Hi All - I visited the Meridien at the end of Feb 2013 and really enjoyed my stay, the hotel is in a beautiful location and the standard of room was excellent... However for those of you considering going, here's some tips/comments you might find useful...
Transfers - the hotel doesn't have a regular shuttle, so I booked with an independant co (check out travelsupermarket) which were a fraction of the cost the hotel offered me by private transfer
Money - I stupidly exchanged money at Stansted and could have agot a much better rate at the banks within Dahab...
Dahab is really quite quiet and chilled - its a fraction of the size of Sharm - so if you're expecting a party town, its definitely not..
Admittedly it was out of season when I went but the hotel was probably a quarter full - so again if you're looking for a livelier place then try the Hilton which seemed much busier when I visited
Rooms - mine was standard and was suberb - I was shown the upgrade option but apart from being closer to the beach and having an outside shower area (??) there wasnt much in it...
The Hotel is a about 10 mins drive from the main center and it isn't advisable to walk unless you're pretty fit, as there's v little shade en route...
The hotel only has a couple of shuttles into town per day - which I'm assuming is a bizarre attempt to keep you to try their restaurant (which is v good the only night I tried)
The gym is v limited.
Windsurfing *** although there is windsurfing onsite and the guys there are excellent, please be aware that they are a separate company - so all usage is chargeable PLUS you need to be at an intermediary stage to surf there. I'm a beginner so had to travel to their sister site at the Hilton on order to brush up on my turns in the lagoon. If you're advanced you'll love it as there's hardly anyone using that part of the sea, and Mistral has great kit available...
Food - plenty of restaurants in Dahab to consider - catering for the tourists taste at around the £20 a head mark, however if you want to try somethimng more authentic - walk along the front to the Lighthouse area and look for Mona Mama, an egyptian place ticked around a corner, that I would never have gone into ordinarily without a local recommending... turns out to be best food of the holiday... and all for £3.50 each :o)
All in all - I would definitely go back - this is my 5th trip to egypt and Le Meridien is probably the highest standard hotel of all, however hopefully the points above will prove useful to anyone considering going.
