After an hour and a half here, I felt I had a good understanding of East Timor's struggle for independence, but I felt like I'd just spent three hours in a library. There are few artefacts, mostly displays are pictorial and the stories are long, but they are interesting.

This is one of two museums in Dili, and both concentrate on the occupation. I would love to visit a museum that told the story of Timor prior to colonisation.

Mainly consists of a large-scale story board with historical photos and texts, telling the Timorese national story from pre-colonial times to the present. Many would find it a bit dry, but I learned a lot from it.

This museum is located near the university. It costs $1 to enter. There is a very well done display of information about the history of Timor Leste and timelines explaining how things developed regarding Portuguese withdrawal and Indonesian invasion happened. It covers up to around 2002 or so. The Chega! exhibition at CAVR in the old Portuguese Gaol then follows more recent events
