We had initially booked with Dive Timor, not really knowing of any other options from home; however, their boat had broken down (sounds like this happens often) – and we very luckily discovered Aquatica! Not only were they much more warm and welcoming to our group of 4, but we had incredible dive experience! We also moved accommodations to their adjoining, beautiful apartments – which were above and beyond expectations inside. The location is right on the beach, but a little out of the main core. Desmond and Jennifer are wonderful people – they not only want you to feel safe and welcomed, but to have a great time. We dived around Atauro Island, even completing some exploration dives, discovering beautiful coral walls and extremely healthy reef. In addition to dolphins, we were even lucky enough to have whales surface right beside our boat! There are some interesting and strong (variable) currents here. This tech was a big draw for us, but maybe to be considered for others if looking to dive around Atauro.
After a day of diving, they also happily dropped us off at Barry’s Place on Atauro (highly recommended) - and picked us up for more diving on another day, returning us to Dili afterwards.
A nice touch, was the delicious and large hot lunch provided on the boat - even accommodating us vegetarians! They took excellent care of our gear on and off the boat as well, and our 2 friends who were renting, were very impressed with the top-notch gear provided.
Desmond and Jennifer are super accommodating, genuinely lovely people, who we became friends with very quickly! It was a very long way to travel for our group, and Aquatica made it absolutely memorable. Hope to return one day! Thanks Jen and Des!!!!

I spent a couple of months in Dili for work and decided to get my dive certification while I was there. My boss recommended I go to Desmond and Jennifer at Aquatica. Desmond was a great instructor and very accommodating. He let me learn at my own pace and I never felt uncomfortable. He worked around my schedule (even diving with my on Christmas day) and the whole certification process was quick and painless. I went on a couple more dives with them at K41 and Secret Garden during my stay and had a great time. Should I ever return to Dili, I'll definitely make my way back to Aquatica.

My first dive in East Timor was with Aquatica and I must say I was shocked by their unprofessional operations.

They never ask me about my number of dives, nor my level of certification (Divemaster). I was not asked to sign any forms or even show my card. At the dive site, (a muck, shore dive) no safety briefing was given, we were just asked to buddy check each other (not knowing my level, how could they even know I knew what that was)

We were separated in to two groups, I had a problem equalizing at one point during the dive and swam a little higher up to sort it out, the guide just swam away, not paying attention to me and I really had to chase him to keep up with the group and not lose them.
After I while he noticed that one of the people in our group was missing, so the guide left us to swim and look for him, after a while he came back and just signalled with his arms that 'I don't know'

When we surfaced, I complained about the dive and saying that it was really unprofessional so I didn't have to pay for the dive which was fair enough. Also the other guide, a girl, it was mentioned by someone in her group was more interested in taking pictures than guiding the dive.

I was supposed to go on a second dive with them that day but opted out.

I must say that they were really nice people, sweet and charming but that really doesn't help when safety is neglected.
