We hiked up the Sierra Negra volcano and on to the Chica Volcano with an REI Adventure tour. We started in the cool mist, with a somewhat muddy trail, but eventually came out into the sunshine, where the path dried out. The end of the trail and path to Chica is all hard, new lava, so really good soles on your hiking boots or shoes is a must. No sandals or flips if you want to keep your toes.
It took us about 4 1/2 hours to hike up and down, so it isn't something you can see in just an hour. Be prepared for changing conditions, too.
The views are wonderful, and on a clear day you can see forever.
