers there as business is very much down, but everyone remains positive, helpful and pleasant. It is so far from the trouble in other parts if Egypt, that it really feels like a different country. Although Gouna is an 'artificial 'town' it has been done with thought and care and makes for a great, relaxing stay.

We have two kids and we love it!!

The hotel is located just in down town where a plenty of cafes and restaurants are open almost all day and night.
The hotel is nice and provides an authentic Egyptian interior touch and theme. the rooms are averge, they have egyptian style but the furniture is old and of a bad quality.

Sleeping quality is average, the bathroom was disasterous....we had maintenance problem with having the flush not working and the sink sewage not working as well along with very weak water pressure...it took two days and more pushing to get this fixed finally.

Breakfast is good and the food quality is good. seating and restaurant is good with plenty of sunlight getting in.
The pool is good but small though we liked swimming in the lagoon. But I believe that more sea beds by the lagoon would be a good idea.

The service is average and staff are polite. However, you can get the expected service only in case you don't take NO for an answer. First, we kept pushing the receptionist to find us another room since the first one was on parking lot view while we wanted the lagoon view and finally we got a lagoon room and quiet one as well.
Second, we kept pushing the room service guy to group the twin beds together since we are couple and he wanted us to wait till next day but again with more pushing, he did it professionally and quickly !!!
Third, a room service staff awake us in the morning to ask how many guests in the room !!! what ???!!!!! can't he as the reception for this???

The hotel is having a discrimination issue by not allowing veiled women to swim in either the pool or lagoon. Although this didn't affect me but it is unfair to have friends of us couldn't use the main hotel facilities although they paid same fares as any other guest and there were no prior notification of that before booking.

The overall experience is ok, value for money is good but i would try other hotels in El Gouna prior to staying again in this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a lagoon view and preferably on the third floor for quieter stay.

Dear Sir,
Thanks for taking the time to review our hotel on Tripadvisor.
We are glad you are pleased with our food quality and enjoyed our restaurant set up. And your idea of more sunbeds around the pool will certainly be considered.
We do apologize for any delay you have experienced with our service and for the incident with the houseman in the morning. This issue is well noted and we will take the necessary action to avoid this from repeating the future.
Regarding the pool dress code, our pool dress code is clearly communicated and displayed to all guests, and it is the same for all hotels in El Gouna. Only the usual lycra swimsuits and lycra shirts are allowed in the pool, while the full body lycra suites are allowed in the lagoon only. Any other closing of improper material is not allowed in either venues for hygienic reasons.

We thank you once more for your valuable comments and hope to welcome you again in our hotel

The Dawar El Omda is located central El Gouna, close to everything. It has nice clean rooms, although certain might argue that it is slightly old, but for the price it's fair. The personnel is friendly. The breakfast buffet is good. The quality is great for the price, compare to other hotesl in Egypt. It was our second time there. It's 5 minutes from everywhere in town. We went with our son who is 18 months, and I must say that the hotel is not really equipped to accomodate people with strollers. There are stairs everywhere! But they provided us with a cot and a baby chair for free. The pool is small and the beach on the lagoon not really inviting. If you go there for a beach holiday, you're at the wrong place. Unless you to to Zeituna beach every day.

This hotel, and the entire El Gouna area, is beautiful and remote. It has a relaxing atmosphere and let's you miss nothing! And, if you want to go to the beach, the hotels own boat will take you there in just minutes..
The rooms are tidy and a good size. The service was also great!

The hotel objects against long swim suits and not cotton swim suits. I have a lycra long swimsuit however it is not allowed for me to enjoy the swimming pool. My friend wanted to go swim and the hotel staff prevented her although her swimsuit was all lycra and not cotton.

Dear Heba,

Thanks for taking the time to review our hotel on Tripadvisor. Our pool dress code is clearly communicated and displayed to all guests and we do not allow an long swimsuits in the pool. Only lycra shirts are allowed but not full body ones.
All hotels in El Gouna apply the same dress code for pool guests, irrespective of religion or origin. We apologize if you find this measure discriminating, we are committed to the well being of all guests.

We arrived to the hotel in a group on a Friday at dawn for a weekend, the receptionist gave us the key to room 101 which is the first room to the reception by a quick look to the very small room with the parking lot view and light that didnt work we knew we had to switch.

So we went back to the receptionist who insisted-without checking- that there are no other rooms for us, so we insisted back that he should at least do a bit of effort and check. After a 15 minutes argument of course he found us a nice 3rd floor room that overlooks the lagoon. Room 421.

However the problem was that the room didn’t have a queen bed as we requested, only two twin beds. A room service guy accompanied us to show us to the room and see if he can pull the beds together to make a big bed. Another argument with the house keeping guy who wanted to pull the beds together without fixing the bedding, and wanted us to wait for the morning guy to fix the bedding for us. Again after asking three times, it turn out he can do it and actually he seems to be trained for it. But again laziness rule.

Finally after an hour of checking-in we thought we could relax, that’s of course before discovering that the whole plumbing system of the bathroom doesn’t work. Toilette doesn’t flush, clogged sink and almost no water in the tap. So we called again to have it fixed in the morning, but of course the night guy failed to leave a note for the morning guy and we had to ask again.

After 3 hours of sleeping and at around 8am, we heard a door knock that turned into banging, my husband open the door to find one of the staff asking him, “how many people in the room”, although we are both travelers but that was a first. My husband asked him to check with the reception but the guy asked again so my husband answered him to get him off his face.

After all those unfortunate events that shows carelessness and laziness of staff we finally made it to breakfast. Food was real good, lots of varieties and fresh food. Later we have ordered burger in the room, it was pretty good.

The pool is rather small, with 10 people swimming you can feel cramped, however the lagoon offers a nice swim and spacious a nice small beach. Swimming boots might be a good idea to avoid the stones.

The hotel doesn’t allow veiled women to wear their specially designed bathing suites, I am not veiled however I had to feel for them as they paid full fair but they couldn’t use a hotel facility. I can argue about freedom and acceptance to all humans till the cows come home, however on the other hand it’s a hotel policy and the management reserves the right to put their own rules. The question is: IS THIS RULE BEING DISCLOSED WHILE BOOKING? INCLUDING ON LINE BOOKING? The answer is No as I checked myself. so it might be a good idea for the management to disclose such limiting rules, the least they can do out of respect is to offer the information so people can make conscious choices.

The room was ok suitable for a 3 stars hotel, some innovation would have made difference. The oriental country style doesn’t mean bad quality furniture and window screens that don’t close. Also the90s model TV didn’t add but cheapness to the style specially with a remote that doesn’t work and unclear channels.

The view from the room was really nice as it overlooks the lagoon and the sea from a distance.
The location of the hotel is really good as it is right in downtown Gouna where there are many restaurants and cafes and right in front of the club house.

Overall, a bit of care and letting go the motto of “laziness rules” would compensate the missing stars.

Room Tip: stay away from the 100's rooms, they have a parking lot view. get a room overlooks the lagoon, t...

Dear Shera111,

We appreciate your comment and feedback on your stay and it is nice to hear that you appreciated our breakfast buffet and lagoon, as well as all facilities of El Gouna resort. I would like to apologize for the unresponsive acts you have encountered from our staff and that the room you have received did not match all your expectations. As the hotel was almost fully booked and your group checked-in late in the night, our receptionist tried to have all rooms checked in in a swift manner. As the first room with king bed was not satisfactory, he has upgraded you to another room type with lagoon view but only twin beds were available. We do apologize as well for the maintenance issue in the bathroom.

The dress code policy at the swimming pool is clearly displayed next to the pool. Indeed it is not sent to guest prior to arrival and we are looking to solve this in the future but not all online booking systems allow to provide pre-stay guest information.

We hope you will come back to Dawar el Omda and to El Gouna town for a future stay.
Sincerely yours,
Maged Maher
