Honestly, I was very worried about how our timeshare exchange at the Flagship would go, based on the reviews on this site (which I have always found very reliable). Never having been to AC, my expectations were low, but our trip was to scout colleges for our daughter, so I knew we would not be spending much time at the resort. Overall, we were pleasantly surprised and this was a great home base for our family of four.
We arrived in the evening and parked on the street prior to check-in. Despite the $7 per night parking fee in the structure, we felt more comfortable parking there. We completed the property's survey and one for Interval International and received two nights of parking free. Check-in was fast and easy and we waved off the anticipated timeshare presentation solicitation with very little hassle.
Our view from the 12th floor was fantastic – out over the ocean and back toward the hotel/Boardwalk. The huge balcony could be accessed from the living room or the bedroom. The area was obviously in the process of gentrification prior to the economic downturn and last year's hurricane, so the surrounding area is a mixed bag. There is an empty lot next to the building and there must have been a boardwalk just across the street at one time. AC, in general, seemed to be less safe than I would have liked.
While the furnishings are very dated at the Flagship, our one-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath unit was spacious and clean. Two big closets held all of our belongings, though the door configuration in the bedroom was kind of awkward and right in front of the closet. It was no big deal to wash the dishes as we used them – we do that at home – and there was a nice big sponge, paper towels and dish detergent. The sofa mattress was pretty bad and the main living area should have had at least one more light. TV reception was fine and they had plenty of channels, including HBO.
Cleaning staff should check garbage more than once per week and they really should check the common hallways more frequently – there were smashed crackers on the 12th floor carpet for two days.
Our son only used the pool area once, but it was adequate and nicely heated. Towels are provided. There are activities for the kids (which we did not take advantage of) and the game room seemed fine. The fitness room was nice: it had enough equipment, chilled water, several TVs and a great view of the ocean. There is a convenient shuttle service to the shopping area and Boardwalk/casinos. This is very nice, since there is metered parking and you do have to pay at the casino parking structures.
Now, a word about those elevators. The system makes sense in theory, but certainly fails in practice. Schindler (the lift company) has even produced a video that runs on a screen at the ground level talking up the benefits of the system. You punch in your floor and the system tells you which elevator to use. I am not sure if it is because the staff uses the guest elevators (we saw quite a lot of that) or if the system is just flawed, but it does take a while to board. This is an issue that needs to be addressed. The weekdays were not as bad as the weekend when the elevators tended to be more crowded. Fortunately, we were never in a major hurry when leaving the building.
All things considered, the Flagship was perfectly fine and great for our particular type of vacation.
