Grand Hotel d'Abidjan
Ranked #20 of 32 Hotels in Abidjan

What the Grand lacks in refinement, toilet seats and cleanliness, is more than compensated for by the friendliness of the staff and the general charm of the place. The restaurant is excellent, serving a simple but varied menu of European classics alongside local dishes. The world famous 'Menu Prestige' gives you the option of a starter, main course AND desert for a very reasonable CFA 10,000 (NB - sometimes dessert is just a banana, be warned). A wily colleague of mine discovered that you can in fact simply order the main course, omitting the starter and dessert, for CFA 7,000 - a smart move when 'just a banana' is on the menu for dessert (see above).
Rooms are spacious and overlook the lagoon and its congested bridges. Sheets are changed daily and there is (some) hot water for a shower.
I will certainly be returning to the Grand next time I am in Abidjan - it's a great place to stay if you can't afford the Novotel.

Probably your best choice for a budget hotel in the business district/ Plateau area of Abidjan. The rooms are clean and most of them have a river view with balcony. The bathrooms are lacking, but that is expected in a budget hotel. However, I had enough hot water to shower. The bed is not that comfortable, but again, what do you expect in a budget hotel.

The best features are the location and the restaurant inside the hotel. Breakfast is adequate and dinner was good. Staff are very helpful and friendly. An acceptable choice for the budget traveler.

Room Tip: Rooms with river views are nicer, but loud.

The staff are very friendly and helpful and the location is central but the hotel is truly terrible. The rooms are unbelievably dirty, the linens are stained, the furniture is falling apart, the aircon unit is covered with grime, bare lightbuls and bare wires sticki out of the walls ... broken toilet, flimsy lock on the door, clogged shower drain ... you name it, they've got it. But for about EUR 50 per night, you probably won't do much better in Abidjan. I stayed here because all the business hotels in central Abidjan were full ... but they charge EUR 100+ per night. This hotel is owned by a Lebanese-French owner who has apparently not invested a penny into the property since it first opened (it was the first hotel in Abidjan) in the late 50's. During one of the tropical downpours, my room flooded with about an inch of water on the floor, soaking my luggage. The hotel needs massive investment and a top-to-bottom renovation, and then it might be a reasonable place to stay ... after a thorough cleaning. But not now.

Room Tip: Don't keep anything on the floor if you want it to stay dry when it rains.

Dear MAJMK,

Thank you very much for taking the time to contribute your review about the Grand Hotel d'Abidjan and for your honesty. We are genuinely sorry to discover that your experience has been unpleasant during your stay at the hotel, and we are taking your feedback into account to remedy to this situation.

As an owner/manager in this establishment, I have to agree that it is in need of a major capital injection and a renovation. Unfortunately the political crisis the country has suffered over the last few years has left us in a difficult situation and we were not able to attend to this any earlier. We have however, as you kindly point out, been blessed by a friendly and very capable staff which have managed to make our customers' experience as nice as possible, in spite of the old age of the hotel.

That said, I am now glad to inform you that we have taken in your and other customers' feedback and have decided to undertake a total renovation of the hotel. The entire management of the hotel has been working relentlessly over the last few months in anticipation of a renovation project that will involve the refurbishment of all bathrooms and rooms, the renovation of the electro-mechanical systems of the building as well as the restructuring of some common areas.

We are in deed very excited to be enabling the rebirth of the Grand Hotel d'Abidjan, which - as you rightly point out - is among the very first hotels in Abidjan at the time of the independence and dates back to 1956. The works are scheduled to commence at the end of summer 2013, with a completion target date around the second quarter of 2014.

We hope to be able to welcome you back in our establishment after its renovation and hope that your memories of your previous experience will be washed away by an entirely new and most enjoyable one.

Kind Regards,

Grand Hotel d'Abidjan
