“Beautiful”
Reviewed February 27, 2013

Las Grietas are absolutely worth the hike. It's particularly cool to arrive in the cool, clear waters of Las Grietas after having hiked through arid desert. You don't even need a snorkel-- the water is so crystal clear you can see the fish from the surface! The only downside of this spot is that it's often hard to find a good place to sit alongside the water when you're done swimming. Go early in the morning to have a peaceful experience.

“OMG! Please, please do not attempt to go here if it has rained.”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

You will kill yourself and end your trip! Please take this warning seriously. It is slippery red mud, like ice, on jagged volcanic rock with picker bushes along side (the only thing to grab onto when you slip). The canyon pool itself is pretty, just a typical canyon pool. If you have never done such a thing and it is bone dry out it would be a nice way to hike and waste time. Otherwise skip it. The only reason I am alive and in one piece is because it just wasn't my day to break bones. I fell numerous times and was completely out of control for most of the hike. Maybe spikes on your shoes? Prepare to get very dirty from head to toe - which you can wash off in the pool - but then you have to return thru the same mess.

“dangerous walk over the rocks”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

This is hard to get to, to get there is a path of sharp, uneven, unsteady volcanic rocks. Once you get there it is pretty, cold clear water. We saw only one fish. There is only a small swimming area which is lovely if there are only 1-5 people. By the time we left there were nearly 30. It is hard to get in and out of the water due to the slippery rocks. If you are agile and fit, it is worth it but go in the morning before 10 am to avoid the crowds. If you are looking for a relaxing swim - this is not the place.

“Part of the Bay Tour”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

The recommendable Bay Tour includes at the end the rather long walk to the Grietas. Not difficult, but you have to watch every step over the lava rocks. Nice view of this water canyon, but when we arrived the place was overcrowded, hard to find a spot. But spectacular some youths jumping into the water from the 10 meter rim, very courageous! If you don't feel walking stay at the bar at the beginning of the walk on the rim of the salt lake.
