The things we saw were amazing, howler monkeys, Panama hat demonstration, San Lorenzo. Our bus, however, was filthy and in need of repair. The brakes sounded like they would go out at any moment. Great itinerary!

Our great tour guide, Jonathan, took us to all the best of Manta: the fish market, the rainforest and Montecristi Panama hat demo and museum. The best was the rainforest. It had been dry so we did the full trail: the first section was flat and we learned much from the park guide along the way, then we went down a lot of steps (wood guides driven into the ground) to the stream for an hour long stream hike over rocks. The water was quite low, easy to navigate over the rocks, but you need to be fit, no knee issues. We saw about 10 monkeys high in the trees. Jonathan knows his stuff-all the history and culture of his city!

We had a shore excursion to Manta from our cruise ship. In the terminal we chose a tour with OPT ( Ocean Pacific Tours). We paid US$50 for a tour with just the two of us in a comfortable air conditioned mini bus. Our guide, Gabriella, took us to the Fish market, Ecuador is the tuna capital of the World. It was lively, fun and interesting with no bad smells or flies. A testament to how fresh the fish is .
We then went on to Montechristi , the home of the production of Panama hats. We saw a demonstration of them being made, a painstaking and back braking process for the craftsmen. We then had an opportunity to visit some local craft shops and of course make that important purchase of a Panama hat! We were then taken to a square in town to see a variety of craft stalls and soak up the local atmosphere,.
Our guide Gabriella was friendly, helpful when we needed to change money at the bank and help us with our transaction and her knowledge of Ecuador was never ending.
Such a lovely day out and just the two of us. On our return to the ship, people had paid more than double what we paid with 50 people in the group. No brainer !

Fernando was an excellent guide- funny, flexible and a wonderful translator. He was a great help in the rain forest where my rusty Spanish was not sufficient to understand guide. He also made interesting stops at the lighthouse and pacocha Museum, where his language skills were invaluable. We had a very generous and tasty lunch at San Mateo beach, and Fernando helped us set up some kayak rentals for the following day.
