Sofitel Abidjan Hotel Ivoire
Ranked #1 of 32 Hotels in Abidjan
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 7, 2013

After numerous stays in Abidjan I wanted to try the hotel Ivoire as it was "promoted" to Sofitel.
What a deception. I don't know what they refurbished? the lobby and its sofas are the same than on the 2004 events pictures (check on you tube, it's just amazing...)
There were some works in progress in the hotel, so we had only 2 from the 4 elevators available, long waiting time with full of unhappy guest was the result.
It was the beginning of the events in Mali, so there were a lot of "excellencies" in the hotel, strange enough, from guest, you become an intruder: "degagez, le tapis rouge n'est pas pour vous" or (go away, the red carpet is not for you).
The restaurants were full of un-educated military people, one even took our bread basket from our table to give it to his superior !! There was at that time a security gate installed and the first day uit was peeping all day. But this is (I suppose) all related to the Mali operation?
Regarding the rooms, a lot to say as well.
The AC in the room is very, very noisy and was clearly not a deal in the refurbishment deal, doesn't work properly but after been checked by the staff declared as normal AC noise ????
Even in the lobby, the AC's are blowing on the windows, so the windows are full of condensation. The ath and showers are too small, you will spit water everywhere, the beds are ok.
The swimming pool is just disgusting, papers are floating around, the pool-walls are green from algaes and no one is reacting on this. If you ever want to go to the pool, you'll wait 15 minutes for your towel as the guys are, not cleaning, but chatting around.
I had some insect visitors (roach type) in my rooms at 14th floor (twice mentionned at reception desk), strange but no visible result was achieved after my 6 days stay.
I have nothing to complain about the staff (not from french origin but from north african french speaking countries), they are friendly and helpfull
Wifi is not free
Take care when you pay and check your bill, they tried to charge me 30.000CFA (50€) for usage of the business center (same for my colleague when he checked out 2 hours after me).
I'm a gold card member of accor hotel, and I can understand all the changes in the hotel organisation, however i can't accept the hotel is charging such a high price for such a low level accomodation and prestation. In March 2013 i'll go back to the Pullman Hotel, just at the opposite side of the bay, the rate is way better than is this fake hotel ivoire sofitel.
If I'm posting this comment with 2 month delay, it's because it was impossible to pay with credit card, we tried (8) several times with my (4) credit cards. Result is that my bank datas have been communicated to more 200 mail adresses and that i had to change bank numbers and cards)
Now that all the potential problems are solved i may post this review

Room Tip: ask for a non smoker room (heard some rooms are really stinky)

Just returned from a 5 day stay at the Sofitel Hotel Ivoire in Abidjan and it was a complete pleasure. The staff were superb, nothing was too much trouble and they were charming in all their interactions. The hotel recently refurbished is excellent for business travelers. The rooms are spacious, modern and well-equipped with good wireless access. The 23rd floor restaurant is a great haven but do not miss out on the range of fantastic restaurants in the city.

The hotel has a wonderful pool and a spa is promised, by far the best hotel for the business traveller in Abidjan and I would expect also for holidays. My only complaint is the scrambled eggs were like soup so need longer cooking but all else was a pleasure.

Utterly aweful from check in to leaving. Room was average. No hot water when I asked I was told it happens. Full stop reminded me of old eastern block hotels of the past. The staff were from another era and despite the recent facelift it's a long way off the prices charged.

Very nice hotel. The staff were pleasant, even though service was sometimes spotty. My suite was modern with a comfortable king bed with crisp white sheets, which I appreciated in humid Abidjan. Once renovation is completed, I expect Hotel Ivoire will become an even more attractive place to stay.

Clearly the best hotel in town (Pullman is a shabby second), this beautifully decorated and designed property continues to be refurbished and upgraded (it joined the Sofitel Group on 1 January). One could easily see Architectural Digest featuring the stylish lobby, exterior and poolside area overlooking the great lagoon of Abidjan in a future edition. The rooms are surprisingly smartly/modernly decorated - all with tremendous views from the high vantage point of the property.

A nice plus - upon arrival I was offered a chilled liquid chocolate drink with subtle pineapple bits. A novelty, perhaps, but how appropriate that this home of cocoa (Cote d'Ivoire) finds such a creative outlet (and trust me, there aren't many in such encounters with chocolate in such a warm climate). Macaroons and fresh tangerines in the room were a nice touch, too.

My only negatives relate to staff training - I was offered to sit away from the check-in desk as staff from the bar were busy occupying the space sorting out people's bills. Why not do that out of sight/out of client's way? Also, at 2230 hrs, someone tried to open my door - I scrambled from bed to investigate and it was a staff member w/trolley - apparently doing turn down service; at 2230 hrs? Dear hotel - train your staff to do such jobs at more appropriate times - and also have them knock first vs attempting to barge in (thankfully I had the door bolted).

Would I stay again? Given the choices in Abidjan yes.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the water - much better view that out the back

The Hotel Ivoire is a nice place to stay in Abidjan. Rooms are nice and modern. Renovation work is ongoing and this will probably even enhance.

Staff very polite and helpful.

Food for breakfast and restaurants is good.

One bad thing though: getting to the city centre can take some time.
