“Not for the more discerning traveller”

We stayed at the Grand for 3 nights as part of an organised tour (by Inghams) of Slovenia and Croatia and so had no choice of hotel or room category. The hotel is very nice and spread over 4 former Austro- Hungarian villas which are indeed very nice and very grand. There are some nice outdoor spaces to enjoy drinks in the good weather. We particularly liked the terrace at the Grand Café where they serve fantastic cakes, coffees etc.
Our standard room was nice and had a spacious balcony with side views of the sea. The ensuite shower room although very small was nice and looked newly refurbished.
The restaurant was huge with both breakfast and dinner served buffet style. There was a wide choice of food at breakfast but we felt that the quality of the food was disappointing.
We have never taken buffet style dinner before and we won’t be opting for the option again – dinner for us should be good food served to the table and well presented. This was more of a canteen experience and on the final night of our stay nothing more than a ‘bun fight’- we made 2 attempts to get a table in the restaurant. On our 2nd attempt we joined a couple from our party but did have to set the crockery ourselves. There were tables piled with dirty pots as guests attempted to clear tables themselves. The waiters were running round like headless chickens doing their best to cope. I complained to the Manager (I use the title loosely) who told me that he had 650 guests to 265 seats! He simply didn’t care but we did and for this reason alone we would not recommend this hotel.

There is no way this is a four star hotel. Our room was dingy, had one useless tiny window (approx 18 inches by 12) at hip height and no curtain. Our room faced the street so the location of the window prevented any privacy.
Breakfast was ok. There appeared to be a large selection however on closer inspection the food was all much the same; lots and lots of German cakes.
My main gripe was the staff. With one exception, they were brusque, discourteous and unhelpful. One woman on the reception desk of the Camillia building told us to go away when we approached the desk. The restaurant staff spoke no English and we had a farcical 'moment' that extended to ten minutes when enquiring about the cost of the buffet dinner. We didn't eat there.
This place has ATTITUDE and I wouldn't stay there again.

This is another hotel for which I must question a 4-star rating. The room that I was given was large, with a king-size bed and very good bath. However, the amenities ended there. The carpeting was worn and tired looking as were the window treatments. The room was very sparsely furnished and what furniture was there was uncomfortably arranged for reading, writing at the desk or viewing the TV. In addition, the desk chair and small settee had stained cushions. (I felt obliged to place a towel over the chair cushion before sitting and have provided a photo). The food (breakfast) was generally quite good as was the evening buffet. However, the dining room was a two-elevator excursion via poorly marked doors and corridors or, as an alternate, a 65-step (I counted them) descent and climb back to street level and the entrance to my building. The staff was curtly helpful when asked, but hardly forthcoming with assistance. Overall, the hotel is adequate and, from the outside, very appealing. The location is excellent, with all of the town easily accessible. There are probably better choices but this hotel works if you can overlook some deficiencies in the details. I'd have to call this one a 3-star hotel with a 4-star facade.

We spent two nights in this lovely hotel in this lovely town. Our room had a balcony that overlooked the Adriatic and our views from sunrise to sunset were spectacular. The room had two twin beds pushed together to make a large king-size sleeping space. Not perfect but adequately comfortable. There was a nice sofa, desk and chair and armoire in the room as well. The decor was belle epoque elegant.
We had one dinner buffet and two breakfasts at this hotel and the food was superb. The dinner had everything one could ask for, from pastas to risotto to fish to rabbit stew etc. The breakfast buffet was unbelievable. One morning there were freshly made omelets and crepes, another morning had freshly made french toast. There were sweet and savory dishes, a huge variety of breads and rolls, hot and cold cereals, eggs, cheese, coffee, juices etc. No one went away hungry from this breakfast!
While I didn't use the spa or pool, others who did said it was pleasant and more than adequate.
The hotel's location just a stone's throw away from the Lungomare promenade was wonderful. It was so nice to just step outside our door, walk two minutes and be on the seafront. It was also very close to some very decent restaurants.
This hotel is a keeper.

We spent 4 nights here as part of a group tour. We were in the Camellia building. Our room was very spacious, with traditional moldings and furniture. The bed was very comfortable and the bath appeared to have been recently updated. The a/c was not as efficient as U.S. standards, but Croatia is very tuned into energy savings. The breakfast buffet was more than adequate. We didn't try the dinner buffet but some in our group did and they reported it was not good. As noted in some other reviews, there is music at night in the adjacent building and it can be quite noisy. We found that with our window closed, we really could not hear it.

Another reviewer complained about the hills and stairs. Those are part of the charm of Opatija. You can't find anywhere in this city without hills and stairs. Be sure to check out the beautiful sea wall walking path that stretches for over 7 miles and you will see beautiful coves, cafes and plenty of local interest.

For dining we highly recommend the Yacht Club, just below the hotel and Vongola, slightly to the north along the sea wall.

  • Liked — Great location
  • Disliked — Loud music bothered some of the people in our group

As a pensioner I found the room clean and comfortable with a wonderful view over the small harbour to the Islands and the town of Reijeka. The buffet meals had a large choice but most of the meat courses fequently looked and tasted the same. The staff were welcoming and the service excellent. However this hotel, above all things, is a business hotel. The large business complex across the road spills over into the hotel all of the time and it is rare that you can find a quiet corner anywhere for a drink etc. Meetings go on round tables in the lounge all of the time. There is more space at weekends but then weddings etc take over and loud functions go on until 4 am in the morning. There is a major noise problem from a bar adjacent to the hotel. The vibration of the music is incredible and in the rooms nearest to the sea the sound is inescapable. Management are happy to allow this to continue due to the transient nature of the clients, being mainly businessmen, who come once and rarely come again. If you are happy to endure this environment then the hotel is certainly value for money. With the many excellent hotels in Opatija I would think that this hotel is one for the tourist to miss.

  • Liked — Wonderful views and friendly staff
  • Disliked — Business takeover of hotel space all the time and nightime excessive noise.
