“WOW! Amazing Oasis In Cotacachi Ecuador”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

My wife and I designed a trip that started in Buenos Aires and then we spent time in Patagonia. We were thinking of going to Machu Picchu on our return to the States, but we opted instead for the small town of Cotacachi in Ecuador. After exchanging several emails with a very polite, helpful and charming Clemencia we decided to try something a little different. We spent 3 nights at La Mirage and our choice for picking an out of the way spot was rewarded with a very special paradise that my wife and I were able to enjoy.
We were picked up at the new Quito Airport by Rafael who safely drove us to the hotel, stopping at the Equator and pointing out all that was interesting. We immediately hired him to drive us around the area on Saturday and show us the sights including the marketplace in Otavalo. We arrived in the evening and were told that they upgraded us (for no reason) to a suite. Our suite was amazing ... it consisted of two rooms, two bathrooms and two working fireplaces. The suite was furnished very tastefully and we were very happy staying there. My wife and I usually stay at "high end" hotels and La Mirage clearly stands up to the very best. The restaurant served us amazing breakfasts and dinners. The menu was diverse and we were amazed by the quality of the food along with the talent of the chef. By the way, the chef stopped by our table every evening to make sure we were happy with his dinner.
Breakfasts are very good and very enjoyable. We ate watching peacocks and humming birds just outside our large picture window that overlooked the gardens. There are gardens everywhere on this large property and it is truly an oasis in Ecuador.
One of the nicest touches that the hotel offered us was at the end of the dinner. We were asked while signing the check if we would like a fire in our fireplace and if so, which one or both. We opted for a fire in our bedroom fireplace each night, and when we walked back to our room, there was a blazing fire that had just been lit for us.
We found that staying three nights and having two full days to explore the area was perfect. Rafael gave us a wonderful tour of the marketplace, the culture and the volcanos. We also spent a day wandering the main street in Cotacachi which is a fascinating town with friendly people. Living in New York City, we rarely end up buying things on our vacations, but Cotacachi proved to be the exception. Stylish high-quality leather goods can be purchased for very little money. We bought leather jackets and coats for our kids and my wife bought a few for herself.
This is a very fine resort with an amazing staff. My very strong suggestion to anyone who reads my review is to "take the leap" and go to this off the beaten path resort. If you do, then you too will be rewarded with a great experience. This is a spot that my wife and I will always remember fondly.

Wonderful is my first thought....everything here is magical. We were picked up by their private driver in Quito, and had a nice drive to Cotacachi, the home of La Mirage. It was about a 3 hour drive.....we stopped in Calderon and Mitad del Mundo on the way. We were able to have one foot on both sides of the equator....
When we arrived at La Mirage, we were instantly greeted with a warm hand cloth and a cool drink, then shown to our room. The room is gorgeous. And meticulously clean....we had a light lunch that first day and were greeted by peacocks on the lawn. Meal service is excellent and the food better. We rushed to the spa to set up services for our three day stay....they, too, are amazing.
Dinners in the dining room are so excellent. Service is without compare anywhere in the world! Flowers are beautiful on the grounds and in the rooms. Rose petals decorate most everywhere.
If you are ever in this area, this is a do not miss! I did not rate the fitness center 5 stars only because it is small, but you can get a workout....amd you will need it with the delicious dining

La Mirage is one of the most beautiful hotels I've visited. The staff are wonderful and eager and willing to accommodate any request. Every meal was perfectly presented and well planned. The pancakes were some of the best, and the group I was with looked forward to the breakfast each morning. The gardens around the property were colorful and filled with birds and beautiful flowers. This is truly an unexpected paradise and a great place to relax and rejeuvenate. The spa is amazing and offers one of the most diverse spa menus I've ever seen. Each room of the spa is decorated ornately and for the particular treatment that takes place there. La Mirage is a must for any and all travelers visiting Cotacachi.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are different and charming in their own way.

While we were here, we can hear the sound of nature. A golden miracle is a way of describing this place. You can not imagine a natural environment. This place is an Ecuadorian pleasure. We were to hace a lunch, and we were surprised of the atention the personal showed. They scorted us to the table and you have no idea how the food was. The spa is another surprise. Its a place for relaxing and having a wonderful time watching the garden, the details, and the history of the place. You can find the experience like an undiscovered service.

After a rather challenging week of diving on a live-a-board dive boat in the Galapagos, La Mirage turned out to be the perfect place to relax and unwind. My wife and I had the opportunity to spend 3 wonderful days being spoiled by the attentive staff and enjoying the wonderful food.

The facility is very welcoming like a very large garden. Lots of flowers, birds, humming birds and peacocks. The message in the spa was one of the high lights. I highly recommend the message for two.

We had the good fortune to attend the new years eve dinner which lasted for 3 hours. The chef and his staff did just an outstanding job treating us to the best meal we have ever had. An outstanding performance!! Then followed by traditional fireworks and the burning of the puppets.

Hot water bottles in the bed, a fire started and waiting along with chocolates at bed time were special touches.

They also have access to some excellent tour guides. Oswaldo showed us the country side, took us to the markets and helped us negotiate some really fair deals with the vendors.

So if you are looking to learn more about Ecuador, eat excellent food, be treated like royalty and just really relax, then La Mirage is a great place to start.

Room Tip: Our room was close to the spa which turned out to be convenient. Just throw on your bathrobe &...

A broke writer and a retired schoolteacher bent on covering the globe can't afford to stay here but neither can they afford to miss the experience of La Mirage, situated in an unlikely spot out of downtown Cotacachi, up a seeming country lane lined with bougainvillaea over brick walls.

For some crazy reason, we suspected we could probably survive having lunch here, financially speaking. (We did.)

We each chose an appetizer, a main, a dessert, and a beverage.

My companion chose a quinoa/crab timbal with herb coulis, followed by shrimp in coconut cream, followed by chocolate cake with sugared walnuts, raisins and home-made ice cream in a chocolate funnel, accompanied with two cups of *te de cedron*.

I chose a goat-cheese and olive tart, followed by guinea pig (the national dish) over potato/onion cake with tomato/avocado/bean salad and toasted-pumpkin-seed dipping sauce, followed by "carpaccio de fresas"--sliced strawbs in amaretto with sweet-basil sorbet, accompanied by a single glass of Chilean chardonnay.

We both asked for non-carbonated water, and received a single glass each.

We were asked at the outset from whence we came. We thought this was just polite conversation until a Canadian flag was set upon our table. Taking notice of other tables, we saw that the most common pattern, at least today, was an Ecuadorean flag with a North American or European flag: this must be where the locals take their guests. Nice touch, and no doubt helpful to the wait staff, as it's easy to send English-speaking staff to tables like ours.

The meal was prefaced by the servers' clearing away most of the dishes from the elegantly set table in preparation for bringing us first 2 slices of garlic bread--the bread was nothing special but what was on it was perfect--and then an amuse-bouche of tiny pieces of chicken and vegetables in an unidentified but delicious sauce, served in music boxes!

When the server sets a music box going in front of you which contains two bites of seductively delicious food prettily arranged amidst a few slices of fresh, colorful vegetables, your expectations move up to the top of your life's restaurant experience, believe me.

After the appetizer, we were served a palate cleanser of a tiny scoop of home-made sorbet atop a single slice of strawberry while we awaited the "piece de resistance."

Service was the most polished and correct we've seen so far in Ecuador: these folks know what the positioning of your fork and knife means, how long to wait before setting the next item on the table, from which side of the diner to remove used dishes, and so forth.

Servings were, mercifully, on the small side; so we felt pleasantly filled but not stuffed. We finished our meal by a picture-taking tour of the lovely grounds, snapping peacocks, hummingbirds, flowers and--for me--my beloved ironwood trees, dancing hula in the wind.

Nice touch--nothing commercial ever appeared on the table. No teabag, no water bottle, no wrapped pats of butter or ketchup packets. Sweeteners did appear for tea, in their obnoxious little suits, but hey, one of them was stevia, not something most restaurants include.

Small criticisms: $2 for water? $3.75 for that second cup of tea? Oh, well, the entrees came out less than expected and so did the glass of wine. The total came out to something less than we expected.

My companion concurred with other reviewers of this hotel in that she would be glad to stay here anytime. I thought it would be a great place to stage a wedding--there's a lovely chapel--but personally I don't go for tons of upholstered European furniture and paintings reminiscent of the 1800s or earlier. The decor is 100% well done--just not my style. I loved the lull of the background music on the sumptuous grounds, however.

I'll return here anytime any extra $100 or two is burning a hole in my pocket. Unforgettably good.

Room Tip: All the tables have good views of the grounds, but near the windows the peacocks come to sit right b...

This was one of the most beautiful properties I have visited. The landscaping was immaculate, the rooms were like casitas and there was a lot of privacy. The food was excellent and the service superb. The dining room was beautiful, classy, yet comfortable even if you like to dress casually. Breakfast is served in a different room that affords you the view of peacocks showing off their beautiful tail feathers and colorful humming birds at the feeders in the trees. The spa area is really nice and we can recommend the Couples Massage. The room was spacious, the bed heavenly, and the footed bathtub was a nice touch. It would be an excellent location for a honeymoon or anniversary.
