Sea Stars Apartments
Ranked #10 of 32 Specialty Lodging in Dahab
Reviewed August 27, 2009

This is the best offer you ever get in Dahab or anywhere. I've been travelling in Egypt six times, about 85 to 100 days each time. I\ ve tried several hotels from 3 to 5 stars,
a villa and 4 flats. This spot, Sea Stars, is the cleanest, most quiet, generous and suprising apartmenthotel I,ve seen in Europa , Asia and the Orient. It is something about the intimity with only six flats and lot of space in the apartments, the balconies and the evergreen garden. You are coming from the baasar( just a minut away) or from the beach (two minutes away) and might have had enough of noise and sand. Suddenly you are inside the gate to silence, green grass and flowers. Its amazing.
And so is the gardener and the british couple who runs the place. Always helpful with a smile. - Recommended for single people who want to contemplate, for couple to expierience a new
"honeymoon" or families with kids!

We loved Sea Star Apartments. We are a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teens) and in the middle of 6 months of travel. After spending much of the previous time in hotels, it was a real treat to be in an apartment where we could cook our own food if we wanted. The apartments are in the small Bedouin village of Assala which was close to everything but we felt like we were actually in Egypt instead of any holiday resort by the sea. It was a pleasant walk along the promenade to the restaurants and shops or, if we were tired, a cheap taxi ride home. We were met by Tim and Abdul on our arrival at the nearby supermarket and walked over to the apt in the dark. First impressions were " where the heck are we going?" as the street wasn't paved, goats were wandering about and garbage was strewn about. But daylight and a walk about town put all this into perspective and we soon realized how lucky we were to be here. The apt property has a gate (to keep the goats out) and it feels like a little oasis inside with green grass and a lovely small garden area. The building is quite new and is obviously being well maintained. Abdul is about much of the day keeping an eye on things and tending to the maintenance, and Tim is frequently about (or readily available) to assist with any needs. The apartments are decorated in a clean, fresh style that is pleasing to the eye and comfortable. The bathroom is clean and modern but one has to get used to the 'wet bathroom' concept if you are used to shower stalls as a shower gets the whole bathroom wet. Of course, this is something to expect in Egypt - I guess they wonder at our enclosed stalls when they visit us in Canada! Most of what you might need is steps away in the village - there are several small grocery stores and vegetable and fruit vendors and small restaurants. The water was colder than we expected in April - but was tolerable in a wetsuit. The family did the PADI diving course - this was organized by Tim - our instructor was Olly and it was a very good course - we felt very well taken care of. There was no TV but we considered this a bonus. We very much appreciated the fast Wifi as we had a laptop. There is a lovely sitting area on the roof (but is was windy many of the days we were there so not as useable - I'm sure in less wind it would be lovely). We felt very comfortable and welcome by the local Bedouins. There was always a smile and a 'welcome'. My daughter and I dressed conservatively when in the village, including head scarves and felt this was most respectful to the local culture but we saw most western women wearing all sorts of beach style clothing without encountering any negative attention (as far as we could see). If you are into relaxation, snorkeling or diving, and desert culture, then come to Dahab and stay at Sea Star Apartments. If you want more info - /hamiltogo to www.travelpod.com/membersnfamily

we stayed at the sea star apartments from the 4th till the 10th of april 2009.We arrived via Sharm el Shiekh airport and were collected by a mini bus arranged by Sian and Tim it was clean air conditioned and in perfect condition(not always the case in this country as you will see some scary looking vehicles) It was my first visit to Egypt though my wife had been before and on the way to Dahab I was slightly apprehensive as it appeared we were going into the middle of no where. The road seemed endless but the mountain range and surrounding views were spectacular. It takes about a 1hr and 15 mins to get there but worth the trip. On our arrival at the apartment Tim was there to meet us and explain about the apartment and there was an information booklet with the does and don'ts which was very useful. They even gave us a welcome pack of groceries to tide us over. The apartment was spotless and had everything you needed for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday no tv thank goodness but they do have internet access if needed. We were right in the middle of the town with the local beduin surrounding us with goats and camels as our neighbours. The locals were very friendly and even though the area does look very unkept this is normal for the people who live there. There is rubbish on the streets but it didn't smell and the locals feed there animals on this. Ten minutes from the apartment is the sea front, with spectacular views of saudi arabia and of course the magnificent Red sea. There are a lot of restaurants along the front where you can spend the whole day diving, snorkeling or just relaxing on a sun lounger. You can hire equipment for everything and the cost of eating out every day is very cheap. We spent a day at the Eel Star Gardens hired snorkels and flippers with sun longers ate and drank all day there for about £5.00 per person. We did various trips with a local operator which was much cheaper than going through a tour operator and Tim arranged some intro diving which again was really good value for money wiht himself and another experienced diver. The experience was something you shouldn't miss at this beautiful location of natural beauty. We even did a camel safari for 2hrs and 30 minutes with snorkeling and a visit to the local oasis. The scenery was wonderful but I would recommend only a short journey on these ships of the desert, unless you have a rear like a rhino! There are many restaurants on the sea front and gift shops and you do have to get used to them approaching you constantly to go into their premises but the majority are very nice with it and if you refuse they wish you a good day and hope you will go some other time. We never had any forms of stomach problems and constanly ate out at the local restaurants which were all excellent, plently of it and very good, service can seem slow but it is always worth the wait and any way you're in Dahab by the sea who wants to rush when the time goes too quickly and you have to go home!We loved it so much we plan to go back again next year in may as April tends to be quite windy and this can restrict where you can go snorkeling. The beaches are not white and sandy but if you go to Dahab its not for the beaches but for the scenery and the breathtaking coral and its inhabitants. If you like a laid back holiday with no hustle then this is for you. Remember that this is not Europe and therefore their standards and ratings are very different. Go and see for yourself as we can't wait to go back . A big thank you to Tim and Sian and the people they had look after us as well as the locals who made us feel so welcome . Sorry I haven't posted photos but the pictures on the web site of holiday lettings, sea star aparments dahab are exactly as it is.
Thanks again, Jason, Pauline and Marco.
