I needed to be in AC for a boat show and wanted to stay at the beach (there a bunch of cheaper motels on the Black Horse Pike but they are a drive to the beach).I reviewed all of the Trip advisers cheaper selections and tried the EconoLodge. AC is loaded with shabby hotels along Pacific Ave and some of the reviews were really bad. This place was a nice compromise over not spending $300 for a weekend night in a casino hotel. It was 150 ft from the entrance to the Tropicana with all of its great restaurants and gambling and less than a block to the Boardwalk.Room 103 was spotless and faced a side street.Desk staff could not be nicer. Its important to note that this place is 2 small hotels on both sides of Pacific Ave and the rooms are very close to the street (noise could be an issue in the summer).I stayed at the Chelsea next door last year for a lot more $$$ and if you need a motel with a fancier lobby try the Chelsea but the rooms were similar.,Don't expect anything but a parking lot and a spotless room for a great price and this place will do the trick.

Econolodge is usually way down my list of choices as their quality is inconsistent. However, I had a meeting in the Tropicana and, given the negative reviews for the Tropicana, I figured I probably wouldn’t likely be much worse off in the Econolodge at one-half the price plus the parking was free, the internet access was free, and the continental breakfast was free, all of which are extra costs at the Tropicana. The reviews for Econolodge were not that good either so my expectations were not high but it was just for one night so I figured I could make it work.

Fortunately it turned out better than I expected. There was no evidence of prostitution activity and other nonsense that other reviewers noted. However, it was the middle of the week and the whole area was dead, dead, dead (which was just fine with me). Or, perhaps I just didn’t stay up late enough to see what was going on. My overall take on the place is that the current management is doing about the best that can be done given the property with which they are working.

The Econolodge is very conveniently located right next to the Tropicana. It is an older two-story building built in the traditional style of an older motel and a bit beat up. The gentleman at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and neat. The bathroom had been recently redone with new tile, fixtures, etc. by someone with as poor color coordination ability as me (grey and yellow???? must have been on sale). The bed and mattress were quite good. The room was good sized for a single king bed. The wireless internet was fast. My room did not have an alarm clock but the front desk provided a wake up call that came right on time. The building sits right on the street so you get a lot of street noise, traffic and people. I expect at busy times it could be pretty bad. Even though things were dead, it was still annoying during the night. The continental breakfast is limited but sufficient to get you going.

When I first entered the room there was a very strong smell of “deodorizer.” It immediately makes you wonder what bad odor was being covered up. The bathroom had a window that could actually be opened, which I liked. The outside weather was pleasant with a nice breeze blowing so I worked in my room for an hour or so with the door and window open for cross-ventilation, which aired things out a little. With the so-called air freshener diminished somewhat, a funky old hotel odor was very noticeable, which I suspected would be the case.

If you are not particularly bothered by odor and noise, then this motel may be an economical, convenient choice. If either of them bothers you, then you may want to look elsewhere. However, by the looks of the reviews, there is not much in the way of economical, quality hotels on or near the boardwalk.

By the way, a couple of colleagues that stayed at the Tropicana confirmed that I made a good decision.

Stayed with wife and daughter on August 12, 2010, at the Best Western Envoy, for one night for leisure, trip not related to Atlantic City casinos, just passing through on this occasion. Stayed in this motel for one night six years ago before a one week stay at Bally's.

Motel abit dated but still very clean and well maintained, elevator works fine, carpets abit dated but clean, maid service good, desk service good, every thing good but not stellar, parking front or back fine. No frills, decent room, good night's sleep. Best rates midweek. One plus: this Best Western gave a free continental breakfast which was not advertised. Second floor breakfast area consists of orange and apple juice, bagels, muffins, cereals, waffles and coffee. It was okay. Ice machines and vending machines work.. Free newspaper.

Travelers take note: The Press (newspaper of Atlantic City) noted police officer numbers are down (recent retirees have not been replaced as well as cutbacks) and crime is up in Atlantic City so watch your back even on the boardwalk. There's a 7-11 next to the motel, and Perry's Coffee Shop 9-5PM a block away or so (very good), as well as delivery menus in the room. Rooms have microwave, refrigerator and coffeemaker, one or two beds, request nonsmoking, Air conditioner / heater under the bedroom window has adjustable settings.

Overall this is a very decent place, good buy for the money midweek. Desk staff, and maid service are EXCELLENT. Really went out of their way to be nice and helpful and make sure our stay went well. That stands for something. Room was adequate, I'd say 85 on a scale of 100, all right, looks about 1995-2000 but does the job. No noise, good night's sleep. Boardwalk,a couple of other restaurants within a block or two. Casinos best accessible by walking to the Boardwalk first behind the hotel and walking back and forth there.

As long as you don't have expectations of a casino hotel you'll be fine. It's good for a quick fix when you don't plan on spending a lot of time in the room. It's also good if you're on a budget and would like more money for spending. It's a motel not a hotel. I would definitely stay there again on short notice.

Had a recent business meeting in AC and the location of the Econo Lodge was convenient. The place is located on a busy intersection - your room will either face Pacific Avenue, a main through street, or the back end of the Tropicana bus garage, so if you're a light sleeper like I am, there are probably better choices. The room was clean and the bed comfortable, but it's a very lowbrow experience.
