“The Charles Darwin Research Centre is not what one may think ...”
Reviewed October 9, 2012 via mobile

Contrary to many people's belief, the Charles Darwin Research Centre is a privately owned facility that is NOT open to the public. What is open to the public is a tortoise breeding centre which also includes land iguanas. This is worth a visit but don't feel disappointed if you miss out - there is no museum or information bays relating to Darwin or his work and tortoises and land iguanas can be seen elsewhere.

“So-so”
Reviewed September 26, 2012

The Charles Darwin Research Station (or Tortuga Bay) is a place to go to on the day you arrive in Puerto Ayora. It is free, most likely a short walking distance from your hotel and can be done without a guide. The place is small and is a good introduction to the tortoises and iguanas you'll find in the Galapagos. There is however a trip to a tortoise farm which was included with our tour of the Highlands (you see them in natural habitat), as well as Isabella island (you'll see a larger variety of tortoises) that is much better than here. I agree with other reviewers that this place needs improvement and I also wish there was a presentation of the actual research done here (but then I guess, if this was so, they'd start charging a fee). We enjoyed the place anyway and on our way out, we followed a group of local people on their way to a small beach near the research station where we spent a couple of hours enjoying the waters and watching surfers ride the waves.

“Wonderful learning experience”

It was not crowded. We were able to stay as long as we wished and photograph the animals and plants at our own pace. A once in a lifetime experience!

“on a Cruise to Galapagos Islands, Ecuador”
Reviewed September 22, 2012

I've been in Ecuador and I've visited the Galapagos Islands. My dream was always to visit these islands since childhood. Galapagos Cruise was so amazing, incredible wildlife so close, nature and landscape. I love those animals. My best experience in Ecuador. Truly beautiful memories for a whole life. Also you can realize such an experience with Imagine Ecuador on the Galapagos Cruise. I recommend!

“Nothing special”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

Consistent with what we heard, the place is over hyped. While they do have several large tortugas, I'd recommend visiting the turtles in the highlands where they are just as large and more free to roam.
