“Don't miss this wonderful place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2013

Whatever you do - do not miss this wonderful place. What a story - moving two incredible temples 600 metres, piece by piece, to avoid being flooded and hidden for evermore. The view of the outside is outstanding and the interiors are simply exquisite. Don't be put off going even if you have to travel by coach (3-4 hours escorted across the Sahara). In fact the plane trip from Aswan may be more taxing - especially on your wallet.

“Go if given the opportunity - make the effort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2013

This is a simply breath-taking excursion, by bus or by air. We opted for the coach trip as it was a third of the price and actually didn't save much time at all (in comparison to those on our boat who chose the air route), it's just less of a lie-in with a 5am departure! At least on the bus, you have desert views and a stop to glimpse on an excellent mirage on the way back to Aswan. I imagine the approach to the airport over the temples is spectacular though.

The temple of Rameses II at Abu Simbel was the most impressive we saw in a 10 day trip around Egypt, having visited Karnak, Luxor, Philae etc - Abu Simbel has added 'awe' when you take into account the setting by Lake Nasser and additionally start to comprehend that this is not it's original position!

We were rather fortunate, with our company paying for a private convoy, which allowed us to see both temples after the first groups, but before those visiting by plane. In fact, there were 23 in our group and apart from 10 minutes after arriving; had the entire site to ourselves. This really does add to the ambience, creating that 'gobsmacked' feeling with nobody else around. We could have stayed there longer than the 2 hours, definitely worth every penny.

“Worth the trek”

It's far, isolated, remote, both in place and in time. The ancient architecture impresses, the modern salvage astonishes. Views of the area are timeless.

“What to say... amazing..”

Both temples are 3250 years old and still in very good shape. A must see for every traveler. Try to fly if you can afford; convoy driving from Aswan takes 4+4 hours in the middle of the desert.

Consider flying directly (with a stop in Aswan) from Cairo, and on your way back stop in Aswan for an additional day. If you have time, take a Nile Cruise to Luxor and spend at least 2 days in Luxor before you continue your trip to where ever you are heading to next.

“Awe-inspiring”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2013 via mobile

Wow! From the first view from the plane I knew I was about to see the Egypt I've dreamed of. Huge, intricate and self-aggrandising it is a gobsmacking monument well worth visiting. Not to be missed!
