“Cosy, friendly nice hotel downtown El Gouna”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

Very nice and friendly staff - perfect service in this cosy hotel, the food is very good and are different every day.
Dawar is placed central down town El Gouna close to everything - anyway we will be back for sure.

Having booked (and paid for) a 15 night family holiday next Xmas/New Year we (two of us) decided to try the hotel out for a week in March. On arrival we were greeted cordially enough then taken by the bell hop at least 800 metres across the town, passing bars, shops etc to a tatty broken up courtyard enclosure and shown into a very large, very dated, dark apartment. We'd had no prior explanation at reception why this would be, and when we showed alarm the bell hop passed me his phone, connected to reception, and the receptionist insisted we should accept this for 1 night only and could move next day.

The apartment was dingy, disorientating and far away from the hotel so we stood our ground and were eventually put in a very cramped, nicely furnished room, right back near to reception!
We were moved (upon further request) next day to a double room near the pool and had a comfortable stay in a charming room, albeit a little light on 4* touches, and the room man was lovely. However they offered to upgrade us at Xmas to make up for all the inconvenience.

Hotel staff very courteous and friendly; breakfast choice fine and tasty; pool/lagoon-side areas very relaxing. Sunbed man very efficient and looks after guests well.

The only draw back - for us - was the amount of cats who jumped up on sunbeds, approached you around the dining room (we were told by one waiter we couldn't take breakfast outside because of the cats!), begged at your patio, in the bar, and on occasion nipped into our room and got under the bed. OK if you are an avid cat lover.

The bar staff were great although we found the local basic wine a little pricey at £27 a bottle (same £10 elsewhere).

In all a relaxing week in a charming resort. Really appreciated the lack of hassle around the place, being more used to plenty of this in other parts of Egypt.
Fantastic choice of restaurants and bars and a fun tuc-tuc trip away from the fabulous marina. Loved the friendly 'Clubhouse' opposite the hotel which has a great pool area, cute chill-out beach, fab menu and great live music nights (the use of the pool/beach area is free of charge). We are really looking forward to returning to the area at Christmas . . . .alas not to be at Dawar El Omda.

On collecting our passports from reception the gentleman on duty said he needed to ask us "a favour" - this turned out to be in the form of 80 euros each for Xmas dinner & 120 euros each for New Year dinner - approx £500 for 2 dinners for 3 people.
When we explained we'd booked & already paid for B&B only and do not celebrate Xmas anyway (personal reasons) we were told this was "obligatory", must be paid and if we didn't like it we could cancel our booking.

So we have.

We are still returning to the area - it is lovely - we have found alternative accommodation where we have not been put in such a compromising position.

In all a pretty nice place to stay - but we are not prepared to be forced into paying extortionate amounts for food we don't wish to eat.

Dear Guest,

Thanks very much for your valuable comment on Tripadivsor. It is great to hear that you appreciated our staff friendliness, our breakfast buffet and our pool area, as well as all facilities of El Gouna resort.
We sincerely apologize that the room provided to you at check in was not matching your expectations, our larger apartments are only about 250 meter from the hotel and extra facilities in these apartments usually satisfy our guest. Our Reception did strive to provide you with a better room and as you pointed out we even offered an upgrade for your next stay.
We are doing our best to keep cats away from the properties as some guest are not cat lovers, but some others continue to feed them which makes them come back. They are regularly taken away to a shelter.
Concerning the Gala Dinner during Christmas and New Year, this is clearly mentioned as an obligatory extra charge for all guest therefore it was only reminded to you as some guest do not read in details all description and information on additional fees. Room prices are set in BB and additional charges (such as gala dinner or internet) are mentioned separately. We understand you do not wish to take part of it and decided to cancel your stay with us. We hope you will come back to Dawar el Omda and El Gouna resort for another stay.
With our best wishes,
Dawar el Omda management.

Dawar el Omda is my favourite hotel for long weekends in Egypt. I visted the hotel few times and found the hotel staff very welcoming. The rooms are simple but comfortable enough and the balcony benefits of a great lagoon view. Breakfast is nice and the waiters dont hesitate to help. There is a boat which goes every 30 min. next to hotel which takes you to a private beach nearby.

We needed somewhere to flop down, feel some heat and try and unwind from London life and we got it here at the Dawar El Omda. Khalid the receptionist who checked us in was warm, polite and efficient , explaining everything to us in perfect English, he is a real gem as quite often receptionists in bigger hotels do not share these qualities.

Our room, if I am honest was a little tired in places and yes the mattreses are very firm but we slept easily. The hotel is undergoing refurbishment and we look forward to returning when it is finished.

The restaurant is lovely, and chef Ali will ensure you get more than enough food, he made us amazing falafels, and every morning remembered how we like our pancakes and omlettes and often hand delivered them to our table(and we had not tipped anyone)

We had an all inclusive package and the house wine is quite drinkable! You have to pay extra for freshly squeezed orange juice and maybe this should be included in all inclusive? Andrew the main barman is humorous, polite , helpful and great to chat to in the evenings. We sat with him in the courtyard under the lovely bougainvillea and Hibiscus trees and smoked an apple shisha pipe and just relaxed.

The "dine around" feature of El Gouna is really great, if you are staying half board or all inclusive you can choose to dine at three other hotels .(You get a voucher )We were missing some spicy food so went o the Tandoor in Ali Pasha hotel which serves authentic north indian food, fab! Your voucher covers yu for a lovely 3 course menu.

We also went to the Movenpick for a Thai dinner and again a Thai chef cooking great Thai food bit it is expensive and your voucher will not cover much of the bill. The Movenpick is a huge flashy resort and if that is what you are looking for you will love it. We prefer intimate with a good level of personal service which is what you will get at Dawar El Omda.

There is only one singer on one evening and I think maybe a live jazz band on another evening would be good. Nice chilled out jazzy music is played in the restaurant all the time and reception which adds to your relaxing vibe.

There is good massage on offer in the hotel and three hour long massages will cost around £30 each time, so good value. The oriental massage works on your pressure points and is very effective.

The lagoon was too cold for us to swim in but I am sure that it provides a welcome dip later in the year. We enjoyed 27 degrees every day but the temperature drops at night and it can be breezy and feel more like 21 degrees at this time of year.

Dawar el omda is situated a two minute walk from the square with shops and bars and restaurants which is ideal. Tuk Tuks cost 50p each for any journey in El Gouna and the Marina is a 6 minute ride away .

The manager of Dawar El Omda ensures you are happy and satisfied and he took the time to sit with us and explain about the refurbishment which was resulting in some noise and was very interested in our feedback which we appreciated.

All in all great trip and after seeing downtown Hurghada am very relived we didnt go there!

"Dawar El Omda" means something like staying at the elder of the village's house and that is the atmosphere created here, we loved it!

Room Tip: Ask for a lagoon view.

Lovely hotel. Friendly attentive staff. Reception staff were excellent. Room was clean and quiet. Food was plentiful. Nightly fumigation of the hotel vegetation with insecticide was a little disturbing!

This was our second visit to this lovely, friendly hotel in the gorgeous resort of El Gouna.
The first time round we rated it very highly and had an absolutely wonderful stay, we had the extreme good luck to have a wonderful room (huge) which was furnished to the highest standard with a pristine bathroom and large sofa and chairs area, fantastic views out over the lagoons - all in all, Perfect.
This time we were not so lucky, the Hotel is undergoing much needed renovation which is now urgent, as the rooms are looking very shabby indeed, particularly the very poor bathrooms with chipped tiles, stained grouting, mouldy silicon etc. etc.
Yes, the view from the balcony was lovely (inside lagoon and main hotel building), the food is as excellent as the first visit (the choice is more than enough, beautifully cooked, and the fish is to die for) and even 2 months later I am still dreaming about the salads, and the Staff are so nice I wanted to adopt them all, but the Dawar has got to get those renovations hurried up as it feels really sub-standard at the present.
One other thing which I had forgotton about, but unfortunately this time was unable to ignore, was the mattresses. 5 years ago I thought they were hard and it caused a bit of discomfort, but being a bit younger l was able to cope (just). This time round was another thing alltogether, l was in agony every night - my back has not improved with age and neither have those beds, the rooms all have identical mattresses so there is no possibility of a swap, so if you like a hard bed this will be paradise for you! I however think that the ownwers really need to invest in new ones if they want to keep the star grading that the hotel currently has because the quality of those beds was not even close to the little Riad (with no stars) which I stayed in earlier in 2012 when I went to Marrekesh!
All in all, if you want lovely peaceful nights in the outside bar, meeting new people and maybe playing pool with absolutely lovely friendly staff, with fantastic weather and a pristine swimming pool for the days, lovely food and the intimate atmosphere El Gouna has to offer, I can't recommend it highly enough.
Perhaps I had been spoilt in Morrocco because I felt that it was far better value for money, and the airport at Hurghada is now an absolute nightmare - be prepared for the longest queue's you have ever seen at an airport, both arriving and departing!

Room Tip: If I were to go again it would have to be to one of the rooms which has already been re-done and the...
