“What a pleasant surprise”
Reviewed October 9, 2012

We booked this hotel with a few concerns....but I need not have worried, The hotel, whilst in a little need of some tlc, was comfortable, exceptionally clean and excellent value for money. We went as a group and stayed for 3 weeks which proved to be the most enjoyable holiday we have ever had. The staff cannot be faulted, they were excellent and nothing was too much trouble for them. The banter was good fun with all staff, cleaners, gardeners and so on were all polite with an excellent sense of humour and English a lot better than my arabic. Some reviews have moaned about the food, but I have come to the conclusion they did not stay at the same hotel. The majority of food is cooked fresh in front of you. Each night you had a choice of Pasta with different sauces to chose from, fish, meat including steaks to die for, vegetarian options, salad, soup as well as vegetables, rice, 2 different types of potatoes and so on. The desserts were absolutely beautiful with a huge variety. On our wedding anniversary one of the chefs, Matteo, made us the most beautiful cake and all the restaurant staff came out and sanf to us, it was really moving how much trouble they went to for us and it was much appreciated. The hotel manager Mohab and his boxer dog Rad, were very accomodating and took any comments guests made seriously and acted on them, to the point that one of our party moaned that ice cream was not included with all inclusive for adults, so Mohab sent one of his staff to the shop and bought our whole group ice creams which was far in excess of what I would have expected. The only moan I could write about, is the hassle the massage people give you as they would not take no for an answer and kept on trying to sell a massage to you. The beach was not my cup of tea as it was not very appealing, however saying that, if you are into snorkeling (which I am not), my husband said it was one of the best he has been too for the variety and amount of fish.
Our thanks and respect for both Saed's, Akram, Mohammed (restaurant manager), Mina, Josef and Mohab, this was the best holiday we have ever had because of you all. Mohab your staff are a credit to you.

Stayed for two weeks and have very little complaints. Food was good and fresh although lunch lacked cold meats and salads. Rooms large and cleaned daily drinks and service top notch. The only bad point for us was lack of evening entertainment but still was perfect stay and would highly recommend.

We stayed at the Happy Life 1st - 15th September and can honestly say that it was the most chilled holiday ever. Looking at some of the prevous comments both good and bad we would make the following observations.

The hotel is a little faded in places - the sun loungers on the beach are left a tad untidy but I liked that it was much better than regimented rows. Everywhere is extremely clean and the staff are a delight. Too many to mention - even the security staff always had a hello for us.

The hotel was only 60% occupancy when we were there and the service was exellent - the bar staff took minutes to get to you for your drinks order and once they knew what you wanted it would appear without asking. In the dining rooms you were almost offered too many drinks. Maybe some of the negative comments on this were when the hotel was much fuller.

Food - I always find all-inclusive food repetitive but I would say the quality of the food was probably the best we have had in 5 visits to Egypt - on the nights when you chose your meat from the counter before taking it to be cooked the beef was cut from whole fillets!! We ate in Dahab on two occasions and the food we had there was good quality and cheap so we would recommend that you do this as well. Get a taxi number from reception so you aren't toed to the bus times - it will cost you 30-40LE - £4!

The spa is exellent. Yes you can get the hard sell from the chaps who come round the beach but if you say no they do leave you alone. We hade three massages each include in hot stones which was amaaaaaaaaaazing - thanks to Yasmene and Zidan for these. On the first one we also had a jaccuzzi with bedouin tea thrown in and on the final one we had sauna, steam and jaccuzzi/tea. I had put my back out the week before we went and was in pain when I arrived - but Zidan found both that and my painful shoulders (from working on a pc all day) and eased the pain straight away.

Even if you are a pool person make sure you snorkel at least once. The jetty makes accessing the reef really easy and you can either swim left or right along the reef. There are some areas that are just like swimming in a fish tank and the fish are spectacular - nothing really big a clown coris about 18inches long was the biggest we saw along the shore line but we saw a lion fish, lots of different parrot fish and agenl fish, Nemo's Egyptian cousin, puffer fish and the wonderful sedate Red Sea Banner fish which float long so serenely in pairs!

The reception staff have previously been criticised but we found them really helpful - particularly when we had a problem confirming our return transfer. If you are friendly and smile you get the same response back. I had emailed for a room near the beach a couple of days before we went and got 23A1 which was the closest possible!

Thanks to the English friends met - Les & Margaret - Dave &Jill for your company as well.

We will be back mid September/early October next year.

Room Tip: Blocks 23 and 36 - the latter are suites. Floor A is gound floor and B is the first floor.

I reckon if a hotel meets your expectations then you can't complain.
Having got the gist from reading reviews the hotel was more or less how we imagined.
The staff in the restaurant actually went above and beyond.Always on hand to clear plates, serve drinks and meet your every need in a willing and friendly manner.
The Head member of staff in the restaurant was exceptionally good.
The chefs were excellent too.
The actual food was alright.Plenty of it and often cooked or prepared there and then in the evening.I thought they went to great lengths to prepare a great variety of sweets, puddings and cakes.
The cleaners did a sterling job and or room was immaculate.
The various pool bars all made a great cappuchino.
We found the reception staff helpful and although we didn't make use of the activities the animators appeared to do a great job.
The location was excellent.Being a birdwatcher and keen walkers we went out every day, south along the dramatic coastal path, north towards the Mercure and also to Wadi Gnai which is a 2 hour walk altogether from the hotel and back again. The Wadi is stunningly beautiful and peaceful.
We went into Dahab on the excellent shuttle bus which was reliable and free.We used it every day.
We are not great sun lounger loungers but because we enjoyed using the diving jetty so much on the beach we parked up there most days.
Mention has been made of passing camels and bead sellers. We actually enjoyed seeing the camels going past and the bead sellers didn't bother us once we told them we were not in the market for beads.
We used to sit as far away from the jetty as possible to the left.It was quieter down that end.
Before we went I emailed the hotel and asked for a quiet room i.e. as far away from the children's pool as possible.
When we arrived the receptionist said he had got the email and had indeed allocated a quiet room.We had no disturbances all week.
As far as the birds were concerned there are plenty on site or along the abovementioned walks including Dahab water treatment works. The latter is 250 yards from the shuttle bus dropping off point.
Lots of interesting species seen including Whiskered Tern,Caspian Tern,Red Back Shrike,Great Grey Shrike,Green Heron,Black Winged Stilt,Squacco Heron,Collared Flycatcher,Hooded,Isabelline,and Pied Wheatear,Rough Legged Buzzard,Yellow Wagtail,Rock Martin,Red Rump Swallow,Rose Coloured Starling,Olivacious Warbler,Spotted Flycatcher,Kingfisher,Hooded Crow,and a few other species including the hotel's flock of Laughing Doves.
Felt completely relaxed during our week here and enjoyed our holiday.
