“Relaxing evening at Vistalmar”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2013

I've been staying at Vistalmar for several years. I normally stay on my trips to Manta when I want to get away or don't feel like driving back up the coast to my house. The rooms are very spacious and always very clean.

I've stayed in every room and each room is different. The penthouse is a small apartment, with wonderful views of the pacific ocean from the living room/kitchen with beautiful ceramic and glass artwork in every room. There is a pull out couch in the living room big enough for a couple small children or an adult. It's a little smaller than a twin bed in width. The penthouse is not much more than the other rooms, so if you feel like splurging a little, go for it! One of the cabanas, either behind the office or above the office has a huge four post bed wrapped with a beautiful lace netting and is decorated with rustic furniture. The rooms on the second and third floor of the four story building are very open and spacious with a kitchen, living room and bedroom. The bottom floor room is small, only a bedroom with a small sitting area and a bathroom. This one may leave you with a little lack of privacy feeling as the sliding glass door is at ground level and the blinds don't block out all the light. Finally, the farthest cabana, in the corner after you walk passed the pool and lounge area is small in comparison to the others, but open with only a bedroom and small sitting area, but has a large bathroom with skylight and a huge walk in shower.

I've never seen anyone in the pool, although it's a gorgeous infinity pool with a small island in the middle. The flowers and gardens are absolutely stunning as is the very small ancient art museum under the gazebo. Breakfast is typical Ecuadorian, bread, coffee, juice, eggs, butter, and marmalade. If you are not outside by 8AM for the host to ask you where you would like to eat, they call your room and ask if you would like to eat in your room or outside, then deliver to your choice.

The neighborhood is very quiet with a very secure feeling. There are guards at several of the buildings near the hotel. The little restaurant on the corner, one block from the hotel has great hamburgers, steaks, and chicken. You can walk to Kentucky Fried Chicken, Supermaxi (grocery store), Fybeca (pharmacy), Mi Jugete (toy store), Subway sandwich shop, and a host of other small shops in the small outdoor mall three blocks from the hotel. Within four blocks of the hotel there are numerous bars and restaurants. Six blocks away you will enter the "Zona Rosa" where you will find the discos and bars frequented by locals and a few tourist as well. Taxis are plentiful within two blocks or have the hotel call one for you. Don't pay more than $2 for most taxi rides unless you are going to the Paseo shopping mall, which may cost $2.50 or $3 depending on the time of day.

They do offer secure parking inside the garage, but get there early as they only have room for three or four cars. I've parked my truck in one of the outside spots on many occasions and only use the inside garage if I have some items in the back I would like to keep. :)

This is a great hotel for a nice relaxing weekend in Manta. If you have kids, they will love the pool, but it doesn't have a shallow end (will update if I am wrong), so you will have to join them. Tell them Señor Bart sent you!

Room Tip: The best rooms fill up fast, so book in advance or you will be stuck with the bottom floor "clo...

This is a small hotel, with a choice of cabins or conventional rooms. Clean, comfortable and very friendly, set in a quiet cul-de-sac.Views from the well kept gardens and infinity pool over the Pacific Ocean. Mario, the owner, has a policy of no alcohol being brought into the hotel, so there are no problems with unruly behaviour. Perfect location both for families and couples. Convenient for local restaurants which Mario will recommend. The beach can be accessed from steps some 250 yards away. Large well stocked supermarket within walking distance.

The hotel's setting is stunning; the infinity pool with the ocean in the background is just lovely. We stayed in #8, on the third floor, with great views of the ocean. Cons: Service in the breakfast period was slow, and all Ecuadoran hotels seem to server the same thing: juice, bread, scrambled eggs, coffee; we stayed in high season (Aug). and it was $145 after taxes, which is pricey. Pros: Small fridge in room is great--there's a Supermaxi a few blocks away where you can stock up; A/C worked great in the bedroom; they let us store our luggage in a back room and use the pool after we had checked out. After spending a week in a cabana by the beach, the little modern touches we appreciated the modern touches of this hotel.

Room Tip: Room Nine is on the top-- best views and no foot traffic; rooms 1 and 2 are by the pool on ground le...

We stayed two nights at Vista al Mar. The view of the sea, gardens and gazebo were great. Our room, however, was exposed due to the enclosed glass bathroom and insufficient window treatments. We felt it lacked privacy which is very important to us. The breakfast consisted of 2 pieces of white bread, toasted only on one side, a pat of butter and marmalade, instant coffee and a scrambled egg. The surrounding area was in very close proximity to some restaurants, a SuperMaxi and a few shops. We enjoyed our meals at the Hotel Oro Verde, an upscale property, within walking distance to Vista al Mar.

This hotel is perfectly located, it has an spectacular view, the pool is small but is not bad, but the service isn't the best out there, they need to be more organized, and they don't have any variation in the breakfast, it is, all days, scrambled eggs, coffee with milk or water, a glass of juice, toasts, butter and jelly.

This hotel was fantastic. It had a great view of the ocean. There were no direct stairs from the hotel to the beach, but there were some right nearby. Technically hotel oro verde seemed like it would be the perfect location, but vista al mar was substantially cheaper maybe only a block away. It was close to the supermaxi so you could buy water and keep it in the refridgerator they provided. The rooms and hotel grounds were kept quite clean, and it was a very relaxing atmosphere. I arrived at 9:00 am and since they had room they let me check in early which was nice. A couple of downsides was that there was no hot shower (at least not in my room. It was always hot outside but I like having the option of a hot shower), you couldn't purchase any nice cocktails at the hotel (I thought it would be nice to just lounge with a pina colada) and the wifi didn't work very well. Breakfast was also included. The staff were all really friendly and helpful. One other nice thing is they had a pool and a really nice open area outside that you could just sit and relax with grass as opposed to cement. The hotel is also quite small, so there aren't a ton of people around.

I was considering staying at either a cheaper hotel or hotel lun fun near tarqui beach; however, upon arrival I was definitly glad I was near/walking distance of the marcielago beach. Tarqui beach seemed a bit sketchy, dirty and smelly. It would have been a bit of a walk to the other beach or a taxi would have been necessary. I would for sure recommend a place near Marcielago beach as opposed to tarqui even though it's a bit more expensive.

This was my 2nd time at Vista al Mar and re-enforced my 1st impression...this is one sweet spot.
The location is very good and the grounds...small...are beautiful. From the entrance you can see the ocean framed nicely by the palm trees.
My room, in the new tower, was clean, well appointed, comfortable with a view of the ocean.
The staff are warm, friendly and very helpful. The lady at the desk helped me make last-minute changes to my trip. She called Cuenca and helped me re-book my reservations.
For me, I felt that I got very good value for my money. Worth every penny.
The breakfast served was adequate and sufficient...scrambled eggs, toast, juice and coffee. Coffe was instant coffee but very flavorful.
Overall - a lovely, warm, unassuming hotel
