“Top notch getaway”

If you're looking for a break from everything in a little piece of paradise, then Alandaluz is for you. This ecolodge is built on the beach with great care taken to preserve the natural habitat of the area. The log cabanas are excellent quality for their price, and the cocktail Alandaluz is outstanding. The restaurant is simple with delicious food from their eco-farm. The lodge is located close to the national park and isla de la plata. Highly recommended for couples and families. It's about 15km from Puerto Lopez and a taxi costs 5$ (the bus 1$)

Room Tip: The simple garden view cabanas are quite nd verz good value

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2011

We stayed at Alandaluz for 4 nights in November - the cloudy/rainy season. Although there is a small pool, the weather was much too cold for us to use it or even to swim in the sea. The main building (restaurant and communal area and reception) is a beautifully constructed bamboo and palm leaf structure open round the sides. The grounds are rather small (relevant for birders) but just along the beach was a small lagoon with interesting bird life. The accommodation was either in individual cabins or larger blocks with a number of rooms. Our cabin was spacious and comfortable, with a shower room ensuite with hot water most of the time and lots of open air. It was close enough to the road that from about 5 a.m. the buses and trucks roaring past were disturbing.
The food in the restuarant was delicious with freshly made fruit juices of a wide variety and a good range of fish platters. The staff were very friendly and hospitable and were readily able to get cars for us to be taken to some of the local sites of interest: Agua Blanca on the edge of the Machalilla Park - a volcanic pool (very refreshing for a swim on the one hot day we had) and some great woods for birding. We were lucky to find Rene - a knowledgable local birding guide who took us around the river and forest at Ayampe with great success.
Alandaluz is about 6km from Puerto Lopez a noisy little town which we were very glad not to be close to.
As a pleasant base from which to explore the area, we can give a warm recommendation.

Room Tip: Ask for a cabin well away from the road

I spent a month on a volunteer there. Basically it is an ecovillage built entirelly on bamboo and their athmosphere is so special it makes the Hosteria an ideal place for honeymoons in that zone of the country.

They've got a restaurant specialist on ecuatorian food. There's a dish called "Viudo" ( widow) served inside a bamboo sprout...really unique.

The've got several types of accomodations. The best one being the Colibri, but in general all of them were fine.

The garden is awesome...and their owner is proud of it. Every night there was a nightfire on the beach...someone playing the guitar and singing, so it's an excellent place for geting in love

Alandaluz is an amazing, peaceful place. I stayed in a 3-room cabin with hammocks, a composting toilet, a comfy bed for $29, which is more expensive for Ecuador, but well worth the peace, quiet, beautiful beach, landscape, pool, etc. I would go back there again!

The cabañas are very nice, but expensive, the cheapest at 29. The grounds show signs of neglect, and the beach has litter on it only about 30 metres from the path out from the complex. I didnt find it a friendly place at all, it felt empty and the service wasnt that good either, considering what you are paying. The food however in the evening was nice, and it could be exploited much more.

This hotel is beautiful, was clean, interesting, eco-friendly, etc. Very cool place to stay. It feels like everything is open to the jungle and bats will literally fly in overhead while you're eating breakfast in the dining room; however, this means the human animals can also come in. I almost hate to write this review, because I know it will put a dent in the tourism industry in Puerto Lopes / Pto Rico area, but I feel I must warn other travellers. Here it is : while we were sitting in the lodge on a saturday evening, 4 armed gunmen waltzed right into the lobby and started rounding up all employees and guests. We were lined up on the dining room floor face down at gun point for at least 30 min while they looted and stole everything off us. Several guests were brought to their room at gunpoint and forced to open the door for them while they stole everything. This was a most terrifying experience. There was no security guards, no video cameras, not even a locked gate to deter them. How sad, this place is so beautiful, but it 100% unsecured. If you're considering staying here, please contact the ecolodge and inquire about the current security status. Everyone was shocked this happened and said it was the first time in 19 years. I'm hoping after this they will add security to the hotel. If they secure the entire place, it will be an incredible, beautiful lodge to stay in. I hope for everyone's sake, they add security. I have a feeling all the other ecolodges in the area are probably also unsecured. Inquire about security before staying at a place. It could happen to you!

We were disappointed because they are proud to be an eco lodge. There is nothing eco about this lodge (eg. energy saving lamp only at the reception, they sell corals and shells in the shop ...). The service was poor and a general lack in motivation was obious. No internet but a contract with the german mass tourist agency Neckermann. Although the location is beautiful. There a lots of other lodges around.
