My wife and I stayed at Big Ralph's for 4 days in Feb, 2013. If you're looking for a five star all inclusive, this is probably not for you. If, however, you're looking for good value then in our view this is it. The rooms are small, but very clean, with air and the food is great, as you've probably read and the hosts are very friendly and helpful. The hotel is a little off the beach at the opposite end from the Yacht club, but it's really a short walk to it, the main beach, restaurants and Commisariato. We enjoyed the walks because it let us get a feel for the place and the Ecuadorians. We felt very safe the whole time that we were there. There's an Italian restaurant and a coffee house close by. The coffee house (The Common Ground) has become a meeting place for real estate agents and their Gringo clients who seem to be invading Ecuador at the moment and it was interesting to have a coffee and watch the action as people consulted lap tops and tablets with listing info and then zipped off for real estate tours. We will definitely stay there when we return to Salinas.

I spent 4 nights At Ralph and Andrea's place and was welcomed and felt at home as soon as I walked through the gate. The room was large, bright and clean with a comfortable bed and lots of hot water. The hostel is located away from the Malecon but within easy walking distance. The hostel is quiet at night so one can get a good night's rest with air conditioning in every room. One of the highlights is that Chef Ralph is an excellent cook and the restaurant is full of expats and locals most evenings. One small negative were the tiny mosquitoes that seemed to be everywhere, but some repellent solves that small problem quite easily. I would recommend Big Ralph's to anyone planning on visiting Salinas.

We feel very lucky to have found Big Ralphs. What a great place to stay.
We were there 7 nights and we felt like part of the family right from the start.
Ralph and Andréa are warm, welcoming and very outgoing hosts. They went out of their way to accommodate us and help us find everything we could need.
The rooms are clean and comfortable with private baths and a great HOT shower.
P.S. Thanks Grandpa for your trip to the mud baths!!

We spent 4 nights at Big Ralphs and were delighted with the cleanliness, friendliness, and just about everything at Big Ralphs. Located a few blocks off the beach, it was perfect for us...quiet and homey. The food that comes out of Big Ralph's kitchen is superb...locals dining there said it was the best in Salinas. And it was certainly the best food that WE had in Salinas. And clean. Clean is really important to me, and the kitchen is immaculate and completely open, with every action on display. Fun to watch Ralph's culinary ballet!

Both Ralph and Andrea provided a great deal of help with travel plans...Andrea even spent an hour on the phone with LAN Airlines, trying to sort out an issue on our behalf with their Spanish speaking customer service associates. Far above and beyond expectations! When we go back to Salinas, we will go back to Big Ralph's!

We stayed 5 nights not knowing what to expect as we had not stayed in the malecon area previously. Our stay at this family run Hostel was extremely enjoyable. The rooms were clean, the staff helped in any way we asked (taxi's directions, stores, recommendations, etc...). Ralph and Andrea were interesting to speak with when they had a few minutes to spare.

The location was close enough to walk to the malecon and restaurants, but not so close that the huste and bustle was bothersome.

Ralph, Andrea, and their staff make you feel right at home from the moment you walk in. Just a few blocks from the beach. Ralph is a great cook. Looked forward to breakfast each morning after a walk on the beach. They have an on site restaurant that is very good. Family run. Andrea is from Ecuador and was a great help to us planning our activities for the day. Wifi worked fine. They only have local TV at this time, but there is so much to do in the area, you won't miss it at all!

Room Tip: Not a bad room in the place.

Just did an overnight stay in beautiful Salinas and stayed at Big Ralph's Hostal. Ralph and his wife were very hospitable and their hostal is an up and coming small sized place which fit the needs of my wife and two kids perfectly. Our room had a queen size bed with single bunks for the kids and was very clean. The shower in the bathroom has the hottest water I have had in Ecuador yet.
The hostel has a small restaurant and bar at the front as Ralph is an English trained Chef. Regrettably we didn't get time to eat dinner there.
All in all this place was better than most of the hostels I've stayed in with added personal charm and service. I would definitely stay here again.

The only problem noteworthy is the television reception in our room wasn't good. This is only a young business which will build and improve in time so i'm sure this will be sorted when time permits.
