This is a decent place to stay for people on a budget in Dahab. It’s not a fancy 5 star hotel, and is pretty much just a step or two up from a hostel, but as long as you set your expectations accordingly and don’t pay over the odds to stay, you’ll have a good stay. I must say we were a bit shocked when we arrived – we pulled up in a taxi at the rear of the hotel in a street filled with rubbish and broken/incomplete infrastructure, but most of the back streets of Dahab are like that and the inside and front of the hotel were fine. It’s shabby rather than polished, but it grows on you!
Location: It’s very centrally located right in the middle of the sea front area and it’s especially handy for diving as the hotel has a very good diving school attached and you basically walk 30 feet across the promenade and you’re in the water.
Facilities: The hotel offers very cheap dorms, but I stayed in a dedicated triple room. Or at least it started off as a triple room, after a few days they squeezed in another bed, I don’t know why. My room was on the ground floor with access straight to the pool, which would have been great if the pool hadn’t been at a sub zero temperatures. It was far too cold to use during the visit, the sea was much warmer and I was in and out of that all week. Shame as it looked a nice pool, but I believe it’s not uncommon for pools in Egypt to be unheated, which is fine in summer but makes them useless in winter. The rooms had little balconies you could sit out on at night, which was a nice touch.
The wi fi in the hotel was decent in the reception and bar, but quite flaky and unreliable in the rooms. The hotel claimed to have a gym and steam room, but these are not actually in the hotel. You have to go round the back of the hotel and up the street into a completely separate gym. The gym was quite small and the steam room is a tiny 1 or 2 person thing that is off the changing rooms, so it’s not mixed sex.
Cleanliness: This wasn’t the best. The bathroom had definitely not been cleaned on our arrival. The shower wouldn’t drain at all until I pulled out a huge pile of hair clogging it up. Yuck. And talking of a shower, there wasn’t one. There was a very small, quite dirty bath, with no shower curtain and a shower head attached to the bath. So showering basically involved getting the bathroom quite wet. Towels were changed daily, but always seemed ragged or marked or both.
Food/Drink: Breakfast was the same each day, and they sometimes ran low on items later in the morning, but there was a few choices and the staff would make omelettes and delicious pancakes on request. I enjoyed the breakfasts generally, but had a bit of a horror moment when I fished out a larvae from my fried aubergine that had been unfortunate enough to be in the aubergine when it was fried. It can happen in the best of places I guess, but did put me off a bit, it must be said! We only ate one other meal in the hotel apart from Breakfast, which was a cheese toastie. This was completely rubbish with stale bread and hardly any cheese. Food in Dahab is generally good, so I wouldn’t recommend eating here.
The Churchill Bar in the Hotel is really cool. Drink is cheap and the staff are friendly. They do the odd special night such as quizzes. I enjoyed having out and people watching from the rooftop part of the bar. I’d highly recommend this as a cool hang out place.
Staff: Friendly and courteous, especially in the bar.
In conclusion, this is a decent hostel hotel. It doesn’t offer the 5 star quality of a top resort hotel, but it does offer you a prime, beach front location at a bargain price. It has quirks and imperfections galore, but nothing critically wrong and for what it offers I’d stay there again.
